I dont understand.. How about you stop worrying about this cr/ap and just continue living your life. If by the end of your life all you worried about was education, technology, global disasters, and your retirement plan, then what was the point? If you aren`t reasonably happy the whole time what did you spend your life doing?
oh and philosophical bullsh/t aside: i liked how they used a quantity of people for the market audience rather than the percent of people it was available to. Seeing as the population was already "exponential" i`d be more worried if the market audiences for these things WEREN`T achieved way faster than their predecessors. This video sacrificed validity for emotional impact and its disappointing because it started out looking like a great video.

I saw the "shift happens" powerpoint aswell. Its shocking, but it means we can achieve more in a shorter amount of time. In contrast, the number of problems that will arise will follow the same trend.

Who knows, countries might be fighting in cyberspace wars in 100 years? Penetrating the core of their intelligence and locking down their computer systems.

There is no way a computer can exceed the human computational capabilities, because our brain works in a way that is unique and cannot be reached by any technical means. Computing is something that is really hard to explain, really. The numbers we have right now are not enough to satisfy the scientific needs of todays` science. Having a number like 3.1415926535897932384626433832795 isn`t really helpfull when you try to find how long it will take for a wheel to stop spinning, yet computers can find it, but still, it isn`t completely accurate. But if something isn`t perfect, then it is worse than the human equivalent.

I know they cited their source, but still, this is a blatant rip-off of shift happens. Two years later and they didn`t even bother to see if the numbers had changed. Sad, really.

They didn`t say that computers will be "smarter" than humans. They said that processing capabilities will be greater than ours - and that is totally expected.

Sadly, intelligence cannot be created/programmed (at least with our current technology). AI doesn`t count because it`s an algorithm.

That was probably the most interesting video i`ve seen all day haha

Oh;
Percent of English Speaking people per country:

United States: 89.33%
China: 0.77%
India: 10.66%

Fabricated facts FTL.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cou...

----

You took the fact in the wrong direction. By the most english speaking country in the world it meant population. While the United states is 89% the US population is roughly 305,500,00 (rounded down). China`s is 1.3 billion. So taking the numbers into hand.

89% of 305.5 million is 271,895,000 english speaking people.

.77% of 1.3 billion is 10,010,000.

This number is expected to skyrocket in the next decade with english becoming the majority language for world trade.
Besides that wikipedia fact sheet is out of date by 9 years. the data is from 2000.

The facts aren`t false they`re predicted. Stop screaming "FALSE INTRANETZ!!"

The "Computers will be smarter than humans" statement is a total crock.

Computers can perform arithmetic using very little processing power, and some humans may struggle at doing that.

On the other hand, humans can recognize faces, which is extremely complex for a machine to do.

Basically, its apples and oranges. Computers are already better at some things, and probably won`t be completely better for a very long time.

when ice melts, it melts from the inside first, OK? so what happends is that greenland becomes a giant pool, when the walls PHAIL, it will unleash massive amounts of water into the ocean, probably freezing down the golf stream. this means big time ice age for Norway.

"I doubt computers will be smarter than the human brain."

I just hope they don`t become smarter...I`ll be freaked out if they do one day.

"I was hoping it would say something about the fact that Ice displaces the exact same amount of water that it contains, so if the ice caps melted it would have absolutely no effect on the Earth`s water level."

This is why I`m confused that everyone is panicking about the ice caps melting. >_<

sup_dawg444, that may be true for ice that is submerged, but if it isn`t wouldn`t it raise the water level if it melted?

Anyways, awesome video. I love random (or non-random) facts.

"I doubt computers will be smarter than the human brain. If it took the knowledge of the human brain to create it, how can the computer exceed that knowledge. it`s impossible. Interesting video otherwise;"

That`s absolutely terrible logic. Tell that to Kasparov after Deep Blue beat the poo out of him in a top human vs. top computer chess match in the early 2000`s, or to scientists who rely on machines to present incredibly complex mathematical models to them in a fraction of the time they could do it themselves.

Actually it`s 95% of statistics are made up.
That`s an actual statistic, and it`s not made up.

"ii) We do not know what can cause intelligence, so how can you state with certainty that humans cannot build a machine more intelligent than humans? Humans can build machines far superior to humans in many ways - how can you be sure that particular way is impossible? "
Angilion made a good point.

since most will not grasp his post fully:

Summary:
Its not the speed, its the ability.

We can easily build a computer with far more processing power than a human. HOWEVER, the "operating system" that "runs" in our brain would be extremely superior to that of the one on the computer. Our mind has much more potential than that of the computer. The computer runs off numbers and equations at a seemingly impossilbe rate, but thats all it can do, run a bunch of numbers.

I can see where some of you are getting confused, and this cleared it up a little for me as well to be honest.

"What does it mean? Mankind will not be able to sustain an exponential growth and a catastrophic event will wipe out 99.9% of humanity (in 2012 probably). The remnants of mankind will be thrown back to the stoneage and mankind`s previous advancement will become just a myth. This has happened before (Atlantis) and will happen again."

wow you just stated 2 myths in your little "theory".
Atlantis has never existed, and the 2012 thing... just freakin wow.

if you seriously believe in 2012, i have a VERY good argument against it (yet its also for it, hard to explain). However, i refuse to argue on IAB as most mods will consider it spam since it does not contribute in any way.

"a computer cant be made that is smarter than every human on the planet if its the human that is building it."

i) That was not what was claimed.
ii) That cannot be categorically stated as true.

i) They were talking about projected raw processing power of a computer compared with estimated raw processing power of a human brain. Not intelligence - raw processing power. Which doesn`t mean as much as people might think. The main strength of the human brain is its awesome degree of parallelism, not the sum of the processing power of each neuron.

ii) We do not know what can cause intelligence, so how can you state with certainty that humans cannot build a machine more intelligent than humans? Humans can build machines far superior to humans in many ways - how can you be sure that particular way is impossible?

"By 2013, a supercomputer will be built that exceeds the computational capabilities of the human brain."

I`ll ignore the blaring grammatical error there and point out the fact that in order to know something like that, they would have to be able to see into the future. They are stating their own [flawed] predictions as if they are scientific facts.

That "fact" and about 1/2 of the "facts" in that video are total bullpoo. The video is basically speculation/conspiracy theory.

And that thing about learning new information now compared to the 1800`s... How can they measure information? What imaginary unit of measurement did they invent for information?

All it is it propaganda.

The only scary thing in that video is the thing about how the Chinese and Indians are uber-breeding like crazy in order to take over the world.

cool video, and it can`t be that old, they talk about being 2008 so at most its a year old.

What does it mean? Mankind will not be able to sustain an exponential growth and a catastrophic event will wipe out 99.9% of humanity (in 2012 probably). The remnants of mankind will be thrown back to the stoneage and mankind`s previous advancement will become just a myth. This has happened before (Atlantis) and will happen again.

My favourite quote from The Hitchhiker`s Guide to the Galaxy: "There is a theory which states that if anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened."

Would a magnetic flare cause data to be wiped out:
Yes.

A faraday cage does not protect directly against magnetism, it protects against electricity, which can cause magnetism.

Spermicide does not kill children, even though children come from sperm.
Faraday cages do not prevent large levels of magnetism, even though they come from electricity.

Cue arguments like "But I could strangle a kid with a condom". Yes, yes you could, feel free to pass large electromagnets over your computer. Preferably ones from an old fashioned stereo system.

If they had internet 50 years ago, they`d have something like this for that time as well.

Just because we Realize it, doesn`t mean it hasn`t been happening.

Also, I have issues with statistics like this because they`re really narrow.

Variables, anyone?

What if a magnetic flare from the Sun whipes out all data on planet Earth?

Well, then I`m pretty positive that in 2049, there won`t be a computer more powerful than the whole human race for a thousand bucks.

It all means nothing because eventually everything we`ve ever created or accomplished, any record of life as we know or have known it will be dust. Not a trace, nobody will care. That is if there`s even anyone else in the universe that would actually give a crap. Everything ultimately ends. Ha ha now I`ve made you all sad.

It really shows you how much we rely on computers from day to day and how further technological advancements could potentially destroy the need for humans in the socio-economic community.

I knew most of that already.

Esopillar: "Until computers can match the heuristic and reasoning capabilities we can, they won`t top us"

Define "top us"? Computers will never be human, not because they cannot be made to be so, but simply because humans will never see the point in making a computer that can be wrong, which is what a human is.

Humans can estimate/guess/rough it (yay) and be completely off the mark (boo). Why would we have a computer attached to anything important that could do that?

As far as I`m concerned, in that regard, computers already top us in many many many ways.

yeah but it only said about computational power, unfortunately for some of you, we are more than that...like would they have active antibodies or would they need human-generated updated lists now-and-again?

Don`t worry Violet, these sort of facts are pushed in our faces to let us all know how inferior we are.

For those wondering about computers vs humans, here`s a chart someone made.

Not the greatest resolution, but it gets its point across. Also, I think it means "$1000- whatever current rate is".

But until computers can match the heuristic and reasoning capabilities we can, they won`t top us (hell, we shouldn`t make them that advanced until we can put some shades of gray in there, otherwise they might actually pull a Skynet/Matrix on us and decide they don`t need us anymore.

In 5 years, a computer will outmatch a human. In 10, it`ll outmatch a large group of people.

In 40, it`ll outmatch the population of Earth.

Then comes Skynet...

I`ve already seen this in school, they made us watch it to show us how inferior and stuff we are or somehting, ugh i hate when they do that.
However, i like the facts presented in this video, i think its super interesting. And i always LOL at the thought of Myspace as a country haha

Another question, how can computers be smarter than people because people can work through problems using logic, reasoning, and past expiriences. All computers have is memory, no logic or reasoning

In all honesty I don`t want to find out what it will be like in 2000 years. We are already so isolated from each other by technology and it`s only taken a few decades. I shudder to think what will happen in a few centuries

Anyway what more do we need technology to do in our day-to-day lives? We already can listen to music, browse the internet, call people, watch movies, all on our phones

does computing capibility mean memory? because if it said that a supercomputer can know how to do more thing than the entire race that doesn`t make sence because we have to know it for a computer to know

"How can a computer surpass the computational abilities of a human, when it`s a human that builds it? I just find that impossible."

It means the computation *speed*. For example, a computer can decipher things in days that would take humans years. In the future, a computer will be able to decipher things that humans could never do in 1000 lifetimes.

this is why I always pose the question to people, if you could some how "freeze" yourself for 500 or 1000 years, would you? would you rather live 2000 years ago, 1000 years ago, now, 1000 years in the future or 2000 years in the future?

and my favorite thing to ponder of all:

imagine what all a turtle has seen happen. especially the turtles who live 200-300 years...

I like being alive now. everything changes every few years. A few hundred years ago, we`d all be born and die without witnessing any major changes. I`m just kind of bummed that I`m missing out on the stuff even further in the future.

Reminded me of a lot of the commercials you see on TV that essentially say, "The future is scary. You should fear it. Go to our website."

At least this one didn`t exactly purport to have some kind of message it was trying to get across. I was expecting to say something along the lines of, "You`re government is lying to you" OR "Humanity sucks. buy a Mac".

No no no, the computer isn`t better or smarter than you, it just has more computational power. It can do what we tell it do do much faster and with more accuracy.

Intelligence and computational power are very different.

@ Crucible

It means that the statement has long since become out dates because when the phrase was coined 1 in a million would be no one like you. Now there is so many people in china, 1 in a million wouldn`t be that rare at all. Roughly 1300 copies in the country.

2049 seems like the time to be alive. ;p
You`d be running entire dimensions off a computer that powerful. <.<

crucible it meant that even if you were one in a illion in china, there are so many people there that there would be 1300 other people that are 1 in a million.its not a statistic. its telling you theres a whole bunch a people livin in china.

I find it hard to believe that there would be 1300 people that look just like me. Unless that statement was only directed at Asians, since they all look alike.
