The Curious Case of Forrest Gump

Benjamin Button was great. You also might have enjoyed it 15 years ago when they called it Forrest Gump.

I would just like to point out that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button was a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the 1920`s, so no... the film was not a rip-off of Gump.

Although they share similar plots, there are two resounding differences. The obvious being that Benjamin is born OLD. "I was born under unusual circumstances." The other being that his story is told in a way that is perfectly normal, which contrasts his abnormal life; which I am sure, is the point.

Gump is spiced up with the meeting of many famous individuals, making his life seem thrilling.

I really adore both movies, and I do see a lot of similarities, but that does not make either one a rip off of the other.

If you have not seen TCCOBB yet, I suggest you do. It was one of my movie highlights of 2008.

I love both movies, but seriously, before somenne goes slamming a film or novel, at least ATTEMPT to know what you are talking about.

Forrest Gump isn`t a rip off of Benjamin Button. Eric Roth purposely combined the plot of the short story with the narrative elements of the film. Self-plagiarism, i guess, but I don`t see why he shouldn`t have a right to that.
Another interesting similarity: Forrest Gump uses a feather as a metaphor to its themes. Benjamin Button uses a similar object for its purpose: a hummingbird.

Rotten tomatoes is a great site...and both movies suck..

I wonder if we`ll ever have a comment board that doesn`t turn into a way-too-intense serious discussion of the lighthearted subject matter.

No offense frankii, but did you even READ what greenday said?
"Benjamin Button was a BOOK by F. Scott Fitzgerald before it was a movie--way before. Forrest Gump as a ripoff--absolutely possible. Go to the library. Check it out."

WTF are books?

True greenday...very true.

But still--funny as hell. Somebody was thinking..."Hey, people loved Forrest Gump. And he wasn`t even based on a classic novel. Quick--dig up that F. Scott dude!"

Heh...kidding, of course. I prefer reading to most movies any day.

greenday551, how can Forrest Gump be a rip off of Benjamin Button? Forrest was out first and therefore cannot have copied.

You do realize that The curious case of benjamin button was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. So if anything Forrest Gump is a rip off of Benjamin Button

Most movies and books have the same plots actually. Most of them follow certain formulas, so people basically go and see the same movies over and over.

You could draw similarities like that between so many films, that`s just due to fairly archetypal characters and narratives. `The Curious Case of Benjamin Button` is a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald anyway.

these movies were not alike at all... this guy shows bubba a pretty significant character in Forrest Gump and compares his to a very minor black character in The Curious Case. This was retarded these movies weren`t alike at all. Oh really there was a boat and a sex scene THEY MUST BE THE SAME MOVIE.

Don`t see Benjamin Button. The ending will leave you feeling miserable. There`s no dying together scene, no long last goodbye, no nothing. Just an empty feeling where your heart used to be.
