On a less important note, didn`t Jay Leno retire in the summer?
nvm, you`ve probably already heard it.
Probably the most insane thing I`ve read was, " What Obama truly did was a good thing. Saying that he "dissed" handicapped people is an insult, to Obama and to handicapped people."
Wow, just... wow. So now what he said is a GOOD thing. "No need to apologize Mr. President. You`ve brought attention to the cause by angering so many people. If you`d just call them all `inferior`, I think we could set a new record for charitable contributions."
Morgan, you`re absolutely right. If it were Bush, this would be the last straw. I`m not saying Obama is a bad guy for this, but so many people are so up on him as the Second Coming that he can do no wrong.
Obama WAS taking a shot at disabled people, diminishing their contributions and capabilities (despite overcoming huge obstacles) by making that joke. Heck, he wouldn`t have made that heartfelt apology otherwise.
As far as saying he is just "human" or is just a guy, well, he is held up to a higher standard. That`s why we don`t just put any old schmuck in office. The same reason we criticize him for this is the same reason we put so much stock in what he has to say when he has good ideas. We LISTEN to the guy and hang on his every word, because it`s so important.
The left invented political correctness. They INVENTED getting offended at jokes like this.
The left is lame."
You can`t invent morals and beliefs. It`s not a physical object,
The left invented political correctness. They INVENTED getting offended at jokes like this.
The left is lame.
To everyone who says the comment was messed up: if you were out with your friends, and they made a joke like "man i suck, i should be in the special olympics" you`d laugh, wouldn`t you?Exactly.
Obama`s becoming president didn`t automatically make him a super human. He is ONLY human.
I guess you look at it very differently when the guy in question is actually ruling your country.
I don`t think he means to say disabled people are bad at sports, just that they have a disadvantage, and so does he.
Its not so much the special Olympics comment (even though I thought it was distasteful), its the fact that our President chose to appear on a late-night talk show, which is usually reserved for Hollywood lowlifes. That alone speaks volumes of his political tactics and his personal character.
If Bush had said it, everyone would`ve had a field day. Don`t deny that.
Preach on Morgan.
Iambored153, I hate to break it to you but I`m pretty sure that your comment that "not one person would care" is a little extreme because I bet you anything that at least one person has found this a little wrong or offensive, actually... FOR SURE MORE THAN ONE PERSON HAS. I do not have any relatives or friends who are mentally handicapped... but I still think it was inappropriate for a man who is supposed to be our president and represent our country with class to make a crack about his bowling abilities being comparable to the abilities of those who are mentally handicapped. I believe anyone with a heart would think it was distasteful. Your generalization of NOBODY finding it offensive was far too broad, or else we wouldn`t be having this debate.
If that`s the case, it would be slightly offensive. But please Twilight, I get what your saying about the publicity, but don`t give Obama credit for making the statement.
A: Not being retarded.
Now, if Obama had said THAT joke, then it would be offensive, eh?
no biggy, they`ll probably get a ton of good PR from all of this. obama`s too golden to let something like that take him down.
loadstar, that was lol-some.
shouldnt have said it. but if yu think about it, obama hasnt had too many things he shouldnt have said... compared to palin :)
it was just because he was being applauded for not ACTUALLY doing that well, by other people`s standards
and chanchester, look up the loltheory, it`s what you just commited
The Special Olympics (created by the Kennedys in memory of one who was, tragically, lobotomized, something they did to save the family from embarrassment...) isn`t just for mentally-challenged. There are plenty of participants who will be hurt by this joke. (Not that it would be okay otherwise.)
I am more offended by the person who would consider it to be a joke to begin with.
To be offended by that, you`d have to be an angry, racist, handicapped, pro-bowler with an attitude.
Where`s the joke, where`s the offence?
I completely agree with you on that point. :-)
I really don`t care that people aren`t making a big deal about it, because it isn`t a big deal.
And I really don`t care that if Bush would have done this, it would have been everywhere. Why? Because Bush said so many stupid things and fumbled over his words so much and people hated him so much, he couldn`t say or do anything without being made fun of. It`s not that Obama is loved so much that there is this difference, it`s that Bush was so hated.
Why must we always assume the message is negative or there is harm in what was said. I suppose it`s probably better that we miss the other 9 minutes and 59 seconds of what he had to say and focus in on one blown way out of proportion statement.
It`s not like you haven`t ever said something insensitive or off-color. He is just as human as you or I.
Meh, what can you do though, thats the way it is.
You mean like bush?
"Well if the only thing people can attempt to bash him for during his presidency so far is for comparing himself to special ed kids, then he`s doing pretty good. I`m sure the republicans will have a ball with this video, though."
The only thing? Pfft
"You must be republican. :)"Ad homonim
Now as far as my reaction to this.... I`m not mad that he said it, I`m mad I haven`t seen it on every major news network over and over again. If it was Bush, it would be everywhere, why not treat Obama the same?
riight mr 37
Did you know that a lot of the KIDS I work with at SPECIAL OLYMPICS call each other Retards?! They don`t care, and the parents who saw this last night don`t care. It`s not like he said, "I hate retards." He was making a comment about scores of Sp. Ol kids. Which, statistically ARE lower. I have about 6 kids that beat 120 every week, I also have 60 others who can`t break 100.
Maybe that was just a thinly veiled allusion to the former president...
If Bush would have said it, holy hell would have blown and it would`ve been the lead story of every media channel.
That said, I like Obama more now for his `tard joke. Makes him more normal like me--I`ve been know to crack a retard joke every now and again--we all have.
But Obama makes me feel better about my bowling, now. :)
I`m thinking, of course, of: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woYG6Uq6O...
Therefore, Obama told a joke.
I hate the fact that today everything anybody says - celebrity, politician, joe blogs has to be analysed for any trace of anything that may potentially offend somebody. Its SO PATHETIC. And yes, I know, he is the president he shouldn`t say anything offensive, and be prejudiced blah blah. Like I said before though, he is human! He makes jokes and somotimes, they are bad and perhaps illadvised! SO what!
Besides, over here we have good old Prince Philip putting his big old foot in his mouth in far more worrying ways!
I know its crazy right!?
Its a well known fact.
Me: 100CharlieA: 0Tainteddeity: -100 (That would be an epic fail for those of you keeping score!)
It should be obvious by now that brescoach is a troll of the first order.
Let`s just ignore him. He made that comment because he WANTED to get a negative reaction.
And you fail at simple short-term memory exercises. You said it was "typical" of him since he`s from the south. I too am from the south and I don`t think or feel that way at all. YOU however made a generalization implicating all people from that region with your remarks!
Because if I wanted to be truly racist and offensive, then why wouldn`t I have typed the whole word? I don`t care what color his skin is. I care that he`s a bad person who doesn`t give a crap about my liberties, my country or my constitution. I also didn`t like the guy before him for the same reasons.
Also, the word "retard" is just as offensive as the word "n*gger".
I would say that your level of ignorance is astonishing, but it really isn`t.
As for this sh*t:
<Another bonehead mistake from President Nigg... oops slip of the tongue...President Obama.>
brescoach, you gotta be kidding me. If you`re going to make an idiotic racist joke, at least make a funny idiotic racist joke. But I guess you can`t expect much in the way of wit from an undereducated, xenophobic ass.
@Concetra: People like brescoah thrive in forums like this because they think they`re safe. He`d NEVER say that in public for fear of the ass-whipping he`d receive from the majority.
The Internet: Home to narrow-minded, yellow-bellied wussy cowards since 1992.
Yeah only a coward uses the N word on internet forums. I dare you to say that to an African American in real life if you have the balls.
Note to Special Olympics: KOLLO from IAB has changed the name of your organization. Please update your web site...
You know if Dubya or McCain said this they would get pounded.
Nope. That comes with the job. As president, you get scrutinized. Frankly, I don`t see a problem with that.
Insulted no. Not exactly PC, but not really a nasty comment either.
