Yeah I heard it. My parents heard it as well and they`re both a little over 40. If you`re hearing isn`t damaged you should be able to hear it.
They`ve put up one of those boxes that makes this sound at the grocery store as well and they refuse to turn it off even when there`s kids hanging around there. Very annoying, because they`ve got no reason to do that at all, and I do my groceries there.

I really don`t get the point to this. The fact only a young person can hear this is BS to say the least. It`s more like anyone with no hi range hearing loss will hear it and anyone who has had any hearing loss may miss out on the horror of being able to hear it...

They use this in the `mall` in my town. I used to able to hear it but I thought I couldn`t any more. I got really upset as I thought I was losing frequencies earlier than other people, which would mean my job as a producer wouldn`t last long. Glad to know I can still hear it!

We`ve got this "craze" at school at the moment. It`s were everyone who has this sound on their phone plays it in the middle of assembly. It`s funny. We can all hear it of course, but the teachers can`t. So when people start randomly laughing in assembley, the teachers are like:
"WTF?! Stop laughing you vile beasts! I comand you!"

Even worst, some idiot in my neighbourhood thought it was a bright idea to put this crrrraaappp(!!) in the parking lot near my building and I can hear it all day and night when she`s home. The worst thing though is,I`m pretty sure she also has a car-alarm,so getting near it with a bat and beating it to death is not a option. Can you imagine that high pitched noise all day,all night. Gawd,I wished her a noisy, squeeky death many time

I used to live in a town that would put this on the tornado sirens after 11 PM to keep teenagers from vandalizing.

    I replied:
    This is retarded because:
    1. Your idiot townspeople will get a false sense of security and leave their doors unlocked.
    2. Vandals will use earplugs.
    3. I lived by a siren, and couldn`t sleep at night.

Yes, I live in KCMO now, because small towns suck like that.

@29, heard it. Starting it then listening to it, it`s like taking a deep breath and holding it in for a while. And when it stops, it`s like letting go of that breath. But it all happens physically in your head, like your brain sets itself free of something heavy when the sounds stops. Interesting...

i have the perfect solution for those teenage deterrants...high power neodymium magnet, it`ll definately mess up the speaker of whatever is playing that crap.

and it was pretty fun playing that as loud as i can to see if my parents could hear it...they didnt. cats did.

that`s similar to the sound I hear whenever I walk into a house and there is a tv on, especially one that is in another room or if the sound is off. I`ve heard a few other people say they can hear it, but when I was in high school when I came home I would always hear that noise because my dad would leave the tv in his room on.

HAHA, I thought I was the only one. Everyone I`ve asked said I was crazy. But I`ve stopped hearing it since most of the TVS have gone to flat screens. Only happened with the tube TVs. Was kind of cool asking people what they were watching from another room when the TV was muted.

And yup, I heard it. But that`s kind of unfair using it in malls. I`m in my 20`s and not a "loitering teen", so they would essentially be pissing off a legitimate customer.

I can`t hear it, actually. If I turn the speakers up really loud, all I hear is like a sound like someone plucked a guitar string, and even then it`s super soft.

But then again, I have a hearing problem, though a small one, and I can`t hear high pitched noises.

It doesn`t bug you at first, but it actually makes me cringe after a moment. Worse than that, it echos in my head, so I hear it for another 2-3 minutes every so often.

Technology at it`s most refined: "...used as a deterrent device to keep teenagers from loitering in malls and shops."

Tip to the teens: Bring headphones next time you loiter? Hell, I think the ambient noises of the "mall/shop" would drown this out unless you like to walk up to people with a speaker and say "HEY, DOES THIS BUG YOU?!"

No problem hearing it at 26...and I barely have my speakers turned on.

This is more a matter of damage to the ears than age. I grew up (until the age of 9) without loud music or even a freak`n TV in my home. I`m a good number of years behind on destroying my hearing, lol.

I`m 14 and deaf in my right ear, and this is part of a test to see how many decibals of hearing you have lost. The beeps get shorter or longer and then higher or lower....it`s really annoying and hurts after sitting in a booth for fifteen minutes just listening to beeps.
