Why does this have to be an issue of race? Even if it is about Obama, it wouldn`t be comparing black people to monkeys. It`d be saying he`s as smart as a monkey, that a monkey could have developed the same stimulus bill. This is so melodramatic

the cartoon is not bad. it`s not like they were gunning down the prophet muhammed. i admit, it`s sort of a stretch to understand the true context of the joke if you don`t follow current events though. still, the protesters are voluntarily likening themselves to primates

not quite. if you get the joke it means you read the news and will link it to what happend in connecticut. the joke is; people think obama`s stimulous plan could very well have been planned out by a monkey, or chimp. thats all. its no deeper than that. its the people who made it deeper. people will analyze the hell out of anything to make it seem bigger than it really is. people need to relax. thats whats wrong with people, they`re always looking for something to fight about. its human nature.

Does no one else think that this is a perfect example of the fact that everyone is racist? The racist intent is inferred by the viewer. The person who made the comic is racist. I am racist. Anyone who gets the joke is racist, regardless of their reaction be it laughter, disdain, or outrage.

While the comic was obviously a shot at Obama. Who is to say whether the writer intended to be racist? It would be a great step in history for people to not associate an ape with a black person. The fact that so many people were offended, and that the writer possibly meant to offend, just shows that America has no will to move forward and view everyone as equals.

I have to admit, this does look really bad. Sure if you think about it-- No Obama didn`t write the stimulus. Yeah, everyone has called Bush a monkey before.

However, people do associate the stimulus with Obama being responsible. And Bush wasn`t black. I`m sorry but black people have dealt with that particular racist comparison en mass.

I just think this was a bad idea. It wasn`t funny. There was nothing particularly witty about this that made it worth what it could be seen as.

If it had been any other kind of insult towards the stimulus plan as long as it did NOT suggest President Obama as a freaking MONKEY, it would not have been racist, simply critical.

The fact that the officers make the comment that, after the monkey is dead, there would have to be someone else making the bill. That implies the monkey had something to do with the stimulus bill and one could almost directly link that as a shot top President Obama.

I am not pro republican. I am not pro democrat. I am a US Citizen tired of racism and that is ALL I see here.

Medi, it shouldn`t come as a shock at all.

Outside of work, free speech has a lot of room, however when you`re working in retail, in an office, for a newspaper, you don`t have much room.

Example, when I worked at a specific store, a black person came in and my manager told me to "keep an eye on him".

If I refused, I could, and most likely would have been legally fired for "refusing to perform my duties on the job".

This guy probably will be fired later down the line when everyone`s attention is turned to something else the media has found. The case will go under the radar and be completely missed by the public. That`s how a lot of crap has slipped through.

If I`m wrong, please disprove me. I would very much like to be. :(

i dont think there was any intention of racism. i believe it was implying that a monkey could do the same job as president obama when writing a stimulous plan. everyone needs to get racism off the brain and see people for what they are and what they do rather than the color of their skin. if this cartoon came out three months ago and it was implying that a monkey could do the same job as president bush, there would be no argument.

What are you saying? That the paper should be allowed to print whatever, or that the crowd should be allowed to protest? Both are examples of free speech.

I like al sharpton and he`s right this time. the cartoon was racist. an editor at the post should have caught it and stopped it. the fact it made it to print is indicative of out of touch management. It`s not about what they meant it to mean it`s about how it was received. They will come out with a stronger apology and perhaps fire the editor.

I`m not really giving an opinon on the issue, but to be fair, it`s an editorial cartoon. It`s a picture giving an opinion. Right or wrong, people should always be allowed to have an opinon and the right to voice them. Freedom of the press, don`t take it for granted. Some countries still don`t have it.

I disagree with the posts that it is not offensive to equate Bush with a chimp..Poor chimp. This is clearly a racist cartoon. The reason people are so up in arms? Many of us never thought we would see the day that a black man was elected president. My mother called me when he was elected and said "My god I lived to see a black president". We are white but still proud of Obama and the raceism shouldnt start alredy people are still in shock that he was even elected.

ITs a monkey, it doesnt say "OBAMA IS BLACK! THEREFORE HE LOOKS LIKE A MONKEY!" that would be racist. the same as the word "black" isnt racist unless i say "you black scum"

ANyway WE can call George bush a money and not obama, give me a break. You know what ill say it. OBama looks like a monkey!

Although the cartoon does compare, quite accuratley the shooting of the chimp with the writing of the stimulous, I don`t think its intenionally racist..BUT, the editor of the NY post should have recognised that it might cause offence and pulled it. Also, when G.W Bush was compared to a chimp, it was because he was as intelligent as one-if Obama were to be compared to a chimp, it would be a comparison purely based on appearance. Which is worse? People genuinly believing that you have the intelligence of a chimp, or merely saying you look like one? I know which one i`d rather...

Did anyone take the time to actually research what this is? For anyone who hasn`t, President Obama did NOT write the stimulus bill. It was Nancy Pelosi and other congress people. So the chimp can only be representative of them, Not Mr. Obama. Why does no one look into these things? Duckboy87 pointed this out a couple of posts ago, and people still don`t get it.

This cartoon was disgustingly racist. Notice how it was printed in black and white, yes BLACK and white. Also the comment in the speech bubble clearly says `...someone else to WRITE the next...` that`s dangerously close to the word white.

Write = white = black people are inferior.

I am sick off all of this racism that continues. People claim to think that their comments are innocent but they`re obviously not. Only the other day I heard a white man say `hello` to a black guy. Obviously discretely condemning him to hell. Disgusting.

"honestly, the comparison of obama to a monkey is very offensive"

Oh, but the comparison between George W. Bush to a monkey isn`t! I get it now...

And let`s not forget that the comic said "They`ll have to find someone else to WRITE the next stimulus bill."

Obama didn`t write a single word on the bill, he suggested it, approved it, and signed it.

Now, the bill is utter crap. I`m going to be getting $5-$13 extra in my paycheck. That`s going to get me nothing, unless I save up for a while... saving money will not stimulate the economy.
My boss said it best, "Instead of giving the workers a little extra cash, why not give it to my business so that I can hire another worker?"
Seriously, that would 1) lower unemployment, 2) create more revenue for the government via income tax, etc., and 3) stimulate the economy by having more people with some money.

Anyhow, point being the stimulus bill could have been written BETTER if monkeys wrote it.

Let`s

"The damned joke was that a monkey could write that stimulus package it was so damned ridiculous, not that obama is a monkey."

Regardless of the true intent of the cartoon I feel the protesters are in the right. The dialogue only makes sense when you assume that this dead monkey had the responsibility of writing the stimulus package and its a very short leap to the person who actually has that responsibility, Obama. And to be quite honest, I seriously question the intelligence of the artist if he sincerely thought that no one would react this way. So a humble apology isn`t too much to ask for for such an insensitive screw up.

However, I DO feel that they are taking this way too seriously with calling the New York Post racist and demonstrating in front of the building over a small one frame cartoon.

I have seen a lot of works that were borderline, this is over the edge. The people that compared Bush to a chimp were internet sites, not the press. Huge difference. Political cartoons are supposed to be brutally honest, a bloody chimp that wrote the stimulus can only mean one thing. Even if it was calling Barack Obama a chimp, which it wasn`t really, so what? I bet many national leaders have been called chimps by many people. Or worse.

No matter what country you`re from, try this scenario with it`s current leader or, if they`re popular, an unpopular past leader. Couple of people talking are talking politics and one of them says "<Leader`s name> sucks. We`d be better off with a chimp as [President/Prime Minister/Premier/whatever".

I`d be amazed if Gordon Brown hasn`t been likened to some form of lower primate no end of times. In fact, here`s one now:

A reasonably intelligent chimpanzee would have realised that selling half the country`s gold stocks when gold was at a record low was not a good choice, especially not after announcing the sale in advance as an auction, thus driving the price down even more.

You know what, It`s one person`s opinion, not mine. It doesn`t affect me, and it doesn`t perpetuate hate or blatant racism. If you didn`t already know why the cartoon was racist when you saw it, you wouldn`t be able to derive the racism (the cartoon wouldn`t make much sense).

I saw a dead chimp, shot because he wrote the stimulus bill.
I thought maybe it was because it threatened the president, maybe it was because of animal cruelty, or maybe some people really like Obama, and a chimpanzee is not an animal they approve of for comparison purposes...

I did not see the racism until I remembered the term "porch monkey" from Clerks 2, and made a very slight connection.

Al Sharpton is self-serving. He no longer stands for change regarding Civil Rights or United States race relations. He makes a living by the perpetuation of racial tensions. If there were to be an improvement he would lose his income and position of power. He has vested interested in ensuring racial improvements are not made.

Secondly, he sees the world through the lens` of the 1960s. He sees racial offenses (or creates them) when there are none to be had. I am all for an open and honest discussion for the improvement of race relations in America. But, Al Sharpton is not the man to lead that discussion.

This is the work of Sharpton, that embicile with too much time on his hands.

The drawing is nothing more than political satire that was connecting the chimp who was recently stabbed and then shot to death, and Obama`s state of affairs regarding the stimulous package. Any CHIMP with a brain can see it. Those without a brain were participating in that ridiculous protest. This isn`t racism, it`s pure ignorance at it`s worst. The blind leading the blind.

Sharpton jumps on any "cause" he can make money from. This is a non-issue, so let`s try to move it along.

PrimetimeKin, Sorry, my bad. I`m lost on the sarcasm quotient. With so little posted comments and following the flow -plus your lack of articulation- well... what else had I to go by? Hello Pot. I`m Kettle.

Bored2Run,

If only we had some kind of educational system that we could attend free of charge. This could provide us with such basic knowledge that when someone makes a snarky remark regarding it we could easily discern it to be sarcasm. That would be awesome.

JarvisKnot: A teenager you are. But yeah, hey LOL keep calling me oblivious. Tell me that after you`ve lost your virginity, paid your own bills, married, had kids, owned property, paid taxes and lived as an adult. K? Thanks

"PrimetimeKin, same goes for you my neighbor: U.S. Constitution. First amendment. Don`t just read it, do your best to understand what it means. We have the right of speech, protest and assembly."

Are you serious?
I wasn`t going to make fun of you but now you`re o for 2.

When medi posted that he was being sarcastic saying that the NY Post is protected by the first amendment.

Then I sarcastically replied that the protesters are protected by the first amendment.

Bored2Run, same goes for you my neighbor:I-am-bored comments. Don`t just read it, do your best to understand what it means. We have the right to make fun of you

I agree with screwdriver. Notice the first sign you see: Racist AND ANTI-LABOR. This has nothing to do with racism. This is about control.

it will all blow over soon, but i really dont think this was intended to be racist, i dont think the cartoonist was referring to obama in that cartoon. people just need somthing to argue about.
p.s. obama does kinda look like a monkey.

Sharpton is an opportunist at best. Racially offensive? Hardly. People want equality yet they persist in separating themselves by continuing to point fingers on such minor and assumed infractions. We need to laugh at ourselves and allow others the same. After that we can tackle the real issues instead of garbage like this.
