How`s Your News? Exploitative Or Sincere?

MTV is airing a new news program, hosted by mentally disabled people. Is it exploitation or is it a sincere show?

It`s hard to say whether it`s exploitive or not. I suppose it would depend on whoever is viewing it. Most would (hopefully) see it as just a news show, while, sadly, others would make fun of them. But they seem like they`re having fun, so I don`t think *they* mind.

And that poor guy at 6:10 when the guy says he`s there for murder, the kid has the most scared look on his face.

Extremely exploitive! It is for us, the public audience;to laugh at. However, if they enjoy it then no-harm no-foul right?

Exploitative, maybe. But, like firefliet said, it`s MTV, what more can you expect? All things aside, they seem to be having fun doing it, so what is the problem?

Seeing as half the time I had to remind myself that they were mentally challenged, I don`t see the problem.

The real problem does actually come from maintaining the opinion that they`re different. All in all, they do the same as everyone else: they do the best they can, and that sets them equal to everyone.

The featured developmentally disabled players are having the fun. They are not being made fun of. So the show is A-Ok from the clips I saw. It`s entertaining to see them enjoy themselves and to feel accepted and be able to share their joy of living with the general public.
It could derail though if the players lose their sense of humor and the directors out of desparation start using their disabilites as the focus to get a cheap laugh. I don`t think that will happen though. Fun show. Light entertainment.

They might be having fun, and that would be all that matters.

But still, its MTV. How could they be doing anything -but- exploit, exploit, exploit?

Duuuude, that`s so cute! I don`t think they are being exploited because no one is making fun of them. They are just having fun doing something that they love. In all likelihood, they don`t see themselves as being exploited, they are just enjoying the experience and if someone told them that they couldn`t do this because they run the risk of being laughed at, well, don`t you think that would disappoint them? Who are we to make this decision for them? They seem capable enough to do it and besides, I like their energy. I think they should share it with the world.

I don`t know if this is supposed to be inspirational because they have disabilities and are out there doing what they, I guess, love. Or if I should shake my head in shame because it seems so wrong. In any case, I won`t be tuning in.

"People saying that they have to be protected and have all their decisions made for them because they can`t think for themselves is the most insulting."

I disagree also. None of us are allowed to have complete freedom of decisions. However these people are venerable to being laughed at which is exactly why they need guidance. Would you think it was fair to put someone who is mentally handicapped in a freak show to be laughed at, even if they enjoyed it? I don`t think you would and the reason for that is that it would teach the ignorant members of the public that it is acceptable to laugh at peoples disabilities.

"I bet whoever here is freaking out is not close with someone with downs or another form of a mental disability. Relax everyone, it was done in good taste and they were enjoying themselves."

I don`t think thats the point. No one is doubting that these people are enjoying it. However this looks to me as if it is simply a case of having disabled people try to report the news for comedic value. I personally saw this in terms of taking the p*ss out of the presenters behavior which I don`t think is on.

It is teaching people to laugh at the mental handicapped when we should blatantly be laughing with them.

Slmmhmmr161 I have no idea overall what you were trying to say in that comment but I was talking about these particular people because they are all high functioning, not all people with a mental handicap are though, I know that.

People saying that they have to be protected and have all their decisions made for them because they can`t think for themselves is the most insulting.

"Starrstreet", no, they`re not all able to think and act for themselves. Its Trey Parker and Matt Stone. As soon as some yuppie biblethumping soccermoms catch wind of it, it`ll get cancelled.

Geez guys, these people can still think for themselves - they want to do this.

I bet whoever here is freaking out is not close with someone with downs or another form of a mental disability. Relax everyone, it was done in good taste and they were enjoying themselves.

This could`ve been done bad but it wasn`t. All in good fun.

I`d have to see how they go about doing the show when it`s introduced to say whether it`s exploitative or not. The fact that it`s produced by the makers of South Park make me think that it probably will be, which is a shame. In a way, I think the idea of this show is a good thing, because it helps get out that people who have a disability aren`t really as handicapped as a lot of people think; they can still carry on conversations and play sports and music and have a good time. They`re not abnormal, they just have some hindrances. But in another way I think this might be a bad idea because we all know that the world isn`t full of nice, understanding people.

LOL. 2:25 the guy with down syndrome looks at the N.O. bird girl with a look on his face that just screams "girl, YOU are dratting retarded..."

In a way this is actually a good thing. I work with older adults who have various disabilities, and people need more exposure to the fact that just because people look or behave in a way that is not considered to be "normal", doesn`t mean that that individual doesn`t have hopes/dreams/aspirations or even a desire to have fun. I just hate the fact that this is MTV taking advantage of those folks, in order to be "edgy".

"Yes, I did just relate porn actresses to the mentally handicapped"

This comparision`s pretty accurate if you`ve ever listened to a porn actress talk. I think people should sue MTV for false advertising where`s the music?

I must be getting old, as something like this has already been done before. To revamp such an idea (no, I don`t mean this is an old link, just an old idea) is exploitation of a whole other sort.

Now I rather wish I could remember the name of the old show. Handicapped news or somethin`...

To be honest, I don`t feel like they are being exploited. I think this is done in as "classy" a manner as Mtv is capable of... which isn`t saying much, but I still somewhat approve of this show.

If it weren`t from MTV I`d have said that at least they`re having a good time.

But it`s from MTV so... exploitative.

Definitely exploitation. This just encourages more people to laugh at the mentally handicapped. Whats next, "mentals do the funniest things?". It`s just not right.

MTV is exploitative?

NO...

I would never have guessed. I thought it was perfectly normal to pay jackasses to put their bodies in harm`s way for the sake of a cheap laugh.

If women can do porn and "degrade themselves" then the mentally handicapped should be able to be televised and "exploit themselves".

Yes, I did just relate porn actresses to the mentally handicapped.

Now where am I going and why am I in this hand basket?

when the one guy came out of the bus with the afro and the glasses... did anyone else think of flava flav? because i laughed my arse off. my mom used to teach special ed, and i gotta say... this reminds me of when i was young and she`d take me into work with her because she couldn`t find a babysitter or something.

There`s going to be a split perspective on this. (As with most things). However I jsut don`t think it seems right. It feels as if people are jsut going to laugh and poke more fun at disabled people. It`s quite disgusting in that outlook. However I suppose that there are obvious perspectives.

Unfortunatly this loooks like its definatly supposed to make people laugh. On the brighter side, these people looks like they are having more fun than they have ever had in their lives whether they know they could be getting laughed at or not.

MTV exploits everyone; however, until I see a season of the show and how it`s pitched, I won`t really be able to tell if they`re making fun of them or genuinely broadcasting this show. (Does mtv do anything genuinely?)

I think it`s a brilliant idea. People with disabilities and disadvantages deserve opportunities like this. It helps inspire others with disabilities and gives insight to those without.

This coming from the brain of a Special Education major.

Of course it`s exploitative. It`s television. That said, I think it`s less exploitative than most reality television and game shows. I don`t know anything about the show, but they looked like they were having fun, and that means more to me than any kind of PC bullpoo.

I didn`t watch the whole video because it would only show the frame at every other second or two... or five. Not quite sure what to think of it, no flags really popped up in my head while I was "watching" it, though.
However one of the interviewers looked a lot like that guy from... *looks him up* Michael Cera! (Maybe not to you, but he reminded me of him)

i think that......these people seem to be taking advantage of the fact that we have an accepting society. Exploitative or not they seem to enjoy doing it. The way i see it we could learn from them they seem to WANT to do this whether MTV is getting their jollies or not. so kudos to MTV for giving oppurtunities not normally given and kudos hows ur news for steping out and having fun with it.

And besides i have never seen a news station with someone who has down syndrome. know why?
because they are afraid it would look bad on them because not everyone who`s broadcasting is beautiful.

They`re not being exploited more then you and me.

If they want to do it and people want to watch it I really dont see what`s the problem. It will probably get old really fast so dont worry too much. I have had a firend with mental disability when I was younger and I know how it`s like... it`s hard for them to be original.

do the people who watch this show go "Wow, these people make me reevaluate how I stereotype people with disabilities?"

or do they say

"These guys look different and sound different, I shall laugh at them and stay in my narrow mindset." ? I think the latter. Therefore MTV sucks.
