DuHasstMich: Ah. I always thought the beheading came after the samurai screams because the pain became unbearable after a while.

Video isn`t 100% accurate. As it has been said.

But this is a beautiful, artistic, honorific way to die. Anyone who thinks seppuku was horrid, has forgotten the miracle of how this universe came to be and is engulfed in the globalization that has taken over the old ways, of how we came to be where we are now.

I am not saying that seppuku was a key point, but a belief, that dying with honor was better than dying wealthy, in my eyes, is a million times more soothing than anything Japan does nowadays.

*wishes this world had more class and weeps*

I heard somehwere (probably national geographic, or somesuch) that one possibility as to why samurai dissembowled themselves after defeat was to prove that their insides were not deteriorated and corrupt.

I have a book about samurai. The process for seppuku that it describes in there is: They follow the video up to the taking off the shirt. However, the white paper on the ritual knife should have been set aside for the retainer to clean the knife. And, the samurai didn`t stab himself and immediately be beheaded. He sliced horizontally, then dragged the knife up. THEN, if he didn`t show any signs of pain, his retainer beheaded him.

In other words, video is off.

Yeah, the idea is that he must do that without showing any pain or faltering. If he can do that then he tilts his neck down and then he is beheaded.

Circular motions, people, circular motions. Gotta make sure those entrails fall out properly.
A very honorable way to go.

Lacked a required gore factor. Also, I thought they`d make a horizontal slash across the stomach, pull out the internal organs and hold them as long as possible, THEN they were beheaded. This guy took the pussy way out. :\

s0rd3dvis1on: It`s not really like that anymore, that was back in feudal times I think. Now if you go it`s probably like New York.

Bigshorty - The decapitation is part of the ritual. The samurai would choose a trusted friend or colleague (even though it was considered dishonorable to take this role) who would be assigned to decapitate him once the cut(s; depending on the severity of punishment required, sometimes samurai would make multiple cuts in different directions) had been made. This samurai was usually a master swordsman whose role it was to end the doomed samurai`s pain quickly but with respect, generally by making such a precise cut that the head was still attached by a sliver of skin. It was considered bad luck if the head came all the way off, and so choosing this person was rather important.

Of course, all of this information is from me reading Wikipedia while being bored during English, so take it however you so choose.

The fact that humans can place anything above their moment to moment survival differs us from most other living things. There are exceptions, like bees stinging and dying for their hives, or ants in swarms, but they are exceptions that prove the rule.

Now, suicide for honor to many of us doesn`t seem "right" or "fair," but what if it was for something more worthwhile. Would you commit suicide to cure aids? What about to eliminate scarcity and poverty altogether? Would you kill yourself to ensure the future of the human race? To many the answer is no, but some may think it a nobler end.

Know what I`m sayin` dawg?

That was cool. To say those Samurai were dedicated to what they did would be a gross understatement...

I thought they were only decapitated if they grimaced, or made a nose while cutting into themselves.
