Why do we elect idiots? Because the voters are usually uneducated idiots...

Wait, was he really an idiot? It seemed like he was just being unnecessarily technical with his terminology and the interviewer was just trying to take advantage of that, but they both seemed to be in agreement, more or less. He was just trying to explain that we do not have our taxes automatically paid by us by taking the money from our bank account or something, rather, we have to pay it ourselves more or less. I think the point is, the government won`t just take your money, even if they send you to jail I don`t think the government gets your money unless you pay it. Therefore, I suppose it is voluntary, as long as you`re willing to go to jail for not paying, where in other countries you might not even have that, still not good, option. Er, right?

What he means is that in European countries, among others, your employer takes taxes out for you, and gives it to the government. That is forceful. Even if you wanted to, you couldn`t decide to not give it to the government. In America, you can decide if you want to pay taxes or not. But if you don`t there are penalties.

Aero--You are probably correct that these two are technically in agreement-- they`re playing a game with vocabulary and "phraseology"--semantics. However the statement in your post about the government not taking your money is incorrect--they can and do levy your income if you owe taxes and have not entered into an agreement/payment plan with them. The IRS can take up to a certain amount off your paycheck every week. I owed $24k in back-taxes and was only making around $500 a week at the time-- they took around $375 out of my pay for a while so I got a loan to pay it off at a rate that I could handle... They don;t care if you starve to death or you lose your house-- they TAKE it... So it is NOT voluntary by any means....

It isn`t voluntary is there is a punishment for not doing it. Also by the American Constitution any Income tax is illegal (except for a state level income tax), the federal government has no right to your money. I would have no problem if it were a local income tax (You know to pay for schools, road work, and the general well being of your local area). I`ve done a lot reading and research on the subject. I personally think a local income tax wouldn`t be that bad, and you could move some where else if you don`t wanna pay as much.

Don`t listen to any idiot who tells you either that the Federal Income Tax is a)voluntary or b) unconstitutional. You will go to jail if you refuse to pay income tax. The 16th Amendment allows the income tax, and nobody gives a rat`s @ss whether Ohio did it right. Just ask Wesley Snipes.

It is a voluntary system because "you give your money to them" as opposed to "They take the money from you" it is as simple as that.

You are forced to pay your taxes as long as you live under a capitalism system. Taxation and money always goes hand in hand.

Thanks don11817 for correcting me instead of just calling me an idiot without explanation lol. I wasn`t really sure what I was talking about, just assuming. But I think I will still say this. The word "voluntary" that is used here might also be just to distinguish the difference between the government taking the money straight from you right away or not, even if they will when you don`t pay anyway. (Again, not sure, just throwing out some possibilities here...)

This doesn`t prove any stupidity. The interviewer is being ignorant. Our tax system is just like any other "law." They are all completely voluntary. You will, however, suffer the consequences of not paying if you decide not to. If I wish to murder my neighbor I am perfectly able to do that, but I will more than likely go to prison for it, possibly for the rest of my life. In that case, however, I will not be stopped prior to it happening. When you get a job you can refuse to withhold taxes, then when you file the next year you will owe. It`s all in how people perceive the words. Take abortion for example. There are theoretically two side "Pro-choice" and "Pro-Life." Using this mans thought process someone on the Pro-choice side would be anti-life, and vice versa. This is ridiculous and exactly what certain people want to be in our subconscious.

I apologize and step off of my soap box.

This guy is not stupid, he knows exactly what he`s doing. Law is not voluntary because if you do`nt follow it you are forced to do something you do`nt want to do, like going to jail or paying more. Taxes should be paid but you should have the choice as to what the money goes to. Whats bullpoo is that the breaks(loopholes) that people get are geared towards familys and pregnant 15 year olds that have a bunch of kids and go on welfare and thereby gaining even more money. How about breaks for single people who decide not to have kids as well.

You can volunteer to pay your taxes you just have to be a senator they do it all the time. The original colonist of the America refused to pay their taxes and Britain tried to force them they resisted Revolution. Too many Americans believe that this government is American when it is not. "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all. I like a little rebellion now and then. It is like a storm in the atmosphere."

That is highway robbery now everything in America is being socialized so my taxes will go up another percent or 2 your welcome lazy broke ass Americans with no drive. It`s sad how people really don`t know anything about it. Paying federal income tax is a voluntary process. It`s not voluntary like Spider suggests. It`s voluntary that you are expected to know the law, and how the law works. Once you begin paying federal income tax you are no longer exempt from paying it unless you can prove that you were not provided ample information from the IRS stating that you were exempt in the first place. This is a case of "ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law", since the IRS makes the law documents available to each and every person who is eligible to pay federal taxes. The law itself is written with strong words, such as "must", at the time Brown`s law dictionary defined "must" as "may".
The downside to this is that because so many people don`t understand the law and take it at face value, if you try to liberate yourself from paying taxes you typically end up with exacerbating court costs and occasiona

Harry Reid is an idiot, It is NOT voluntary that you pay taxes, Either your employer physically takes it out of your check or (if you own a business) you have to file a tax return declaring your income and write the government a check for what you owe (sometimes every 3 months).

There is nothing voluntary about the IRS collecting USA citizens taxes. The only small part, That is voluntary, Are the deductions you declare on your 1040

Reid tried to confuse this, With the "Voluntary" statement, Because he didn`t want to answer the main question. Typical politician tap dancing around, They`re like Jello you can`t nail them to the wall.

By the way, in this awful socialist nation of the UK, I`m paying 19% income tax...or rather, I`m paying 12% income tax and 7% national insurance, which pays for my state pension, unemployment benefit AND universal healthcare.

So Americans, can you pay your income tax, pay your pension, and pay for full-coverage health insurance for under 19% of your income?

He`s right that the US is one of the only countries that has mortgage interest deductibility. As a result, however, studies have shown that Americans purchase homes that are larger than people making the same equivalent amount in other countries. Proof that tax incentives work. Give someone a break on mortgage interest and they just take out a bigger mortgage.

So to everyone in the US who lives in a house and has a mortgage - Your socialist government is subsidizing your housing.

At a minimum it can be said that this guy is either unable to descibe his position or is being stubborn over terminology with the interviewer at the expense of the viwers understanding his position just to piss off the interviewer and the audience = dumbass di*khead.

Reid was semanticly correct. It`s not hes fault the interviewer doesn`t realize saying someone is "forced" to do something means there are no other choices. Reid is trying to explain those other choices but he keeps getting interuppted.

    English fail for the interviewer.

That being said, Reid is an idiot. Just not right here. There are plenty of reasons to make fun of this man. I find it interesting that this old video was dug up to shed a bad light on him. Just look at what he has to say about abortion, civil rights, immigration... from a democrat no less.

And by the way guys in the US. I noticed he said you get to file you tax return and claim deductions etc. "Unlike most countries". I`ve heard this sort of thing before.

You guys in the U.S. do know that the rest of the world, with the exception of a few nasty spots, have the same rights and privileges as you do? Some have even more then you do.

more like smartest senator, atleast in that video. hes clearly dodging the initial question. and hes doing it well, half way through no one even remembers the question. what hes saying is technically correct but logically incorrect, and thats why he said it. he knew it would cause the interviewer to question the logic behind that statement.

escape taxation from the king because it was "taxation without representation." come on, I suck at history and even I know that. it isnt fored any more than laws are "forced." we voted for the representatives and they enact the rules.

his phrasing is pretty selective...if enough people rioted and raised hell about how much they paid, then YES your not forced to pay taxes...but if i just say "no" then ill go 2 jail

but sinced we are FORCED to pay taxes...are we FORCED to live in a free country? the words he used bring up a different emotion than the one the senator felt should be conveyed...

its like you saying you dont think we should be in iraq...stupid people will then say "then you want america to LOSE in iraq"...

I reckon we should be able to Opt Out.
No more income tax, but no more anything else.
ie we could just leave society altogether and live on free island where everything you own, you made for yourself.
    I like that idea :)

If you want to be all technical about it sure, hes correct. But hes only stretching the truth. =/
Politics are crooked, and have always been.
Its human nature to be out for yourself, why should any other human but ourselves be in charge of us?

But no, America couldn`t deal with anarchy because fear of government keeps at least some, more major crimes from happening. Then someone would always eventually try to take power, and in history, anarchy`s never really worked anyways...

...Okay im getting waaay ahead of myself. =P

what he`s saying is not entirely retarded. the U.S. tax system is a bit, complicated. Taxes are actually often referred to as "voluntary" but this refers to the fact the we have to count up our taxes and file our tax returns and such by ourselves rather than have it calculated automatically when we`re payed (like a sales tax). This is all basically legal terminology that makes no sense to most people, and I`ll admit the word voluntary should be avoided. I am also disappointed that he didn`t phrase this fact better.

P.S. Bag3|, Lets DANCE!!! EVERYBODY DANCE!!!

Ohnjaynb, I agree. You are totally right, they are argueing two different points.. The volutary portion of the tax sytem in both the US and Canada, is that you can include various deductions, that would otherwise be overlooked by a direct taxtion. Our choice is what we save haha! Not whether or not we pay!

They`re basically arguing over a definition: the interviewer defines "voluntary" as having the ability to make a choice without consequence, whereas Harry Reid means that Americans have to "voluntarily" file taxes themselves instead of leaving it up to their employers (although some places do this...) So they`re both right in some ways.

Stupid interviewing and very incabable politician.
Although i do love the way American politicians invent words (Phraseology) to make them sound intellectual. Surely phraseology would mean "the study of phrases" not a phrase that was just used.

What the Senator is saying is that if someone came up to you with a gun and took your wallet out of your pocket, that would be involuntary. But, if someone came up to you with a gun and told you to hand over your wallet, that would be voluntary.
