To put it in perspective: Albert Einstein"s IQ was believed to be about 160. The average IQ is 100.

I always thought the highest IQ score you could get was 170... Maybe I imagined reading that.

I agree, the Mensa IQ test is a joke. I scored an IQ of 144, I only joined because my mum pays my members fee :D Stupid questions like `A guy is gonna commit suicide, but he didn`t. Why didn`t he?` and crap :S

kids with low ages will have a higher IQ because of the formula they use to calculate it. (measly 126 here, and will drop as I get older and senile)

If you want to be pedantic:

Who says I was talking to you, and not one of the other people who said the same thing? (Ryan, Monday, Tuxman, Poy, etc.)

Guilty conscience?

Anyway, I quoted yours as a catchall for all the others. I felt this was fair saying as you were agreeing with the guy who started with "Lol, there are 6 billion people on earth".

I find it unlikely the "lol" was because he finds population figures hilarious, and much more likely that the comment was mocking something. (Either the kid or the importance of the story).

99% of the people posting here saying they know their IQ are lying. I`m a Psychology major and even if you get tested, they still keep it confidential unless your a genius (like the kid in this article) or a moron with a lower than average IQ.

Also yes the average is 100, but the average in society is anywhere from 85-115. They keep IQ scores confidential, because someone with an 85 IQ is really no worse off than someone with a 115 IQ. But if they got their score they wouldn`t feel that way, they`d think they`re dumb.

tl;dr - Most of you are lying through your teeth.

"What is astonishing here, is you`ve managed to take the number 6 billion, a number you obviously cannot comprehend, do the sums, come back with 6000, a number you can comprehend, and you think that`s a lot."

How did you conclude that I can`t comprehend how much 6 billion is? I really would like to know how you came up with such an assumption. Anyway, I think you read too much into my comment and came up with something that was never there. I wasn`t bashing the kid in any way. Did I say that IQ tests are overrated? No. Did I brag about how intelligent I am and that he isn`t that smart? Nope. I was just doing the math.

There is no verifiable way to quantify a child`s intelligence, especially at such a young age.

Maybe not but if you give him a random date back to 2000 and he can tell you the day of the week I would say this kid is a bit more intelligent than any of us here.

he may or may not be on the austistic spectrum. thats not for us to decide. just because he seems to `sort things out` in his brain like an autistci savant it doesn`t mean he is one. if he did have an ASD i`m sure someone would have picked up on it by now..seeing as he is 6 (even `mild` autistic disorders can be picked up by age 5 due to behaviours)
must say though..someone said autistic people look different facially? thats not true, not many autistic people i know look differnt from anyone else. my son has aspergers for example and you couldn`t tell by looking at him...unless he was pulling a funny face at the time LOL

High IQ means pretty much nothing to a six-year-old. The definition of IQ is mental age / physical age * 100, so his mental age is still only ten and a half, which is... four years older than he`s supposed to be? If you were 12 and had a score of 100 (perfectly average), you`d still be smarter than this kid.

IQ says nothing about usefulness in society, either. Some people with low IQs are crucial to our wellbeing, and I know some perfectly useless drones with high IQ scores.

Dr. Asperger of Asperger Syndrome(mild form of autism)fame was noted to have believed that many great artists and thinkers throughout history probably had some form of autism. There`s a guy now who can look at a city scape and then reproduce it exactly in a drawing. He`s autistic. I knew a young lady with autism who could tell you the day of any date of ANY year.

Don:

Agreed. I have a friend who is a legitimate genius (he came 3rd place at the National mathematics competition, went to International math olympiads, took BC calculus freshman year) and if it was unscrambling words, I bet he would get above average, but not a killer score.

And Mikhaillot:
No offense to your parents, but waste of money.

But then again this is coming from a college-obsessed high-schooler, who considers anything that does not contribute to a college app useless. Meh, pride I suppose.

The problem with some IQ tests used in public education or online is they test knowledge or experience over logic and the ability to detect obscure patterns (problem solving) etc. I have taken an IQ test that was such a joke because it was asking for definitions and doing word-scrambles with obscure words that I just stopped. That`s not testing intelligence--it is testing experience which has nothing to do with one`s ability to reason. If a person--even a genius--has never heard a word or seen it used, they will never get the word-scramble or the definition; it`s a trick question designed to measure experience and that`s all...

"MENSA IS A SCAM"

Angry because you couldn`t get in? There`s no actual scam, it`s a social gathering of people who think they`re better than the rest of us because they are smart, and the Mensa website confirms this.

Don`t worry though, I`m of the opinion that its just something to try to look cool with:

-Check it out, I`m in the smart club.
-Nice, how did you get in?
-I passed the test, and I pay money.
-You`re pretty dumb.

"Take the IQ 10 times.. you`ll never repeat the score.

The IQ test is a joke"

It`s not exactly supposed to be taken numerous times. I do agree that there are flaws in the department of scoring someone`s intelligence, but I do think that if there was an "IQ Test" officially licensed by the board of IQ Inc. that it would wield a better accuracy, since everybody would be taking the same test. The test would evaluate memory, math, logic and whatever else is related to intelligence. Then the test would validate how smart you are at that point in time in your life, compared to other people who took it.

"Having a good memory is not always a good thing, what if he witnessed a murder? He would never forget it."

Being stupid is not always a good thing, what if you said something stupid? You would never realize how dumb you sound. Nobody would forget a murder unless they repressed it or got Alzheimer`s disease. Having a good memory is ALWAYS a good thing, trust me, I used to have a much better memory, but then I went to high school and got high a bunch of times for 4 years.... I can definitely say I wish I hadn`t since I could easily remember an 8 alphanumeric sequence... I now have difficulty remembering 4 letters. Although the "smart" portion was not affected, I can still do algebra and write very eloquently and use big words in daily conversations, but remembering what I had for breakfast is another thing.

If you know nothing about it, then why make absolute statements?

"Having a good memory is not always a good thing, what if he witnessed a murder? He would never forget it."
I`d say no one would forget that.

If he`s autistic, he`s a lesser form, and it`s probably one of the forms that is not, by definition of autism, truly autistic in the sense we know it. Autism has become its own category with disorders which have little significance to the original autism.
I would almost guarantee though, that either his temporal lobe is more developed and possibly even bigger. (Yes, there is a correlation. ~40% correlation in fact.)

I don`t know why everyone is so quick to say he might be autistic. I am, and I know you can`t tell by just how smart someone is. I know lots of average autistic people, and probably just as many non-autistic smart people. That kind of decision needs to be made by a doctor...

They shouldn`t tell him his IQ when he is a kid though- My teacher was told mine and she treated me funny and made me even more of an outcast... Turned out for the better because half the people at my school were jerks anyways and had no real value in a friendly way.

carolinads13, I agree that memory is not, by itself, an indicator of intelligence. Look at this kid and his age though. usually all children his age are being taught IS memory function. Alphabet and basic math.

This kids mind is retaining loads and loads of information, with the ability to recall it quickly and easily.

give him 3 years, and he`ll either be a freak with a huge memory, or he`ll be accelerating through educational material like the intro to Doogie Howser.

I don`t want to downplay his intelligence, cuz he tested a frickin 176 (!), but having a good memory does not necessairily imply being smart. It only means you can recite facts back. Intelligence is more of how well you figure out stuff.

There`s nothing to imply the child is autistic. the skill shown with the dates and day of the week is something they`ve shown Savants able to do frequently, it sounds like this is something that this kid managed to learn and retain rather than just spitting out answers like a calculator.

The memory capacity needed for that is... just wow.

He`s not that specialized though, and by the descriptions he activily participates in social settings with out the mental and emotional impediments that autisim (sp?) would cause. and his parents are smart enough to want to keep him around children his own age so he develops social skills.

This kid gonna be crazy as hell to see when he`s older.

The IQ of 176 is compared to his age group. If he took an adult IQ test at this time the results would be much lower. IQ averages are standardized for specific age groups, the average for that age group being 100. When you say you can do all that stuff, that`s because you are older. Imagine what he will be able to do when he`s your age.

I was jogging at a highschool track once and the girls` gym teacher cornered me with all her students there. She noticed I am a Marine and asked how far I have to run for my physical test. I said 3 miles. She scoffed and said she could do it. I was polite and let her have her moment, but what I failed to add was if she can run three miles under fire, pick up the dead weight of your unconscious friend and make it to safety? I can.

"genius" is a relative term. His real genius will be apparent once he starts applying his knowledge. You can stuff all the information in the world into a smart brain, but if the guy doesn`t know how to apply said information...well.

Knowledge is the aquisition of data.
Wisdom is how you use said data.

well... i`ll agree the kids above average, but as for the 176..
IQ isn`t a set number until a little later on in development.
even then, its more of a range of possible numbers, say normally between 135-150.

the bottom line: did this kid test incredibly? hell yes he did.
BUT, his IQ should be tested in about 3 years, when its more stable, and multiple times in order to get an average.

for we know 176 could really be cutting it short for him.

There are two types of IQ, one measures you compared to peers and the other gives an absolute value. If this kid is a 176 compared to other 6 year old`s, that just means he`s an average high-school student. (which is still impressive. Im just sayin its not like he can understand and apply quantum field equations like a true genius can.)

IQ tests aren`t very accurate as it is... but you`re supposed to conduct them after a person is around 12-14.

The specific IQ tests are far more accurate than a general one.
The video is not fair. The way the tests are graded and what they actually grade alone would show why taking the iq of a 6 year old is not accurate in the least.

I`m sure there`s a ton of 6 year olds who could recite the back of all their pokemon cards, but since it`s not "academic" like naming the presidents, no one cares. At that age children soak up information and learning the order of presidents is almost like learning the alphabet, just replace letters with names. It`s all new to them anyway.

IQ tests are based on age thus making them all scewed to an extent. also most IQ tests are only valid at determining IQs for adults (18+). and the general rule is that the older they are the easier they are scored because they have been out of school longer and arent expected to keep up with everything in the world, but someone who has barely learned anything to begin with would likely be scored even easier. comparing IQs means nothing unless the people you are comparing are in the same age range.

`If he`s so smart, why would he want to be an astronaut?`
Because he`s 6? No matter how intelligent he is, he still has the mind of a 6 year old, of course he`s going to aim high.

"That means there are 6000 people with the same IQ or higher"

What is astonishing here, is you`ve managed to take the number 6 billion, a number you obviously cannot comprehend, do the sums, come back with 6000, a number you can comprehend, and you think that`s a lot.

He is smarter than 99.9999% of the people on earth.

If he posted in this comment thread, chances are 99.996% that he`s the smartest person in the room.

You are twice as likely to be struck by lightning, or winning an Olympic medal, 100 times more likely to win an Oscar, and one thousand times more likely to die violently in the next year, as you are to be smarter than this kid.

So, if you`re not giving him full credit, drat you.

IQ tests are flawed because the results are dependent upon the age of the individual being tested. The older someone gets, the more their score will go down no matter how intelligent they are. Therefore saying this kid is more intelligent than Einstein is most likely cra.p

Uhh... "1 person in a million has an IQ over 170"

So, eh, great... There`s 4 billion people in the world-- he`s one of the top 4 thousand smartest people in the world. What a story.

Everybody wanted to be an astronaut or something when they were small... I also hope they don`t make him skip grades because no matter how sharp his intelligence is, the rest of his mind and body is not exempt from developing like any other boy.

Isn`t funny how things like extreme intelligence and beauty are pure random luck? It just depends on how those chromosomes come together. Of course, you need somewhat smart or pretty parents to begin with, but to get to those outrageous levels you just need luck. He could have just as easily been mentally handicapped if he had developed differently.

Dakkar,
I took one of them internet tests and I could take 26 10-year old kids in a fight.
Oh, and my IQ is only 146 according to Mensa but really, what does that mean when you`re socially retarded.

I don`t know about the kid, but whoever wrote the 2nd half of this article needs a higher IQ... or a lesson on how to structure paragraphs.

That`s what I was thinking. That means there are about 6000 other people with the same IQ or higher.

I have a problem when people tell me that they have high IQ`s. It doesn`t matter how smart you are in terms of IQ to be considered a genius, because Genius has an artistic bent to it.
You need that artistic imagination to be truly considered a genius and most really smart people just don`t have it.

Don`t I feel special now...

I bet that memory helps. Mine`s usually good, but not photographic. Though I WOULD like to see the test that can accurately tell a 6-year-old`s IQ...

I may just be some guy from the dying towns of Western Pennsylvania, but bygummit, I`ll kick that kid`s ass in a game of football.

Oddly, that always has been a dream of mine, to play football against an entire team of 10 (or so) year olds and just leave a path of mangled little bodies in my wake.

Ranger2408 is right, it reflects a mental age and will probably decrease with time. I don`t think its an accurate way to measure intelligence as a child. And certainly it isn`t an accurate way to predict how intelligent he will be when he grows up.

Wait till` he grows up, then test him. Don`t turn him into a media clown when he`s 6.

Wow, he can count and knows his colors at six! He must be a miracle child! Let`s get an IQ test!

How do you even administer an IQ test to a six year old? I took one once, and you need to be on a 9th grade reading level to understand the vocabulary on some of the questions.

ranger2408, I dont think many 20-50 year olds could do the stuff at their age, which he is doing at his...

There is no `catching up` involved.

Actually that`s his mental age.
His iq when he hits adulthood will be alot lower due to the adjustment.
For example Marylin Mach Vos Savant was tested at an iq of 230 at the age of 10, Her mental age was 23.
When tested as an adult, she now has an iq of 186.
By no means unintelligent but that is quite a drop off.
Children showing these IQs early are just showing a higher mental age than their peers.
Most of them are quite average when others catch up.

Depending on the test used, you adjust IQ for age. Not to belittle this kid (his IQ is higher than mine), but just saying, a kid with IQ 176 is no more impressive than an adult with a 176 IQ, it isn`t going to grow to 5000 by the time he`s 30, it`ll still be 176.

Lots of other factors here too, but that`s just some of it.
