I think Discomonkey it is more to do with the interplay of close harmonics fighting against the distortion. If you played it clean you would get 2 very closely pitched notes. But distortion / overdrive gives all kinds of intermodulation effects when you shove in 2 out of tune (enharmonic) pitches.

When he says 10 and 13, it seems to be 10 on one string and 13 on the next two ones, but what strings is he playing?

I can pull something similar off by plucking the G and B strings up near the 12th fret and then bending the G up, it sounds like tuning a radio sometimes.

This and that might have something to do with the single coil coil pick ups on a Strat, so it might be harder to do on humbuckers.

Yeah there`s more than one type of metal, and dont tell people their taste in music sucks and then tell them to listen to YOUR favourite band and then brag about seeing them live, owning all their albums or that you have their bassist`s autograph, etc etc,

/Rant

So...yeah, Metallica are metal.

It would sound even better if he picked the strings first and then brought up the volume. Also, he needs to can the reverb.
