Yeah, like you knew ANY of that before I told you.
For those of you that missed it, shell of expanding gas != star.

Doesn`t bother me. I`m glad we`re working on where to find our gas stations in the future.

Looking at this just makes me thing that, on the other side, there might be something in the universe that would be so small that Earth would look as big as this last one compared to it. And, well, why not, something could even live on this small thing. Argh, brings so many questions. XD

I`m surprised we aren`t sucked towards them with the immense mass they must be.

Imagine, all that mass SO condensed from gravity that it occupies a space smaller than a speck of dust.

duffy, no crap they aren`t "actual" photos. They are depications so that we can get the idea of the measurement/view, so that we can picture the size difference in our minds.
Also, that is possible. Also, we are seeing some stars as more then "dots"
How about you "learn 2 science"

If you took that sun and compressed it to the size of a pee you would have made a black hole. That sun is a sputem in the toilet bowl of black holes

Let me get this straight, you compress the sun until it`s a black hole then you pee into it, and the sun is a loogie?

Duffy = sad old man

Remember, this is the same guy that tried to tell us that if we like the skit "Who`s on First" then we are all sheep.

You are less credible than this video Duffy, and this video itself isn`t that credible to begin with. BTW, I think we all understand that they are not real photos. But thank you for teaching us all what you think we should know.

"Total load of BS. Notice they never once mention the MASS of any of these stars?"

Valid point sir!! A few other things they do not mention:

-The color "hot pink"
-The Rolling Stones
-Gravity
-Cowboy Hats

Which means that these things are also "BS".

That is all...

Great. If you guys believe this, then I`m ten feet tall when I blow a smoke ring up in the air. It`s the same thing.

And by the way - those aren`t real pictures. Stars still show up as dots, even with the most powerful telescopes. Learn 2 science.

Shut up. Whatever they`re made up of are they`re massive and thats the impressive part. HUGE.

"Total load of BS. Notice they never once mention the MASS of any of these stars? That`s because the mass is barely 150 times the mass of the Sun. So it`s a hyper-inflated load of hot air. What we`re looking at is the outer shell of a star being blown off, not the whole dang thing."

Who cares about the mass? it`s size that matters

@ everyone who is trying to predict how long light would take.

Just remember that the size of this thing means that the gravitational pull would be so strong that according to theory of general relativity, the light would perceptively travel much much slower than the speed of light as we know it.

@Mind_Madness

It would take that many hours. not years.
8,634,022,790.4km divided by 150km *PER HOUR*
57560151.936 / 24 = 2398339.664 days
2398339.664 / 365.25 = 6566.296 years.

so there you go, Frogtango. six and a half millennia, driving at 150km/h nonstop.

@Frogtango:

It takes light about 8 hours to travel around the VY Canis Majoris circumference.
One light hour equals 1,079,252,848.8 km/h.
Eight light hours equals 8,634,022,790.4
divided by a constant speed of a car of 150 km/h we get that it would take the car about 57560151.936 years to travel around

based on my math which was based on the idea that it takes 14.5 secs for light to go around Sun, it`d take 26.18 days for light to go around VY CMa, assuming their estimation of 2100 solar radii is correct.

Male 4,793
this star is very interesting, this VY canis majoris, heres some quickly found facts i stumbled upon.

looky!

Astronomers and scientists estimate that it will take eight years for light to travel around its circumference.

hmm, wikipedia says it would take 8 hours, but i know that is wrong due to some math that im not gonna post, so now we dont know how long it takes light to go around VY CMa!

Eichenkatze, I love this stuff too. My brother has a masters degree in astronomy and physics and I love hearing about some of the amazing things he tells me.

The only reason I wish I could live longer than the length of an ordinary life is so that I could see how much more we discover. We`re all going to miss out on some HUGE discoveries!

vv "repost, ya earth is small but most likely suns the size of earth are the only ones with planets similer to earth conditions. but their too small to see."

Buzzer, your intimidating grasp of interplanetary physics is only matched by your ability to form simple sentences with fairly elementary-school spelling, such as "their too small to see".

Please, Buzzer, educate us some more in the error of our ways. More people need to hear of this "Discovery Channel" that you speak of.
