Great, now more games are going to be restricted and held back all because of one idiot.
The way the media jump on games as a bandwagon of evil annoys me as well. Im going to stop before i start ranting.

"He had no idea that if he killed his parents, they would be dead forever."

Complete bullpoo. The kid is 17 years old. I`m sure he has seen a movie where someone gets shot and dies. And it`s stupid of the father to forgive him and try and bring him home like nothing ever happened. How is the kid gonna learn?

Someone needs to slap that judge in the face. You can`t have someone that ignorant have other people`s lives in his hands.

The kid a an ignorant piece of poo and his parents made him that way. End of story.

whether it`s a game or a drug it`s your choice to stop at some point and whatever events that follow from your neglect to quit are you own fault. no drunk driver purposely crashes into another car, but one can`t help but to wreck in that state of mind. no mercy for druggies or drunks, so why gamers?

What the hell is that "expert" talking about? Hold on to your faces, people, for it`s about to get rocked off. The real, hidden reason people play videogames for hours on end is simple: it`s fun. The same reason you play sports for hours, do hobbies, cook, etc. It`s fun. Although stupid, expendable people may get hooked on them because their droll lives are meaningless, but that is absolutely no excuse to say "I didn`t know they would die." He`s guilty.

    @s0rd3dvis1on

Physical drugs are different than addictive activities. poo like gambling and video games are addictive because they are fun and the brain likes fun. Drugs Physically re-arrange your brain so that you have to have that drug again.

Generally, an intelligent person who has been taught to understand reason, isn`t gonna have a problem with gambling or video games.

I don`t really know what I think on this. I hate this culture of blame, where nobody is responsible for their actions because of video games/movies/music. It should never be used as an excuse, if youre not the kind of person likely to kill I dont see how a game can lead you to it.

I think this kid`s lawyers should be pretty ashamed of themselves, although maybe he had gone a bit loopy from it, temporary insanity or whatever - maybe.

Funny when a white person murders someone because of the affects of a video game the judge cannot decide whether to sentence them, when a minority under the same circumstances the judges sentences them to either life in prison without the possibility of parole or they receive the death penalty.

The criminal justice system in the United States is unfair. African-Americans are 10 times more likely to be imprisoned for drug offenses than white people in the United States. In addition, the institute noted that federal mandatory minimum sentencing rules hit blacks harder, with the same jail term being given out for possessing five grams of crack (which is disproportionately used by blacks) as 500 grams of cocaine (disproportionately used by whites).

I`m just saying, Would an intelligent human being in a normal mental state kill their parents not knowing the consequences of their actions merely because they participate vigorously in playing a videogame that includes violence?
Also...When in Halo 3 did Master Chief kill his parents without consequence?

Yeah, because if it were not for video games, peoples sense of reality would not "warped"?? OK... the only drater with a warped sense of reality is that judge.

When are we going to stop blaming other people for our own mistakes? That kid knew exactly what he was doing at all times. I think there is more to this story we don`t know. Like maybe he had some crappy parents who didn`t know what real good sense and discipline when it comes to parenting is.

Okay, this kid is 17, not 7. He understands the concept of death. Even mentally handicapped 17 year olds understand death. This was completely premeditated. Saying close your eyes I`ve got a surprise. Putting the gun in dad`s hand to make it look like a murder suicide. Telling his sister who came by just after the shooting that she couldn`t come in because his parents had a fight..
This kid knew exactly what he was doing. He just sucks at life.
&& as far as the M rating.. Nobody gives a poo about it, but still.. His father was a preacher?
He of all people should have payed attention to it. Can`t blame the games, it`s ludicrous to even try. I`m addicted to nicotine, but if I were underage and my parents took away my stogies, I wouldn`t drating kill them! I`d find a way to get more smokes. This case is ridiculous, throw the book at him.

The second they took his game away, he didn`t know how to cope with being told no, so he did what he thought was the correct response. This kid knew what he was doing when he killed them, and he damn well knew how to set it up as murder suicide. Stop blaming games for the actions of retarded teens.

He isn`t 7, he`s a 17yr old! Yes when young, I too have done some stupid crap, BUT, knowingly going into the living room, close your eyes I have a surprise, is Pre-meditated no matter how many ways you tell it.. He`s a human with pistons that don`t all fire right in his brain, PERIOD! and what he did was MURDER, PERIOD!! If he was 7, and "imitated" something he saw, that would be a different story. concetra, lets make this a racial thing :rolls eyes:

when I spent the night in jail for driving without a license (yes lame reason to spend a night in jail), half of the people in there were white people with possession charges. a handful of them were college kids. its not that the courts are more lenient to whites than blacks, its the statistic that blacks are typically more involved than whites...

the judge couldn`t NOT decide, its not his place to. he will be put through a jury trial in which THEY will decide. his parents are ridiculous, well his dad anyways. If my kid did that, there would be no forgiveness....you teach them life is precious and if they can`t appreciate it, you disown them, or at least not forgive them like the next day...

I think he definitely knew what he was doing. Addicted yes. But people who steal to finance a crack habit are still found guilty of theft all the time. He had the mental capability to appreciate his actions, and I`m glad the judge found him guilty.

Also, apparently from what I heard they had taken away his copy of Halo 3 and hidden the disk in the safest place they could think of: the locked safe where the father kept his 9mm.

Videos games give you the illusion of importance in a world in increasing powerlessness. In a game you are the central actor of an epic drama and everyone else is doing all they can to stop you. In real life, not so much. You are simply an unapreciated cog in a larger social machine and it seems that individual power is being more and more marginalized and there is little control we have. That`s why we love video games.

Umm, I`m pretty sure that kid new his parents would be gone forever after he shot them. I can`t believe they`re actually pushing the blame towards a freaking video game. Obviously he has some big ass anger issues.

    Blame the parents.

The only way this could have happened is if they would have left the video games educate their son since birth.

Another explination, a more logical one, is that the guy was a psycho and he just use video games reference to protect himself.

I sure hope it was not a plot just to make video games look bad.

Father "Honey, I got a good news and a bad news. Good news; we got a plan to force game makers to stop creating violent video games."

    Mother "What`s the bad news?"

Father "We need you dead. We`re going to frame video game violence for your murder by the hands of our son. That`s going to teach them."

    Mother "..."

"The father is a priest. Isnt it odd that quite a lot of criminals and violent people like this are children of priests..."

I call it the PK (preacher`s kid) effect. We grow up in not only a very black and white world, but also a very sheltered one. After a while you get sick of all your sins being forgiven and start rebelling and all that Jesus loves you stuff. Still no reason to kill your parents though, specially not over a lousy video game.

That`s just from my experience as a preacher`s daughter and from having known other kids like me.

What a load of poo. "opiate effect"? I`ve tried both Halo and opium and even on a few occasions Halo on opium and that never led to me killing anything. I have had to stop mixing assasins creed and mushrooms though. I kept getting the urge to go on a 9th century style crusade and capture jerusalem.

He didn`t kill her over Halo. He walked in to the room, shot her and his dad for no reason, and the lawyers are trying to use his addiction to Halo as an excuse so he can plead insanity, which the judge didn`t buy.

That judge is an idiot. The kid didn`t kill his parents because he played video games a lot. Plenty of kids play video games a lot, and have disagreements with their parents about those habits, but you don`t see them walking into a room with a gun.
This kid was obviously very troubled and had very deep issues with his parents, and likely anger issues as well. This is just another case of the media and "concerned adults" trying to make out video games as mind-dulling murderer-makers, when they really have no idea what they`re talking about.

This is pathetic. It is true that video games are an outlet of sorts. But those prone to this type of action would well do ti regardless of the games they play. It would just take a different trigger... a television show, a summer blockbuster movie, or eventual overflow pent up anger.

What a bunch of crap. It was premeditated all the way. He brought in a gun and told his parents to close their eyes, then bam!! He knew what he was doing and should be sent to prison for the rest of his life, just so he can think and "re-play" that sick little game in his head over and over. This is from my neck of the woods... The defense of "insanity by addiction" wasn`t the only defense. They (the defense team) also tried to use the father`s (minister) forgiveness to avoid prevent conviction. Whether he was addicted, forgiven or what, guilty is guilty! I`ve followed this story in the area newspaper and on televised news and the one thing that has been consistent is that there was never any doubt that he had done it. He murdered his mother and tried to murder his father. I highly doubt that if you were to sub a controlled substance for Halo the verdict would have ever been in question.
But it`s okay. His dad forgave him.

I think this is such a sad story. That kids mother is gone forever over basically a tantrum. I do despise how they tend to try and say games have a major involvement in someone doing things like this. Its the same as when they tried to blame music for influencing people to kill others. Its all nonsense, anything at all could have influenced these kids to do such things. Its these particular mentally disturbed children are the problem, not games and not music. I hope the kid never gets out because, (although it may not be the best footage from which to judge) in that video he just didn`t look remorseful at all for killing his own mother.

    "What, like in Switzerland, douuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuche?"

We`re not allowed, we`re ordered to. And there`s a strong movement to get all the guns out of the houses and into an armory. That`s mainly beacause we have one of the world`s highest suicide rates and many of those are commited with one of those guns.

So I still think having guns around is a risk and not having them would save lives. And I don`t believe a game could influence someone that much, they must have had other, more serious problems in that family...

yes, because it is completely improbable that a kid kills someone just for normal reasons like everyone else. The kid murdered someone, the game didn`t. non-nice individuals.

First of all video games arent THAT addicting. Second of all how the hell did he get a gun? and lastly unless that kid is Master Chief, Halo didn`t kill her, he did.

I think that people like this shouldn`t be allowed to play video games. Not all people get addicted to video games and turn violent, this is just a freak incident with one guy who was stupid. Please do not put this on video games, please put it on the guy who is an idiot.

There was probably something wrong with the kid before he played Halo. The judge is obviously no professional on psychiatry and half of what he said was total b.s.

Complete bullpoo. The kid is 17 years old. I`m sure he has seen a movie where someone gets shot and dies. And it`s stupid of the father to forgive him and try and bring him home like nothing ever happened. How is the kid gonna learn?--

He`s probably stupid enough to believe there`s an after-life.

"hypnotic effect of games like halo 3"
What the drat is that supposed to mean? Retards aren`t born from video games, they are already retards before playing it. A lot of people forget that.

im glad they didnt `blame` the game as such, games dont make you do mad things, its just the people, if he was hooked on it playing it 18 hours a day or something then there was already something wrong with him!
but ya know, its the lawers job to do whatever they can to defend a murderer, so they get desperate dont they

maybe being forced to play, locked in a room for days on end would make me go crazy, but still wouldnt be the games fault...

this story makes me very angry. the fact that a teenager would kill his own mother over a video game makes me sick.

I was addicted to halo 3 but then my xbox 360 broke down lol...but I would`ve never gotten that addicted (hopefully). Good thing my parents stopped me from staying up too late. I would`ve never been able to forgive myself if I did that.

The kid looks like a retard... might explain a few things. Might have to start putting intelligence restrictions on games.

It was the fact that they took the game away from him that lead him to killing them, not the fact that Halo 3 taught him to or anything! They could`ve taken away something else he loved and this probably would`ve happened!
