Ironically, the country which displayed this terrible display of over-capitalism is the same one that was fighting against it just twenty years ago.

Did you know that the song "happy birthday" is not in public domain?

What are the Germans and Russians up too?

What’s with this acronym trade-marking thing?

In that case, I hereby trade mark WTF and OMG

As in OMG WTF just happened with the trade marking of OMG and WTF

The use of the two words requires a license.

The lack of the license will result in arrest. The use of the two accroynymss when being arrested will result in torture.

I WANT FREE MOINEY!!!!!!!!

Well just to tell you guys. ottocap have trademarked LOL and ROFL on apperials. However it seems like other companies been breaking it. It was trademarked long time ago. It is hard for us to sell lol and rolf stuff though because ottocap is a wholeseller that makes custom caps for resellers.

Don`t worry, Crucible. There are TONS of people who don`t know what "Free Speech" actually means. You usually see them as 13-17 year olds in threads about kids getting suspended from school for their T-Shirt, though.

Male 1,815
Rman, how often have you heard of a court case where free speech has been denied in the US? The fact is, there are tonnes of exceptions to that law, so your argument is kind of weak. Also, don`t you think companies would PREFER if you talked about them or their products?

The biggest morons are on here.
1) Even if a trademark is what you think it is and you had to pay for using a ;-), its still only been trademarked in Russia, trademarks in foreign nations have no effect on us.
2) In the US at least, we have free speech, and a trademark in no way limits what you can atually say. I can say McDonalds, Ronald McDonald, Coke, etc all I want even thouogh those are all trademarks, and not pay a cent. Free speech at its finest. If I try to sell something or otherwise make money through the use of the things trademarked then I`d be in trouble. Same thing for the ;-) in Russia. You can`t get fined for using it, thats just idiotic to think, it would just implicate if I want to start up a business called ;-) I would probably run into trouble.

A trademark is just regarding business representation. Russian citizens wouldn`t have to pay to put a ;-) in their texts, only if they want to use it as part of their business. It`s still too common have been accepted as a trademark, but it is.

Still, he is trying to charge for its use: "It won`t cost that much - tens of thousands of dollars," said the douchebag president of Superfone.

Though, Nikita Sherman, president of a Russian social networking site, said: "You`re not likely to find any retards in Russia who`ll pay Superfone for the use of emoticons".

Trademark is not the same as copyright. A trademark is not reserved for exclusive use, and only denotes that a particular entity uses it as an identifying mark. And this isn`t even that shocking. After all, if the letter i can be trademarked (Apple), why not an emoticon?
