Link: Teacher Makes Students Do An In-Class Slavery Demo - Re-enactments and demonstrations can be helpful teaching tools, but did a New York teacher take the approach too far?

The teacher should not have done it, but only because it`s something that does not need to be demonstrated. The girl involved should not have made a big deal out of it either, it`s not exactly a traumatizing experience to have to crawl under a desk with your hands taped.

vv I agree with riot... why does this have to be "demonstrated"? What next, live classroom-participation demonstrations of the conditions at Auschwitz during the holocaust for history class?

I don`t think that it is a big of a deal as they are making it seem. I did this demonstration in my class, but the entire class participated and it was minus the taped hands. There were 3 regular school tables and 7 kids under each and we stayed like that for a few minutes. Nobody started crying or was traumatized. That girl needs to get over herself.

we did this in my class, but it was the entire class. this little girl is full o` crap. she needs to stop over-reacting.

10 bucks says if a white girl did the same thing, this wouldn`t be on the news.

Yeah that kid overreacted. I don`t see how you could possibly be traumatized by this. but the teacher shouldn`t have done it nonetheless.

I think she was overreacting, but there was that interesting Stanford Prison experiment that had to be discontinued becasue the "guards" starting abusing the "prisoners". I sure had this demonstration been longer something similar whould have happened.

To tell you the truth, I can`t really pin-point what all the issue is. Is it a "race" thing (which I guess is the case if the NAACP is involved)? If so, what`s the nationality of the teacher? They never say, so if she`s "African American" is that point moot?

Or is it the whole "binding" thing in which the student apparently complied throughout the process as she allowed the teacher to bind her hands and feet as well as went under the table?

funny you should mention that, i took a class on the holocaust in 12th grade and on the second day of class the teacher made us stand packed together to give us an idea of how packed the trains were. oddly enough no one in the class was traumatized

The girl involved shouldn`t have made a big deal out of it? Wow..judging a little girl for being too sensitive. Way to go IAB douchebags! I`ve got little sisters, and they get freaked out by little things—let alone something as embarrassing and shaming as being told to reenact slavery. Good grief, that teacher should be fired or at the very least be told to go to child sensitivity training. And calling the mother dumb sh*t? Wtf is wrong with you people.

I think children in schools should now be given ear plugs and blacked out glasses to wear in class so that they don`t become upset or offended in lessons. It`s OK though, they can remove the protection after school so that they can see what they`re doing in the grand theft auto game they`ll probably play at home.

Huh, last I checked there was huge difference between a little girl in middle school and a senior in high school. You don`t traumatize kids to make them understand the lesson. Just as you don`t use racial terms to make them understand racism, or mock a kids sexuality to make them understand sexual discrimination or favor rich kids over poor kids to make them understand the real world. If you want to explain racism, show them the movies Roots or Amistad. Poor, poor teaching skills.

It`s just because they were black or because the child was a woman. Women tend to think with their heart and not necessarily there head (Which is why men make better business people, but that`s another subject entirely). Point is, they completely over reacted out of, regardless of which reason it was above, immaturity. It would make their ancestors ashamed that she cried over being TAPED and just moved under A DESK while they suffered through the real thing. Makes me want to smack her.

Mmm, well maybe now the little girl will have future appreciation for what her ancestors had to endure. Maybe now she`ll have more of a chance of growing up to be a respectful, thoughtful individual.

I don`t think the teachers demonstration is necessarily a bad one. She`s probably done it countless times before. She just got unlucky that she had a whiner. Shame.

That`s what I did in my social studies class in 8th grade. Well, there was no tape or anything. When we came into the room, we were told to not talk, and sit under our desks for 15 minutes or so with the lights off. Then the teacher said that that`s what slaves had to do for weeks at a time.

I think that the concept is a good idea, but she took it a little far.

youre right, there is a big difference between a middle schooler and a senior but i think we can agree theres less of a difference between middle schoolers and freshmen, who made up the majority of the class.
anyway the point i was trying to make was that our class did have a holocaust demonstration, the part about none of us being traumatized just seemed like a relevant side note considering that was the focus of the video

It was a stupid idea on the teacher`s part. That kind of thing doesn`t need to be demonstrated, a description is enough.

But I also think the girl is overreacting. `Traumatized` by having her hands taped and crawling under a desk? Please, it`s not like this was some kind of hostage situation where she was being held at gunpoint.
And as for people saying "but she`s just a little girl, guys!" Yeah, I was `just a little girl` once too, and I`m still pretty sure this is an overreaction.

As a teacher, I agree that it was a bad decision, but I don`t believe it deserves news coverage. Teachers are encouraged to employ all sorts of learning tools and activities to engage kids, and I guess this teacher thought it would be a hard-hitting way of getting through to them exactly how terrible slavery ships were. We show the film `Amistad` and I`ve had many children cry at some of the very graphic depictions. It was a mistake, but I don`t think she deserves to be publicly humiliated through the media.

That was a horrible decision on the teacher`s part. She should know that people in today`s society raise hell about everything. "It was HORRIFYING. I had my wrists tied together (With rope?) and I was sitting under a desk! It was so horrible that I started crying and I`m so traumatized I`ll never get good grades again!" News station: "That`s a great story! Inhumane treatment of students being forced to sit under a desk under HORRIBLE conditions for God knows how long (Maybe a minute?) This kind of evil torture cannot go without a story!"

Anwar- "...or favor rich kids over poor kids to make them understand the real world."

Yeah we do this at my junior high. People are chosen to be rich or poor and rich people sit at desks and poor people sit on the floor with a book to write on and this goes on for thirty min. and then they switch. There was whining, but no news coverage and no traumatization. i agree with LunarMoon. Its a ploy for an overprotective mom to get some extra money from the state. I wonder if she realizes that if she does sue the school, there would be worse conditions in the school and she would help pay for it out of her own pocket. Stupid naive woman.

I totally agree with the mother and her daughter. I mean, look at it this way, take the descendants of Jews from the Holocaust... every single Jew alive today is naturally afraid of Germans and Furnaces. (Because they are Jewish)

Take me for example. Because my descendants are Italian, I was born knowing how to speak fluent Italian, knowing how to paint and I have this undying taste for canoli`s.

This little girl and her Mother is perfectly right in crying foul play here. You know, because their descendants were slaves and all. You can`t just go around trying to use creative examples on how slavery was a bad thing. That is just silly!!

"I didn`t think there was a problem at first, then I heard that she only had black children in the demonstration."

Hmmm, so we cannot teach things about slavery using the correct color of people that were made to be slaves in the past? I guess its good that they don`t teach about things like the rape of Nanking in the classroom. Some poor Chinese kid would be all up in arms.

I suppose it would be totally wrong for an instructor to call upon a female to describe pregnancy or menstruation as part of an instruction. Or maybe the differences in CPR techniques from male to female, sizes and ages. I mean, during CPR you have to demonstrate different techniques according to these things... is that also wrong?

From now on I think our teachers just need to tell the students to read the textbook and there will be a teast in a month. Then sleep the rest of the time in class.

My teacher did something like that in4th grade and we randomly chose out of two colors of m&ms, i was supposed to represent a clack kid and it was horrible, he segregated us at lunch time and made us read while everyone was playing gmaes and told us we were stupid. Everybody in the class was crying by the end of lunch including the ones that were supposed to represent white students.
He was one of my favorite teachers and it really showed us whatit was like when everything was segregated, but i think he took it to far, it was the most emotional day of my elementary school life!

I remember when we were being taught about slavery in middle school. I got to act as an African slave, even though I`m white, and all day I just screamed "I`m black!" at other people.

Back on the subject, I think the teacher did take it a bit far, only in that they chose an unwilling child to use for the demonstration.

Having people volunteer would be a good idea; there are many experiences in history you can`t just see on film to realize. And if no one volunteers, don`t do it; it`s their choice if they want to know what it could have been like. The fact she was picked against her will is another story, though.

I don`t understand why the child was traumatized. Its not like she personally experienced those things during the time of the slaves. She also could have declined participating, its not like the teacher could have forced her. I don`t really know, it just seems like the kid wants to cause drama.

I had to do something like that in elementary school except it was a reenactment of the civil war... I was on the south. We had to memorize the Gettysburg address or make southern style food for "points". We also had little "personality" cards; I remember I was a married pastor with 3 slaves who thought it was a necessary evil.

In the end, the south ended up having more points so we won XD

I wonder what that was supposed to teach me.

    "Wow, that`s pretty messed up.
To make a student do it is wrong.
I wouldn`t have done it, I would have laughed in the teachers face and told her to go f*** herself."

I saw a parent plop her child on a toilet once... the child seriously didn`t want to do it, he was totally against the idea. I know that if I were that child, I`d tell my parent to go f*ck yourself. This is why I still poo my shorts to this very day!

Can you imagine if we didn`t gently force and guide students into learning stuff, even if they are uncomfortable? This wasn`t malicious I don`t think. This Mother has most likely taught her daughter to carry the weight of slavery around her shoulders. I blame the Mother.

What a wimp. America is getting too soft. So let me get this straight. A teacher taped the girl`s hands and feet together and made her sit under a desk. Did she whip her? no. Did she beat her? no. It wasn`t even an accurate demonstration, yet the girl was crying. What a horrible thing to do *sarcasm*. The teacher is doing her a favor because later in life she won`t be so traumatized when she gets arrested.

"she taped their hands together, feets together .." whipped them, made them work the fields? Oh wait, that didn`t happen, did it? We can`t bring back the memories of when this innocent middle-schooler was a poor slave in the 1600s, right? .. .. .. please .. stupid call on the teacher for doing it in the first place (and having two actual black people being the slaves in the simulation). But also should not be taken this ridiculously far ...

It really wasn`t that bad. I think that she should have picked another girl (since this one is apparently /extremely/ sensitive), but, the demonstration wasn`t really a bad idea.

A lot of kids probably would have enjoyed participating in it.

apologize for it? bet she did it every year. just now some pussy who`s been told by her parents that everyone hates black people and anything that you can derive race from is in fact racist.

    hahaha!

We totally did this in my US History class last year. The teacher made 5 kids "slave masters" and made them tie up our hands and feet and then we all had to lay on the floor packed really tight.

If the NAACP only caught wind of that at my school...

The mother is "weighing other options" because an apology did not "satisfy her".

Hmmm, I wonder where this is going?

Pffft...it was a class project--maybe the teacher used a poor demonstration method, maybe not.

But at the end of the day? Get the eff over it lady...teachers got enough crap to worry over, like TEACHING, instead of stressing over a frivolous lawsuit or getting fired.
