NY Post Is In Hot Water Over This Comic [Pic]

The artist says it"s commentary over the recent chimp mauling and the stimulus package, not Obama. What do you think?

Obama is the President. "Monkey" is a well known racial slur for someone of African descent. A picture of a monkey getting shot shortly after the stimulus bill takes place is printed in the NY Post. You don`t have to be a genius to connect them all together.

No you see what you are conditioned to see first. If you spend all your time looking for racism that is what you will see, if you spend your time listen to Al S. you will likely assume his take on it is correct. Many many others looked at it read the text and took it to refer to a group of monkey pounding on typewriters, congress.

Look at the TEXT. "Someone else to WRITE the stimulus bill." Obama did not write it so it is OBVIOUS that the cartoonist was talking about congress.

Could possibly be comparing congress to a bunch of monkeys, but they deserve it if they didn`t realise how people would act over it.

Becasue, dleifrag19, they were insulting his intelligence, not calling him a deragatory name.

Okay lets see who is racist here? From your point of view. When Bush was called a monkey it was about his intelligence, when Obama is it`s being used as a racial slur. Does this not tell you something. You people create racism.

Okay, how is that racist fojos? By racially insensitive I mean that the author should have considered ALL points of view before making his comic. "Monkey" is a well known racist slur. He should have considered that.

The First Amendment prevents the Federal Government (and State/Local governments through the adoption of the 14th Amendment) from prosecuting or otherwise penalizing citizens for most types of speech. The type of speech represented in this cartoon is a form of political speech which is generally afforded the most (although not absolute) protection under the First Amendment. So there is no doubt that this cartoonist and this newspaper had the "right" to publish this cartoon. But the First Amendment protects neither the cartoonist nor the newspaper from retribution in the form of public protest, boycotts, public condemnation, etc. The Government cannot throw people in jail over this, but individual citizens and private groups have every right to condemn this cartoon and the publishers.

Evilcupcake fails.

The first amendment was supposed to protect people`s opinions from their government. The right to protest for example is freedom of speech.

Cartoons like this are a side effect of freedom of speech. Like anal leakage.

The fact that this cartoon offends people makes me happy, it means the first amendment is working!

the first amendment guarantees your right to be offended, it does not guarantee your right to not be offended.

I hope to hell the NY Post doesn`t apologize.

I`m not sure how this cartoon reflects solely on black people, if it reflected on anyone at all. We`re all primates, so it would be more accurate to consider the chimpanzee a `brother` as opposed to a black man.

I think the joke was that only a monkey is dumb enough to write this bill, it wasn`t a racist joke or they would have never printed it. Also, like what was said before both are current events and there lies the obvious tie.

Anyhow, I laughed upon reading it. Hell, a billion here and a billion here starts to add up.

Look at the cartoon. When you follow the logical progression in a joke or comic, you have to wonder why the correlation of monkey slaying and stimulus bill exists. The only connection I can see is that they are both contemporary events. Aside from that, why would the punch line of the joke have anything to do with economy, when looking at a dead monkey, and asking who will write the next vital government document? The answer is the artist knew that it was subversive and though his motives might not have been based in racism, he just made something that should not have been made.

In the first place, nobody believes Obama wrote the stimulus bill. It was written by congressional staffers who basically scoured their hard drives for every pork barrel spending bill they couldn`t get past for the last 28 years, and then pasted then all together into a trillion-dollar clusterphuk. So, if Obama didn`t write the bill, what`s his connection to this cartoon? If you want to know who the REAL racists are, look at the ones who are screaming the loudest about it. THEY are the ones who looked at a chimp and saw a black man.

it could be taken 3 ways in my opinion

a) that the stimulus package was written using the mindset of a monkey (as in it`s poorly written [nobody ever thought of this one?])

b) chimp-mauling incident

c) i had one but i forgot it.

As a Black person and someone studying media relations/communications, I think the artist really did mean this to pertain to the chimp mauling incident and *did not* intend for this to be racist. I would take it as racist if the chimp were wearing a suit and tie as that`s an automatic allusion to the President (or just plain cute depending on who you ask).

It was just bad-timing and a bit of ignorance on his part not to use a little foresight to see how else this cartoon could`ve been taken (granted Obama was doing a lot of work attempting to stimulate the economy this week and the chimp mauling incident happened at the same time) as calling a Black person a "chimp" or "monkey" is an ethnic slur since many racists believe that Blacks are "less evolved".

I didn`t find it funny because newspaper cartoons are NEVER funny except to people who wear monicles; I guess. Hopefully he learned a lesson from this experience but I`m sure he didn`t.LOL.

firstly, it says "WRITE" the bills, Obama didn`t write the bill, just sign. if it said, "SIGN" then you could START to question, but as others have pointed out...bush was called a monkey/ape almost his entire stint in office, plus previous presidents were referred to as monkeys, by calling it racist you are A) condoning racism, B) grasping for reasons to be upset, or C) an idiot.

here`s the biggest question...if this cartoon was drawn by a black guy, is it still racist?

As for hurling insults ChronicJ, anyone can do that as long as it doesn`t cross the line of `sustained personal attack`. Without question, this is a clearly racist cartoon that directly references Obama. The cartoonist, Newscorp, Rupert Murdock are all spineless cowards who will not stand behind thier own policies of bigotry and hate towards non-whites. FOX sanitizes the transcripts of shows where bigot hosts like Bill O`Reily say something patently false, clearly ignorant and offensive when they are called out by media watchdogs. Newscorp and all it`s subsidiaries are not journalistic in any way. They have no integrity and should be considered tabloid trash.

I don`t know the guy, he could have very easily meant it in a very racist way for all we know, and is just lying to cover it up, but his excuse does make full sense.

He is saying that he doesn`t think too highly of the stimulus package (i.e. that it must have been written by an idiot\monkey) (ever heard the expression "so easy a monkey could do it?") and the comic depicts the event where that chimp was shot.

But, like I said, I don`t know the guy, that could just be his cover for actual racism, lol.

I think one look at the comic gives you a pretty damn good idea at what the author was aiming for.

"Cops killed a monkey recently. The Stimulus Bill was written by somebody with the intelligence of a monkey. 2+2. Ha ha."

I really, REALLY can`t stand how people walk on egg shells around racist subjects.

I think I hear more people unnecessarily jump down people`s throats for things that have the slightest hint of possibly being racist than people who walk around actually filled with hate and spewing hateful things from their mouths (ACTUAL racism).

This is not what MLK worked so hard and ultimately died for 40 years ago. Certain African Americans should be ashamed of themselves for the way they handle racist matters today.

i think, if the artist were trying to actually make a joke concerning both the stimulus package and the mauling, the joke runs too deep to make the cartoon not offensive.

Haha, whoops!
Reminds me of http://sockpoliticians.com/ a while back. Regardless of what he meant, it`s not a good idea. Surely this must have been checked beforehand?!

Of course it`s commentary on Obama. How could it not be?
In any case this is in poor taste all around.

Ah I heard about this. I doub`t the artist is intending it to be racist. But I think he and the editors were dumb to not realise it would be taken us such. Unless they knew and ignored it because its extra publicity!! They know better than any that all press is good press!

Link: NY Post Is In Hot Water Over This Comic [Pic] [Rate Link] - The artist says it`s commentary over the recent chimp mauling and the stimulus package, not Obama. What do you think?
