This might be disgusting, but it is the safest way to get rid of large wounds with dead skin and tissue.

This would be better than the alternative, as cmanatlan said. After all, maggots get rid of dead flesh, which would give a better chance for the living tissue to heal.

i dont know how to put this any other way that they eat dead flesh b/c that is what`s encoded in thier DNA flies lay their eggs in dead flesh not live flesh. theres are fly/ other insect species that do lay eggs in live flesh like bot flies etc but ya >.>

I don`t really think that anyone will laugh at this treatment in the future, sure it`s not the most advanced treatment, but its the best treatment to remove dead tissue without it compromising healthy tissue... Like In this lady`s case, if she hadn`t done that she would have had her entire foot amputated... I`d do bugs over losing a limb any day!

Huh. I mean, if it works, ad it`s safe, it seems to be a very effective method. The only thing that would freak me out is if they would try to eat my living flesh... *shudder*

    But since they apparently don`t....awesome!

OK not to sound like a big deal know it all, but they only feed off the dead flesh, leaving the healthy. they have been doing it for 100s if not 1000s of years. it probably cost the hospital nothing to do it, but they charge you probably 1000s of dollars. heck grow ya own maggots lol

coffeeDiiva: Because some people dont know whats an immature maggot and a mature maggot, if you spread mature maggots on that, the next day, if not sooner, the maggots will burrow their heads and cocoon to spread flies...

Wouldn`t this be just a little bit painful? I mean how do they decide what is dead and what`s not? wouldn`t they at least scrape the living skin? Well I dunno. I`ll have to go do some research.
I would not be able to sleep with those on me though *shivers*

This is fantastic! Leeches and maggots are finally making their comebacks in modern medicine!

InvaderTiger, great question. I`m glad you asked it. The reason is because the infected areas are soft since the bacteria breakdown the skin and muscle tissue. Maggots can`t penetrate healthy tissue since it`s so much stronger/tough. It`s not painful, the only sensations the patient will feel is a slight tickle from time to time. People who wear a cast suffer more from the discomfort of itching than those under maggot, moth or leech therapies.

    Nature`s little scrubbing grubs. :)

Watched the follow up vid. The wound is completely covered up with healthy skin and it appears almost back to normal (somewhat misshapen due to loss of tissue, but hell, it still looks like a heel) and she can walk around on it with no problems. Pretty crazy.
