This is what happens when it"s -20 degrees in Minnesota. Fill a squirt bottle full of boiling hot water and try it...

Oh well, it kept me amused for a few seconds.

It`s much funner to throw up a big glass of hot water up in -40 temps or even see your spit freeze before it hits the ground.

I think she was just showing that water can go from boiling point to freezing in no time. Geez people find some fun in the situation instead getting all "lolz zomg water into icez!"

it was -52 degrees Celcius the other day where i live. it was the coldest city on earth that day. so -20 F is nothing. PS, if you take a pot of boiling water and throw it off a balcony of a 3rd (or so) story building, it`ll turn to snow. much more dramatic

it has nothing to do with chemical reactions, it all has to do with the thermal coupling between the water and the air. More surface area means that the water will get to the temperature of the air faster.

The reason this works is that the squirt bottle is set up to spray a fine mist. This turns the continuous mass of water in the bottle into a bunch of tiny droplets, which have a lot more surface area per unit mass. This means that they reach the ambient temperature much faster, whereupon they freeze as the droplets try to resist going below 0 C.

slepre, to answer your question, it`d take longer to freeze than a cup of hot water. Don`t ask me why, something to do with hydrogen bonding and the way it cools etc i think, but im not entirely sure. But i think it would, i heard it from somewhere

Anyone with better knowledge??? :)

drat that, were i live it was effing -49`C(i have no clue for what it would be in F`) but if you were to do that, it still would just be STEAM. the water will NOT freeze instantly. trust me i have tried it, -20 is NOTHING.

"what is cool about it? hot water makes steam.... and.......... stupid yank"

That wasn`t steam you were seeing. The hot water was freezing instantly into what would amount to a fine snow. When you subject extremely hot water to extreme colds you get a chemical reaction that causes rapid cooling. The larger the temperature gap the more rapid the cooling. When the temperature difference is great enough, like in this case, the water will freeze instantly.

Maybe next time you should do a little research or pay more attention to the video before you start handing out the verbal bashing.

-20F *facepalm*
this video should be called "What happens when you spray hot water outside in winter" not the cold! it isn`t even cold at all!
-20F = -28C
the temperature a few days ago where i live was...
-50C = -58F
schools in my area don`t close till then.
schools closing at -23F(-30C) is absurd.

it`s only cold when you take off your gloves and your hands generate steam in the air. it`s really sweet when it does that.

Minnesota temperatures FTW. I live in MN and let me tell you the last couple of days have been brutal. We did get a day off of school yesterday tho... to Naz14 I`ve tried it with a cup of water. We chucked it really high in the air and it froze before it hit the ground, so that was pretty cool.
