Did Coldplay Steal From Joe Satriani?

You mean Chris Martin couldn"t make crappy music on his own? Listen and judge for yourself.

to each his own...

there are tons of songs out there that sound similar...

it might be just me... but i feel like there won`t be any good songs LEFT to be written in the future. i know there`s infinite ways to write songs... buuuuut i just don`t get how musicians do it in the first place... and i am one. haha.

i`ll stop incessantly rambling now. =)

though I do agree that coldplay is pretty much the lamest band to ever exist.

i get it, it`s not really a pipe, its just an image, wow, deep. if you want someone who interestingly questions the nature of art, duchamp is the man to go to anyway.

"Exactly where do you find pretense in this painting. It is what it is. It doesn`t seem really all that ostentatious to me."

it makes an obvious statement about the nature of a painting in order to seem intellectual. and anyway all of his (can`t think of his name because i was never interested by his works) paintings have a very mechanical style to them which i am not a fan of at all.

and yes angrytick zeppelin are gods.

the real tragedy here isn`t the obvious theft of melody. it`s the fact that whoever made this video actually listens to joe satriani.

Wow, Coldplay should`ve asked Joe Satriani to play that riff over their lyrics--would`ve proved better, imo. But then again Coldplay is and always will be just pretentious college tunes crap. Spare me.

"Suspicious" Haha, no. I`m sure that with thousands of songs out there there`s bound to be loads which sounds similar. I hear plenty of new songs and think certain riffs or part of the melody sound like another song, but I don`t assume they stole it. Anyway, this is a pretty basic melody so I`m sure even more bands than Coldplay and Joe Satriani have something that sounds like it.

they`re the same because they both used the same type of cheap melodic phrases that are common to western pop music. instead of requiring the monkeys with the typewriters come up with shakespeare, this is like waiting till they all type the letter p.

joe may be more focused on melody than most of his contemporaries, but he still has all the taste of a midwestern housewife. and i`ve enjoyed some of coldplay`s stuff, but let`s admit, they have a formula.... not exactly ground breakers.

if (garbage == garbage) {

Listen to Single by New Kids on the Block featuring Ne-Yo.

Same general beginning of the riff.

If artists were killed for sounding similar or even exactly (for a portion of the song) the same as another, then we`d have a Whole lot more dead guys with instruments.

I can`t believe people are saying stuff like "who cares if they stole it or not?"

I think the answer to that is: EVERYBODY.

If it`s a coincidence, then fine. If it`s a RIP-OFF, then f*ck them...or any musician who rips off someone else`s creation and then pawns it off as their own.

There`s nothing more slimy than someone saying, "I wrote that!" when in reality they just ripped it off.

It`s like that loser guy that gives some chick a poem that he "wrote" when in reality he just copied it from a book of poems, or grabbed it from some 70`s lyrics.

Ok, so I analyzed it and this might be wrong, but:
Coldplay`s tune goes VI VII III i in F minor, and Satriani`s goes iv VII III i in B minor. The only difference harmonically is that Coldplay`s progression starts with VI and Satriani`s... Read More starts with iv, but the difference is pretty much negligible because VI is just the upper extensions of iv so the sound is very similar. And they are the same tempo within a few BPM, and they have essentially the same melody. That`s a hell of a coincidence.

That ending audio sounds so much better than both songs individually.

--and TDK master, based on what you typed, I`ve come to the conclusion that you obviously don`t know what chord progression is or actually, have any musical ear whatsoever.

Anyways, with all due respect, I don`t see how someone can not find that the peices of music used in this video are similar. The only thing different that I hear is instrumentation due to the genre shift. And the background has a different rhythm while keeping the same harmony.

But I could totally imagine a guitar soloist going onstage at some coldplay concert and playing that. It fits too well.

And hell, I wouldn`t be surprised if they did steal from him. Though steal may be a somewhat harsh word for this, since you can only have so many variations in a song since chances are, it`s been done before, by someone.

If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him. Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence upon the song Viva La Vida. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavours. Coldplay."

So... for the record, upon feeling the need to grab my guitar and argue,

both of these songs use the same basic chords progression, but it`s the same progression that every rock song has been using since the dawn of time...

IV V I mIV

and the ONLY part where the guitar and voice match up dead on is basically every guitarists go-to form. The odds that two notes would sync up over the exact same progression are pretty high.

Speaking from a band member and songwriter point of view, having a song that sounds the same as another is fairly easy considering a lot of bands use other songs as inspiration. And chord progression is a common thread amongst MANY songs.

Bands have been known to take sounds from other bands, as well as from classical music (See Bittersweet Symphony by the Verve... Awful similar to Grieg`s In the Hall of the Moutain King.)

JGESS, Vanilla Ice Didn`t get away with it... however, it`s not the same situation. Copyright laws are pretty touchy when it comes to borrowing songs. It`s not an exact copy of the music, and there`s several differences... enough that there`s reallt not a case.

Vanilla Ice on the other hand, just added two notes to Freddie Mercury`s melody. That`s just blatant theft.

Well the chord progression being the same isn`t copying cause I mean...there are only so many chord combinations or scales you can do. And if it`s the same scale, there are gonna be similiar melodies too, I only spotted about 1 or 2 bars that had the same melody and then it diverts. I bet there are a million billion songs with a similiar melody, it`s just how it is, music in this style isn`t infinate. That`s why music gets pooter n pooter each decade.

Coldplay is not only talentless, but stupid too. To steal from such a revered and reknowned guitar god like Satriani just shows the level of ratty-tardation they are afflicted with. "Surfing with the Alien" is one of the greatest Albums ever made, every song is solid and true.

0
Reply
Female 340
Notice they`re only using this one part of each song? That means that the rest of it is likely NOT copied or whatever.

So they used the same chord progression. They`re different songs, that`s all there is to it. That`s like saying they swiped from an orchestra because they use the standing bells and violins.

*ugh*

People have been borrowing parts of each others` songs since the times of Beethoven, Mozart, even Tchaikovsky. (Listen to the 1812 Overture... The start sounds strangely familiar... that`s right. The royal march for the British Royal Family.)

As for the "finite number of note combinations..." That`s honestly a type of lie. In all seriousness, you need to factor in the number of instruments, time signature, the song`s key (F major would be very different from d minor) and phrasing. Very technical stuff in music. It would take millenia to figure out ALL of them. And, judging by the vastness of the music culture now, we`re nowhere near the end.

Gotta agree with Pikapp here, the odds of the first 3 notes of a particular melody sounding like the first 3 of another are unusually high.

...and as for song samples used in rap, nobody "steals" anybody`s songs. Samples have to be cleared by the record companies -- and in most cases, OK`d by the actual artist too.

Female 299
Have to say, when I first heard about this case I thought it would be like The Verves case, if they hadn`t of said anything I honestly think no one would have noticed that they`d used the same riff as The Rolling Stones.

BUT, now then I heard both I see that it`s rather similar. It doesn`t matter if the notes aren`t exactly the same, it just has to be recognisable as another`s work, the reason The Hooisers didn`t get sued by ELO for Goodbye Mr A sounding STUPIDLY like Mr Blue Sky is that they had an agreement and ELO are mentioned in the album sleeve.

Male 7
vv Pikapp76, as it said on the video, it`s not just the first three notes that are the same... it`s the progression of the chords, and the background music. You can`t say they didn`t steal it just because viva la vida is a dumbed down version of a better song.

It`d be like someone writing `To Kill a Mockingbird` in more modern language, taking some of the symbolism out, then claiming it was their`s. It`s still stealing.

i don`t know if anyone else noticed, but only the first THREE notes in the melodic line were the same. i don`t think that`s enough to merit an accusation of someone stealing another person`s line.

sampling in hip hop and rap is completely different than stealing a melody and a chord progression. a sample is taken out of context and used to form a separate beat, or at least it does when the artist samples well, which i think kanye does.
