Did This New Anti-Smoking Ad Go Too Far?

Submitted by: fancylad 8 years ago in

Questions are being raised about whether the ad of this mom purposely bailing on her kid to get him to cry went too far.

To everyone saying it`s their right to smoke..

my parents smoke in my garage. My pregnant sister can`t even walk out there, I have to hold my breathe if I want to, and that`s where one of our refrigerators is, so it isn`t like it`s a low traffic area. God Forbid I have a friend with Asthma over and they walk out there.

Not to mention that I have problems breathing some times, and I worry that it may be part of a bigger problem caused by my parents smoking.

So yeah. It`s not about you. It`s about the other people you hurt with your second hand smoke. Until you can find a secluded area where nobody else can ever be affected, you shouldn`t be smoking.

pretty much all smokers die of smoking when their kids are well into their late 20s-30s. and if you can`t be in an airport without your mother by then, well..

Yeah Ausiguy I know - I tried patches but I have a bad reaction to them because of the glue they use to stick makes my whole arm feel like its on fire. I am actually down to 5 cigarettes a day. I think it`s gonna happen this time because cigarettes here are now $6 a pack and I cant really afford them.

I agree with pomunium.
We smokers are being ridiculed, discriminated and insulted, often by non-smoking bigots who have no idea what it`s like to be addicted.
Of course it`s still a choice, but if you`re condemning me for it, you sure aren`t helping.

drat you, I hate that kid.

Of course it was justified. Smokers need to know how their smoking can affect their children and family. Because decades of it being crammed and screamed into their ears through dumbass commercials and annoying anti-smoking people have not been effective enough. Crying children will FINALLY get this message across.
People know that they can die. They smoke anyway. If you want to get a loved one to quit, tell them so, but if they keep on smoking, that`s their choice. Let them be.

cigarettes are the hardest drug to quit. My mother died of lung cancer april 20, 2007, she was 61 years old. She died right in front of my father, my brother and myself and there was nothing we could do. I tried to give her CPR but she just laid there dead and vomited all over herself. I have been trying to stop smoking ever since and so far it is impossible. So if you have never smoked or have already found the will power to stop. please never smoke cigarrettes.

ANYTHING can spark a toddler to cry, intentional or not, and even then, it`s not like this kid was abused on set or anything, he just started to cry near the end of the scene from what i`ve heard. even if it was intentional, the kid will get over it, he got scared ONCE, he`ll get over it.

Taxes on tobacco are not meant to get people to stop smoking no mater what excuse a government uses. It`s because its a unsociable vice that legislatures can easily pass without much grumbling from there constituents. Simple put, they do it because they can get away with it. That said, if you smoke cigarettes your just a cog in the machine.

I don`t think it is going to far. At any second you could lose a parent. Smoking only makes that second come closer. I lost my dad, partly, to smoking. He would probably still be here today if he didn`t smoke. If this is what it takes to make people realize what it could do then it needs to be done.

You can get cancer from almost anything, and you`re going to die anyways so I say quit bitching about smoking and enjoy life to the fullest. And to all of you who bitch about second hand smoke, how often does a smoker seriously come up to you and just blow smoke right at you...you`re so dratin whiney. I quit smoking though, not because it`s bad, but because Obama was an non-nice individual and rose the taxes so its over $5 a pack...But I admit the tax is 100% more effective in getting people to quit smoking than any commercial ever will be.

Manipulation through fear and emotion.

This is how the powers that be are taking over and creating a one world government.

I`ve never smoked a cigarette in my life, But I don`t support the current campaigns against smokers. Once they have fully vilified smoking, They will go after the rest of our freedoms.

I don`t think that kid was crying for real. His face looked like it could almost pass off for real crying but not really there yet. Looking at the camera near the end never really help with the crying also. Though I doubt that alot of us could do the same thing at that age...at least not without a crapload of takes.

Eh, little kids cry about everything. It`s just how they express distress. It`s not like adults don`t feel the same levels of distress, at times. It`s just that we`ve learned to suppress those urges.
Plus, I`m willing to bit that the kid was an actor.

There was an interview with the mother on 105.1 Triple M in melbourne, both her self and her son are trained actors.

The child has also had previous work in other advertising commercial not too long before this one.

He has played many parts in commercials and acting that require him to cry, straight after the filming he was back to normal.

the man who supports this commercial did not witness them make it, therefor did not know if the producers did anything bad to the kid
all he could say that he can stand to have one kid cry to save manys lives

That is the most horrifying thing I have heard in a long time. You obviously have no empathy and no human decency. You are so sheltered as to think that those people deserve to die because they were born into a bad situation, that having them dead would solve all of our problems.
Please have a little consideration, instead of giving up we should be educating and getting the next generation of children a good foundation to grow up with. They are not lost causes and they don`t deserve your hatred. Imagine if you were born into a situation like that. You would want understanding and a better future, not a death sentence.

How is that intense or going too far?? It`s not like they showed something explict or gory. They are simply making a point. I`m sure they made the kid cry, and the situation was completely controlled. You know why cigarettes should not be banned? Two words: population control. Same with guns. In fact, I believe they should hand guns and cigarettes out in ghettos and black neighborhoods. Our crime rate, nationally, would decline rapidly. You hate to admit it, but you know it`s true. Look up some information about black crime.http://www.solargeneral.com/mirror...

"You won`t die if you smoke, you`ll only drat your health up a bit and in the long run ruin your lungs, and in a worst case scenario it`ll give you lung cancer."

Tell that to my uncle and cousins. My aunt died of emphysema last week. She was on an oxygen tank for the past 10 years and finally expired. Now my cousins don`t have a mom anymore.

As for this commercial, it`s called acting. Little kids act in TV shows and movies all the time and part of that acting is pretending to cry when the situation calls for it. The kid obviously could see the huge camera in front of him so he knew that he was being supervised.

Medigo, I made an account just for you.
Get your poo straight. Know what you`re talking about before you leave bullpoo like your comment on here. My dad is DYING from aggressive bladder cancer specifically caused from smoking. If he cannot get his whole bladder removed within the next couple of weeks, it will spread to more vital parts of his body that cannot be removed. Unfortunately, he has lost so much weight (he weighs 137 at 6`3". At his prime he weighed 210) BECAUSE of how much of a toll the cancer is taking on him that he cannot have the surgery. drat you. Smoking can kill.
On another note: to cut off nasty comments towards me, it was his own choice to keep smoking. I just will not stand for someone to act so oblivious to the problems that are affecting so many people. Go to school and learn a thing or two, Medigo.

Honestly, if you think about the concept of the commercial it wasn`t the mother leaving her kid and intentionally getting him to cry, it was to prove the point that a child gets scared and anxious when they don`t know where their parents are, and if they continue to smoke, sooner or later their health will deteriorate and they could die and that would leave their child helpless and scared. It was strong ad I thought, and I that it possibly reached a lot of people.

I think advertisements like this can work. I quit smoking when my mom rammed it into my head that I had a son who depended on me and needed me, and how much what I was doing could affect him. I think smoking commericals are all stupid and a waste of government money. Us smokers, we all know the risks and dangers of smoking and seeing them on a commerical isn`t going to make us feel any differently about smoking. Most smokers find it extremely aggrivating and annoying when people tell us how bad it is and whatnot. It`s just annoying it doesn`t make us want to quit. The government should just stop wasting money.

I feel sorry for the little kid, but I don`t think it went too far. It`s a powerful advert making a valid point.

I don`t see how this "went too far". It`s a perfectly valid point, and if this is about a kid crying, there are millions of kids crying in TV already, I don`t really see what makes this one so different.

I don`t think it`s going too far. I think it presents a valid point; most often, anti smoking ads focus on the health risks and detriments to your body (all wonderful points to advertise). However, I think focusing on the way smoking effects others, especially your children, is a smart move.
