Did Obama Offend With His Special Olympics Joke?

Submitted by: fancylad 8 years ago in Misc

Obama was on the Tonight Show with Leno last night and made a slight joke about the Special Olympics. Was it that bad?

I`m pretty sure 129 wouldn`t get him very far in the Special Olympics. That is a horrible score. Jay Leno was kind of treating him like an overly self-conscious person would treat someone who was "bowling-challenged"... "oh no, that`s REALLY good, REALLY good!"

i laugh so hard at how democrats now r like... geez the media is just being unfair to obama and saying its trash that they think this is offensive BUT when a republican does something minor like that its all "LOOK that persons unfit for anything how unamerican of them"... finally the shoe is on the other foot for at least 4 years and u can see how it feels

As a president it was definitely in very poor taste. I know he is just human but jokes like that should be kept quiet, especially as a public figure, and one that is being watched like a hawk to begin with.

On a less important note, didn`t Jay Leno retire in the summer?

Oh, and there`s all sorts of nasty, vile things that people say in private that I blow off. If Obama said some of those things, it would end in his impeachment. So, that`s no argument.

Probably the most insane thing I`ve read was, " What Obama truly did was a good thing. Saying that he "dissed" handicapped people is an insult, to Obama and to handicapped people."

Wow, just... wow. So now what he said is a GOOD thing. "No need to apologize Mr. President. You`ve brought attention to the cause by angering so many people. If you`d just call them all `inferior`, I think we could set a new record for charitable contributions."

Wow, I`m surprised I`m getting irritated by this, but some of the comments are ridiculous.

Morgan, you`re absolutely right. If it were Bush, this would be the last straw. I`m not saying Obama is a bad guy for this, but so many people are so up on him as the Second Coming that he can do no wrong.

Obama WAS taking a shot at disabled people, diminishing their contributions and capabilities (despite overcoming huge obstacles) by making that joke. Heck, he wouldn`t have made that heartfelt apology otherwise.

As far as saying he is just "human" or is just a guy, well, he is held up to a higher standard. That`s why we don`t just put any old schmuck in office. The same reason we criticize him for this is the same reason we put so much stock in what he has to say when he has good ideas. We LISTEN to the guy and hang on his every word, because it`s so important.

Really, though, it`s really not that big of a deal. Everyone`s just making a big deal out of it for something to do.

To everyone who says the comment was messed up: if you were out with your friends, and they made a joke like "man i suck, i should be in the special olympics" you`d laugh, wouldn`t you?
Exactly.

Obama`s becoming president didn`t automatically make him a super human. He is ONLY human.

I thought it was funny. If anything, he was making fun of himself if you look at the context it was in.
I`m really happy having a president with a sense of humour, who I am easily able to understand is human, who isn`t a puppet for anyone, who has a personality and real thoughts and feelings.
I like the fact that he went on Leno. To me that says he cares about the US as people, as well as the younger demographics (16-25) who usually watch late night talk shows. It shows us his human side, which makes me have far more respect for him than I would if he acted like a political android.
A lot of people in the states simply WANT something to make drama over and pretend to be so greatly offended about. And how much do you want to bet that the hugest deal about this was launched by the GOP?
It`s all a battle of opposing politics, in my opinion, and not morality.

Reading through the comments it seems like pretty much everyone outside of the USA doesn`t think it should be offensive. (Such as myself, mehh, Spartano3, DVLDRVR666)

I guess you look at it very differently when the guy in question is actually ruling your country.

I don`t think that should offend. The special olympics are for people with disabilities, and all he`s saying is that he has a disability when it comes to bowling, although it`s not quite as dramatic as missing limbs or anything.

I don`t think he means to say disabled people are bad at sports, just that they have a disadvantage, and so does he.

He represents me as a citizen of the United States of America. Because of this, my highest standards should be his lowest standards. It is his responsibility to be professional, not to make me laugh. I`ll read the funny papers if I want to laugh.

Its not so much the special Olympics comment (even though I thought it was distasteful), its the fact that our President chose to appear on a late-night talk show, which is usually reserved for Hollywood lowlifes. That alone speaks volumes of his political tactics and his personal character.

He`s the freakin` leader of the free world. That`s why people care. You gotta be careful what you say when you`re in his position. Being president of the United States basically means you are not human. You`re an icon. I make jokes all the time that I certainly wouldn`t make in public. It`s just bad judgement and poor taste.

If Bush had said it, everyone would`ve had a field day. Don`t deny that.

Preach on Morgan.

THANK YOU optimusmars!

Iambored153, I hate to break it to you but I`m pretty sure that your comment that "not one person would care" is a little extreme because I bet you anything that at least one person has found this a little wrong or offensive, actually... FOR SURE MORE THAN ONE PERSON HAS. I do not have any relatives or friends who are mentally handicapped... but I still think it was inappropriate for a man who is supposed to be our president and represent our country with class to make a crack about his bowling abilities being comparable to the abilities of those who are mentally handicapped. I believe anyone with a heart would think it was distasteful. Your generalization of NOBODY finding it offensive was far too broad, or else we wouldn`t be having this debate.

I think what Obama was saying is that Jay praising him eventhough he didn`t do very well is like the Special Olympics. When Jay says, "No, that`s very good Mr. President" in a somewhat sympathetic, mostly sarcastic tone, Barack says, "This is kind of like the Special Olympics or something."

If that`s the case, it would be slightly offensive. But please Twilight, I get what your saying about the publicity, but don`t give Obama credit for making the statement.

"Obama did not "diss" handicap people. My father helped to create the special olympics in the 70s. After Obama`s comment (which actually stated that some day Obama might become good enough to play against people in the special olympics) 8 million people viewed the special olympics website. That`s 8 million more people who now know what the special oplympics really is. And ontop of that tomorrow (3/21) is National Down Syndrome Day. What Obama truly did was a good thing. Saying that he "dissed" handicapped people is an insult, to Obama and to handicapped people. It`s very imature when people take offense to things that should never have been deemed offensive in the first place." I posted this comment under the other video about Obama. I`m glad to see that other people agree that it was just a joke.

The Special Olympics (created by the Kennedys in memory of one who was, tragically, lobotomized, something they did to save the family from embarrassment...) isn`t just for mentally-challenged. There are plenty of participants who will be hurt by this joke. (Not that it would be okay otherwise.)

Instead of going for the special olympics joke he should have went with "I`m at the bowling level of a 6 year old" or something to that effect. No need to go straight to the special olympics. As for the comments saying there is more important poo to worry about agreed but certain people will work with as much stuff as possible to diss Obama. I voted McCain but so far Obama isn`t that bad. People just need to realize that it`s gonna take some time before poo gets in place and nothing is going to happen immediatly.

OK, did anyone stop to think that maybe Barack was referring to how Jay was patronizing him over his score? I love it how everybody just jumps to either berate the man or defend him and then they don`t look at the statement itself. It`s basically like someone sees someone dead and one guy says, "He`s dead, its a murder and this guy did it." Another says, "Nuh Uh! This other guy did it..." And no one stops to check if it was a suicide or natural death. I`m sorry if I interrupted the shouting match... I was just compelled to finally create an account because of the nonsense. Also apologize if someone already said this... I wasn`t gonna go reading all the comments that say the same things.

I really don`t care that people aren`t making a big deal about it, because it isn`t a big deal.

And I really don`t care that if Bush would have done this, it would have been everywhere. Why? Because Bush said so many stupid things and fumbled over his words so much and people hated him so much, he couldn`t say or do anything without being made fun of.
It`s not that Obama is loved so much that there is this difference, it`s that Bush was so hated.

While it might have been a bit distasteful, I do not see that he meant any harm in his statement. It, to me, seems a matter of focus. There is the whole `oh he totally ripped on the Special Olympics` mentality. I saw it more of `the Special Olympics bowlers can do better than I can`. The point of the matter, I think, is that he was showing he is just a normal guy... I am lucky to hit 129 too.

Why must we always assume the message is negative or there is harm in what was said. I suppose it`s probably better that we miss the other 9 minutes and 59 seconds of what he had to say and focus in on one blown way out of proportion statement.

It`s not like you haven`t ever said something insensitive or off-color. He is just as human as you or I.

Nope, he gets away with it... he`s just way too smooth to have put his foot in it. If Bush had said it, given the number of bloopers he made during his term, I think the PC lobby would have jumped on him and torn him a new one. With Obama you just somehow know it wasn`t meant in any bad way.

And, I dont mean to blow your minds here but, cripples usually lack control of their limbs. Which actually hinders their ability to preform simple actions or activites, such as sports.

I know its crazy right!?

And by the way Corrine, are you calling me a troll? I`m not a troll just because I feel it necessary to stand up against people who deem it socially acceptable to insult another group of people (in this case the disabled). But I am done with this conversation, so leave your rude comments outside please.

Final score:

Me: 100
CharlieA: 0
Tainteddeity: -100 (That would be an epic fail for those of you keeping score!)

It should be obvious by now that brescoach is a troll of the first order.

Let`s just ignore him. He made that comment because he WANTED to get a negative reaction.

And you fail at simple short-term memory exercises. You said it was "typical" of him since he`s from the south. I too am from the south and I don`t think or feel that way at all. YOU however made a generalization implicating all people from that region with your remarks!

Taint: So as long as the general populace considers a group incapable at something, it`s alright to mock them??? which ALL minority groups have at some point been treated thusly. And it was socially acceptable at that time to treat them that way. THAT is my comparison! Why is it no longer alright to insult other minority groups, but alright to insult the disabled???Besides, how do you know "most...would be bad at bowling"? Have you ever seen them bowl? Have you done a large case study on this? Or was that just a slip of your tongue???

sure, it might seem like a mild thing to say, but people need to realise that if Bush, McCain, Palin...if ANYONE on the right side of the political spectrum said anything like this, they would be DESTROYED. I mean, they would be completely attacked and exposed, and we all know it.

That`s probably because most people in the special olympics would be bad at bowling whereas being black isn`t a bad thing...
You fail at comparison.

"Wait so you think that by typing "nigg" and not finishing the word it shows that you have lack of racism? Can you explain this to me?"

Because if I wanted to be truly racist and offensive, then why wouldn`t I have typed the whole word? I don`t care what color his skin is. I care that he`s a bad person who doesn`t give a crap about my liberties, my country or my constitution. I also didn`t like the guy before him for the same reasons.

Also, the word "retard" is just as offensive as the word "n*gger".

brescoach, you gotta be kidding me. If you`re going to make an idiotic racist joke, at least make a funny idiotic racist joke. But I guess you can`t expect much in the way of wit from an undereducated, xenophobic ass.

Whatever.

Troll

@Concetra: People like brescoah thrive in forums like this because they think they`re safe. He`d NEVER say that in public for fear of the ass-whipping he`d receive from the majority.

Democrats are allowed to mock the mentally and phisically retarded. Back in 1994, Al Gore called Oliver North "the colonel of untruth" and said Mr. North was counting on political contributions from "the extra-chromosome (people with down syndrome) right wing" and was never called out on it by the media. So, nothing new here.

Anyone who studies rhetoric or psychology knows that there is no "slip of the tongue". What we say is how we truly feel. And clearly he feels that people in special olympics aren`t worth anything athletically. Nevermind the fact that I would put money on the special olympian over Obama any day of the week, in ANY sport!

What surprises me about people blowing this off is that they either don`t realize, or don`t want to acknowledge what this reveals about his character. The man has a deep-seeded dislike for anyone he deems "beneath" him. This can be seen in all his speeches, mannerisms, and body language. Personally I think that mostly stems from the teachings of his "spiritual advisor" (probably one of the most racist men on earth). But no one is saying anything (CNN has this buried deep) because he`s the media`s mistress and because he`s black. I promise you, had he been a white President making a comment like this about blacks, EVERYONE would be all over it for MONTHS!
