Wind power is useless, 90% of all power generated by it needs to be backed up, yeilding only 10% of usable power. Nuclear is the future, not this feel-good, completely cost-ineffective, green hippy bullpoo.

So victory7, who from his age range hasn`t yet completed high school is an authority on energy how?

No offense kid, I`m sure you`re fairly smart, but all you`re doing is regurgitating whatever right-wing pseudoscience you hear around the dinner table.

Even if it`s only "10% usable power" as you claim (without citing any sources... there`s a surprise) the fact remains that you STILL get that "10% usable power" that you DIDN`T have before.

And I agree, Nuclear energy is a realistic, if unpleasant option. So I`ll make a deal with you... You build all the Nuclear plants you want... as long as we can store the resulting hot waste in YOUR state.

Hey victory, so what if 90% of it is unusable. You`re still getting that 10% energy from a clean, renewable source that doesn`t leave any impact on the environment. Frankly, I`d rather have a 90% inefficient power source that is eco-friendly, than a 90% efficient one that has the potential of dumping waste products into the environment.

Also, I wonder if your 10% is the "Capacity Factor", which is now higher than 10%, and does not indicate lost energy, but indicates that the wind isn`t blowing 100% of the time.

You build all the Nuclear plants you want... as long as we can store the resulting hot waste in YOUR state.

There is already a facility in Yucca Mountain, That has been assigned to store all the spent fuel rods. The problem comes from NIMBYs (Not In My Back Yard) not wanting it to be transported there, through thier state(s). The transport containers have been thoroughly tested dozens of ways, In crashes, Fires, Drops, etc. But they still hold it up because of unreasonable fears.

Victory is correct Solar and Wind are unreliable and there is no way, Currently, To economically store their peak energy to make them so. Plus all solar and wind projects are subsidized, Otherwise they aren`t profitable.

Clean coal is the way to go right now.
    Check out Future Gen
This is the way to go, Until we can get rid of the NIMBYs and build enough nuclear plants.

there is a such thing as clean coal. i think its like coal power from certain rocks or something likie that. but what the problem is is it is a finite source of energy, and it effs up the enviorment. not with poluition, but with taken away a lot of the earth (please dont say "there is basically an unlimited amount of earth, dumbass!")

solar and windare good because we can waste as much as we want. it will always be there (unless the sun gives out and the earth settles at a universal temperature and pressure). plus, you can store the pwoer from wind. it just takes a bettery the size of a car to store a little bit of it

Right-wing psuedoscience? I hardly take offense being a libertarian, and I ignore republican drabble. Wind and solar are perfectly economoical for individual applications, like generators, water heaters, calculators, or single homes. But they will never have the cost-efficiency to replace grid power; you get more power with less money (and not to mention less land usage) with any other power source over all these "green" energies combined. How is nuclear power unpleasant? And it`s a deal, I live in Arizona with the Palo Verde nuclear plant already, no one gives a damn if we put rods in an inhospitable desert mountain. And once fusion power is developed, power will be almost unlimited and incredibly clean.

Victory7, there are solar plants in the works--I`m working on one myself for SkyFuel--that can generate the same amount of power as a nuclear power plant. We are building a field in New Mexico based on a design we have in Colorado using the world`s largest trough concentrators. Each one is 400 feet long and 25 feet across and a field of 1000 can generate 150-200 megawatts--about the same as a large fossil fuel or nuclear plant. When we use molten salt as our heat transfer media we can store heat for days without loss in case of inclement weather... Battery storage is a joke--heat storage is far more efficient and leaves a smaller carbon footprint in the long run (batteries are terible for the environment). Check out SkyFuel`s website.

Also, with the technology being used in the heat transfer process, there is very little loss. There is a pipe running the length of the concentrator that is encapsulated in glass and between the glass and the pipe is a nitrogen enriched vacuum. This minimizes heat loss so we operate at 94% efficiency. The reflectors are silver-coated polymer so there is no glass in the panels-- Less money to manufacture, less weight, less cost for repair, and again, about 95% efficient in reflection of the sun. We get a concentration rate of about 10 suns on that pipe. The molten salt averages 850 degrees for our production plant. Oil can be heated to around 750 and water/glycol up to around 350 degrees... Run that through a heat exchanger, make steam, spin a turbine, make electricity--and the initial cost is far less than any Nuke plant without any residual effects on the environment.

That is awesome... now if only I had a webcam...

as for this debate about clean coal and such... the only way coal can be clean is if the pollutants can be put to good use, such as making bio fuel from algae.

As for Nuclear, I am unsure why we do not just start launching our radioactive waste into space with the space shuttle or something, and have it all go to the sun...

For those wondering about "clean coal":

Clean Coal pollutes less than standard coal when burnt, but not significantly so. Whatever pollution is saved by burning "clean coal" instead of standard coal is lost when you take into account the amount of pollutants produced during the process of making the coal "clean" in the first place.

And I`ll take the Nuclear Plant option, including storing it in my state (New Mexico).

If the idiots would just get out of the way, we could easily end our dependence upon foreign energy. Let them DRINK their oil.
