Yeah, Will Wright is definitely a genius, but has he influenced the gaming world as much as Miyamoto?

Although Wright`s games are absolutely coolarific, and he`s definitely had huge influence, I think pioneering the platform game puts Miyamoto ahead.

Jesus Christ, that fat guy annoyed the hell outta me. The nasaly voice was textbook geek, and his pvercompensation type styling wasn`t helping either.

Victory7, I believe that we can reach a favourable middle ground at Half Life 2. And maybe Portal? If you haven`t played it, I would recommend it with every fibre of my being.

@WeeToddDid
Thanks for at least not flaming me, I respect that. I`ve never been too enthusiastic about the story in my games, it has to be seamlessly blended into the game, otherwise I feel like I`m playing a game and being forced to watch a five minute movie every time I do something. But my personal favorite, now that`s a tough one. If I had to choose one (single player) videogame to store in a vault while the Earth was nuked to preserve humanity, I`d probably go with the Half-Life 2. I swear, I`ve played through that game at least a dozen times, and every time I do, I see something I didn`t see previously. There were no cutscenes, no levels, no interruptions, just one massive adventure with so many events to see that I would be happy playing 10 years from now. The only problem with "the greatest game ever" question is that I have plenty of games in different genres that would deserve the title, so I`m really not content with just saying Half-life is the best.

@Victory7,

I think the flames you got were because your original answer was a bit acerbic, even if it wasn`t intended so!
I`d reject the claim that I was young at the time it came out, I`d been playing games for a while, but I still remember the effect Ocarina had on me. I would agree the story is a bit cliché, but it`s the storytelling that is the most compelling aspect the game for me. The plot twists, the sweeping cut-scenes and endless subquests were delivered perfectly, and the fact that these were new innovations in gaming only intensified the magic I felt when I played.

Other games may have emulated this, but an update in graphics or lengthening the story or adding "immersion" does`t make a game "better" in my humble opinion.
For me, Ocarina is timeless. It`s like films, or books. Star Wars is my favourite film, despite it`s age and graphics.

Which game is your favourite then?

PS I loved Majora`s Mask`s darker tones, but it was too subtley

They didn`t even mention Pikmin! It wasn`t the "bestest" seller, but, it was huge!

Augh. And, Ocarina of Time was pretty damn awesome, but, I must say I enjoyed Majora`s mask more at the time. The characters had a lot more life to them, they were better designed and more realistic.

LoZ: Twilight Princess schools them all, however.

Hahaha! Wow, I sure did get a lot of feedback/flame for that last comment I made. I`ll try to answer them all:
The game is fun, but what I felt that there is really no replay value, many people will say it was the greatest simply because they were young at the time and remember it being one of the few good N64 games that came out in it`s early years (don`t make me start on Halo for the Xbox, ugh). Sure, it introduced new concepts to the gaming world, but games after it did it so much better that Ocarina eventually became eclipsed by them. Ocarina`s story is mediocre at best (evil dude kidnaps princess (holy poo, Mario anyone??) and guy goes on a thrice replictaed quest to save her). The plot for Ocarina is the same for every Zelda game before it, just in 3D. Look, Ocarina isn`t a bad game, it`s a great game, but not the best. I have to laugh at the comment by "littleb" though, because Ocarina of Time was lauded as having the best graphics of the year. What do you say t

The guy is not a genius. You clearly don`t know what genius is.

I`ve seen `documentaries` like this before, all they do is make you realize that video games had to start somewhere.

I definitly side with littleb. I love good graphics just as much as the next person. But if the game doesn`t have a good story or gameplay, regardless how good the graphics are, i wouldn`t play it for very long.

Though I typically prefer the more open-ended and god-controlling kind of games, and have never owned a gaming console, this was really interesting.

Why do we watch kids tell us what we already know, Miyamoto was inspired? Kids who were not even born when Mario was famous.

Yes, everyone orgasm to the awesomeness of Miyamoto.

I did wish they said more about other stuff like Sega though. Miyamoto is great but, I wanted to hear about his competition as well =/

@Victory7 - u must have been like 5 years old when ocarina of time first came out therefore u most probably didn`t play it upon release.
It`s all about the initial impact it has on the player at the time of release. Ocarina of time is a masterpiece and EASILY the best game of all time.

Having worshiped Sir Miyamoto from the tender age of 13, I do appreciate such acknowledgment of his genius.

I wish he were still closely involved with Zelda, but I have great confidence in Aonuma. :D

And after Wii Music, maybe it`s best he, uh... took a break to recharge his, uhm... creative juices. :|

Ocarina of Time really is the best game of all time. I played through it again a few weeks ago, and no game has stuck with me in such a way that it did.

There are many many great games. But Ocarina of Time is timeless, and I`m not sure any game will ever surpass the indescribable magic it possesses.

Ocarina of Time is my favorite game out of anything, ever.

"Ocarina of Time as greatest game ever? You have to be kidding me. Great game, sure. But play it again sometime this week and I think you`ll change your mind."

This is what people who care more about graphics then gameplay or story say.

Ocarina of Time has the depth and storyline that most modern games can`t even touch.

@Victory7,

I`ve just finished completing it again for a billionth time, and if you compare it to most (non-Zelda) RPGs from before it was made there`s a stark contrast. 10 years on it still holds up better than most. Z-targeting, immersive 3D storytelling and balanced real-time rpg combat, it invented them all and did it right first time.

Miyamoto is NOT solely responsible for the game though, that`s partially why the vid annoys me, he didn`t create a lot of the things about many of the games listed that helped make them so great.

Either way it`s just my opinion, why do you disagree? :)

Did you see the female pundit? Blink and you`ll miss her! Hehe.

But yeah, Miyamoto is one of the big players, but not sure he should get all the credit they`re giving him.

PS Ocarina of time IS the greatest game of all time.
