Nearly half of the kids in this survey admit that Rihanna was to blame for her boyfriend, Chris Brown, beating her.

I agree, unless she was trying to kill him at the time. The idea of reasonable force always applies and choking is a potentially fatal attack.

"....anyone else want to tell them that their maths sucks, or shall I?"

Not necessarily, depending on how "blame" and "reponsibility" are defined. They might have been separate questions. Or the study might be particularly crap and is counting the same answers twice.

It might be that roughly half thought Rihanna started the violence and was therefore responsible, roughly half thought Chris Brown was responsible either because he`s a man or because he caused more serious injuries and, in a seperate question, roughly half thought that both of them were to blame *to some extent*. That doesn`t necessarily mean equally to blame.

The story is a content-free spin on an apparently meaningless study.

Wow.. that`s a bit worrying. Im surprised by high how the figure is to a certain extent. I`m not surprised that so many kids may think that way.

Ive noticed it here a little bit, but more so on youtube when this comes up. Teens will defend their idol no matter what, he can do no wrong in their eyes. Its worrying. I`m sure they will grow out of it. I guess its part of being young and immature and easily-influenced?

I would be willing to bet that if this was a domestic violence incident which occured between two other celebrities, and an idol wasn`t involved, or the one they almost worship was the one on the receving end, their answers would be very different.

"We`ve got less straightforward "real man" sexist burble from people like maddux32."

Listen Angilon....

I come from an old school ideology that holds men accountable to certain standards when dealing with women who are physically weaker, less-durable, and generally unable to defend themselves against a man (proven through many years of scientific study).

I believe it to be the social responsibility of every man to not abuse their position of physical dominance.

And if that statement to you is considered "real man sexist burble", than I apologize....

This thread is full of stuff to piss me off.

We`ve got straightforward sexist burble culminating in britt566`s misandry.

We`ve got less straightforward "real man" sexist burble from people like maddux32.

We`ve got wilful misinterpretation of the contentless spin on an unknown survey, e.g. alk3v`s post.

This thread is mostly a blivet.

I am slightly curious about one thing:

britt566: Since you hate all men, why do you want to have sex with a man? You`d be better off with a vibrator. "it kinda sucks how a girl can talk poo and slap a guy but i guy can only yell back, and if he even pushes her he is shunned and usually charged. tough love"

Look, if you can`t take a slap from a woman, you don`t deserve to be labeled a man.

Second, if you are threatened enough by a woman slapping you that you slap her back, you don`t deserve to be labeled a man.

Third, if a woman decides to go off on you, you should be strong enough to be able to at least hold her down until she`s calm, so nobody has to get hurt.

The one time a woman tried to go off on me, thats exactly what happened. She slapped me first and tried to follow with a closed fist right hook, I caught her wrist, flung her around so I was behind her and held her arms there so she couldn`t move. She struggled for about 30 seconds, grew tired, I asked her if she was calm, and that was the end of it.

Later we went to dinner, made up, crisis diverted.

Baalthazag I think it`s you who has I`ve confused. I in no way insinuated that she has no part in her own fate. My point is merely that whatever choice she makes regarding the state of the relationship, has no bearing on the total amount of guilt placed on Chris Brown. Insurance companies are a business, and you`d be hardpressed to find someone who thinks they provide the service out of the goodness of their heart. Someone who leaves their door unlocked is only responsible to those who are protecting them ie. the insurance company, and themselves. That`s because in failing to prevent robbery they stand to leave room for potential harm to 2 parties. Even if such precaution was not taken the robber would still be prosecuted in the same fashion, because it was he not the victim who commited and immoral, unethical, and unlawful crime.? Is that clearer?

i dont like rihanna i think she is ugly and looks like a man. But any one that gets abused...how does it make it their fault? How does it make it her fault of she "cheated" on him doesnt give him a right to beat the poo out of her.
The only time I think a man should lay his hands on a woman is if she starts to beat the poo out of him...somtimes women are stronger then men and logically i don`t think that men and women should be treated differently when it comes to fighting or beating eachother up. but when it comes to looking the way she did. How can you say it was her fault? a little slap may of been fine, but not remodeling her face.
And somewhere in me still thinks they did this for publicity...
then again this is mine and my best friends opinion(she is sitting next to me also telling me to write some of this, both of us has been in an abusive relationships...)

BumbleBB:
You are confusing entirely separate concepts.

I believe it is irresponsible for someone to leave their door unlocked. If they leave their door unlocked they are partially responsible for the crime.

Insurance companies agree with me, which is why they won`t cover you in cases where you bear that degree of responsibility.

It is entirely appropriate to suggest that failure to take adequate precautions gives you a degree of responsibility.

That is completely separate from saying "You deserve to be robbed" or "It is your fault you were robbed".

No, it is the jackass who committed the crime who is to blame. He should be punished. The victim should not.

However, to suggest they bare no responsibility is ridiculous. Similarly, it is not unreasonable to say Rihanna bears some responsibility for staying in an abusive relationship.

Chris should still be imprisoned. She should not.

This news story about a survey doesn`t show anything. The figures don`t add up, there`s no breakdown, there`s no indication of what the questions were, there`s no indication of what was said prior to the questions, there`s no indication of any attempts to get a representative sample...

There`s nothing but spin, no real content at all.

I could create a survey to get almost any figures that I wanted to get and I could write a story about it making any point I wanted to make. Almost anyone could.

I am impressed with Casey Corcoran for going against the norm so strongly by not using this for sexual politics.

“We do know that teen dating violence or intimate partner violence cuts across all cultures, classes, genders.”

It`s very bold to acknowledge that fact.

Quakor, your example is a not relevant, as you`re implying Chris Brown has no control over the direction his fists are flying in relation to where Rhianna`s face is... Bottom line is he has ultimate control over whether he picks his hands up and pummels a girl who is half his size. Like I said she needs help. Should we comdemn a person for a bad decision that hurts themself only, or the one whose actions put others at risk? You`re taking us back to the old "She was dressed liked a whore, so I raped her" arguement.

Female 1,112
To anyone saying that a woman in an abusive relationship is responsible. If that is what you believe is true, so be it, however, it is absolutely NO EXCUSE for domestic violence. Most abusers who beat their spouses beat children too. Most abusers wear their victims down to a point that they feel they are to blame, and that they have no options. Statistics aside, the person who went too far, who has the most undeniable responsibility in this situation is the abuser. If he had killed her, would you blame her for dieing? She needs help, that`s clear. But blaming her for a man brutalising her is counter-productive.

(At the end of the day, you take the "both" score when working out how many people put blame on Rihanna, because that is how many people blame Rihanna.

Just because they are also blaming Chris doesn`t make them not blame Rihanna. In my example, just because they own "both" does not mean they are no longer a car owner or a truck owner.

0

Male 4,546
52 people own a car.
45 people own a truck.
27 people own both.
3 people own neither.

100 people.
Car owners: 52%
Truck owners: 45%
Both owners: 27%
Neither: 3%

Adding the percentages together: 127%.
Yes, you can do that. Yes it works. yes it goes over 100%. No, that doesn`t make it wrong.

Does that mean I think Chris should have hit her? No. It doesn`t.

So drat you survey for drawing the conclusion for something you never asked. Why the holy drat can`t you ask a straightforward question?

I would have answered all of the questions in the same way, and I in no way agree with the conclusions drawn from them.

I think Chris is a prick who needs a good beating of his own, and I think Rihanna is a misguided victim.

That doesn`t mean I can`t think she needs to get out of this abusive relationship and is responsible for staying in it.

(Also, she is ruining his career. That doesn`t mean I think that`s wrong).

Okay, so Rhianna is to blame for getting beat up.

A man who does this to a woman is not at fault.

Even if she started the fight, even if she started hitting him, there is no reason for him to fly off the handle that bad and beat her like someone who tries to knife you in a back alley.

I have been close to hitting one of my girlfriends, but I was drunk and she was being violent, so I shoved her out of the way and told her to stop before I did something I would regret, and she got the message. Had she kept going and I had hit her, I know I would not have done it that bad.

Chris Brown is responsible 100%, unless she was refusing to stay in the kitchen.

That`s the scary thing about how much family violence still exists. Rhianna was really lucky in a sense, that one of those blows didn`t happen to land in such a way that it would kill her. The chances it`s going to stop is little, but educating kids who see nothing but violence would help.

Y`know what? If I were asked, "Do you think it was Rihanna`s fault that she was hit by Chris Brown?" I would say yes too. Not because I condone domestic abuse, but because she knowingly goes back to an abusive partner. I get the feeling that`s how a lot of people took the question as well, and answered as such. But seriously, I think there was either a miscommunication, or the kids didn`t understand the full scope of what happened.

Or perhaps the example provided was too specific, they`re tired of hearing about it, and they just don`t give a crap. -___-

If they wanted to do an accurate survey, they`d have to cut out specifics like who and when, and just ask about general abuse in relationships.
This poll is just to cash in on the hype involving those two, methinks. `-`
