It can usually only heard by people under 25 and used as a deterrent to keep teens from loitering.

man i`ve totally noticed that sh*t before. i just thought it was the incessant buzz of lifeless drones buying hunks of plastic, ie customers. didnt stop me from stealing a bunch of crap from the mall, target, and walmart. that is sad though, that teenagers loiter at freakin places like that. get a life.

This is a known fact though. Almost every store does this except for Walmart. Listen closely in Target next time.

I did a science fair project on this, and I found that people over the age of 21 could not hear over the frequency of 17 kHz. This is only a 16 kHz sine, but 25 sounds about right.

I haven`t read all these comments, but am I the only one who can`t hear it? Kinda funny cause I`m 20 years old. My roommates can hear it, I sent the link to some friends and all of them can hear it... I can`t. Hm. Weird...

I`m 14 and deaf in my right ear, and this is part of a test to see how many decibals of hearing you have lost. The beeps get shorter or longer and then higher or lower....it`s really annoying and hurts after sitting in a booth for fifteen minutes just listening to beeps.

No problem hearing it at 26...and I barely have my speakers turned on.

This is more a matter of damage to the ears than age. I grew up (until the age of 9) without loud music or even a freak`n TV in my home. I`m a good number of years behind on destroying my hearing, lol.

It doesn`t bug you at first, but it actually makes me cringe after a moment. Worse than that, it echos in my head, so I hear it for another 2-3 minutes every so often.

Technology at it`s most refined: "...used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops."

Tip to the teens: Bring headphones next time you loiter? Hell, I think the ambient noises of the "mall/shop" would drown this out unless you like to walk up to people with a speaker and say "HEY, DOES THIS BUG YOU?!"

Too much rock `n` roll for me. I recorded it, though, and played it back at half speed, and I could hear it then. It was pretty annoying even an octave lower. Anyway, it appears to be a pretty f`ed up wave form. Here`s what it looks like.

The ringtones people have of these super high-pitched noises are probably the most annoying things ever. Yes, the teacher can`t hear you, but your classmates can, and they all think you`re a douchebag.

I can`t hear it, actually. If I turn the speakers up really loud, all I hear is like a sound like someone plucked a guitar string, and even then it`s super soft.

But then again, I have a hearing problem, though a small one, and I can`t hear high pitched noises.

HAHA, I thought I was the only one. Everyone I`ve asked said I was crazy. But I`ve stopped hearing it since most of the TVS have gone to flat screens. Only happened with the tube TVs. Was kind of cool asking people what they were watching from another room when the TV was muted.

@29, heard it. Starting it then listening to it, it`s like taking a deep breath and holding it in for a while. And when it stops, it`s like letting go of that breath. But it all happens physically in your head, like your brain sets itself free of something heavy when the sounds stops. Interesting...

I used to live in a town that would put this on the tornado sirens after 11 PM to keep teenagers from vandalizing.

I replied:
This is retarded because:
1. Your idiot townspeople will get a false sense of security and leave their doors unlocked.
2. Vandals will use earplugs.
3. I lived by a siren, and couldn`t sleep at night.

Yes, I live in KCMO now, because small towns suck like that.

Even worst, some idiot in my neighbourhood thought it was a bright idea to put this crrrraaappp(!!) in the parking lot near my building and I can hear it all day and night when she`s home. The worst thing though is,I`m pretty sure she also has a car-alarm,so getting near it with a bat and beating it to death is not a option. Can you imagine that high pitched noise all day,all night. Iheard it just fine and I`m 38. Does that mean I have super hearing?

Sometimes I can`t hear my wife talking to me and we`ve been married for 10 years. Weird.

I`m 27 and I heard it. Well, to be honest, I didn`t hear much of anything... just a faint buzz, but it sent an annoying sensation into my head. To test if it was psychosomatic, my friend played it when I wasn`t expecting and I immediately heard/felt it.

My mom couldn`t hear it. I played it and started cringing while she looked at me funny and told me to stop faking. She`s 40, so I suppose certain ages can`t hear it. And kids play it at school all the time, but the teachers usually can`t hear it.

I`m 30 as well and was able to hear it, but the longer it went the fainter it got, to the point by the end of the track I could no longer hear it.

They use this in the `mall` in my town. I used to able to hear it but I thought I couldn`t any more. I got really upset as I thought I was losing frequencies earlier than other people, which would mean my job as a producer wouldn`t last long. Glad to know I can still hear it!

I`m 30 and I can hear it. Mind you, I am slightly deaf for lower frequency notes which is probably why. I dunno how many other 30 year olds can hear it.

I really don`t get the point to this. The fact only a young person can hear this is BS to say the least. It`s more like anyone with no hi range hearing loss will hear it and anyone who has had any hearing loss may miss out on the horror of being able to hear it...

I can hear it, it`s also used as a ring-tone so kids can know that someone is calling them in class and the teacher wont know.
I like doing it to annoy people though.

Yeah I heard it. My parents heard it as well and they`re both a little over 40. If you`re hearing isn`t damaged you should be able to hear it.
They`ve put up one of those boxes that makes this sound at the grocery store as well and they refuse to turn it off even when there`s kids hanging around there. Very annoying, because they`ve got no reason to do that at all, and I do my groceries there.
