Water Balls

Submitted by: deathxtra 8 years ago in Science

The substance comes in contact with air, loses its polar ability and sticks to itself, making water balls. Balls!

this is sometimes marketed as "watersorb" (check ebay) or you can buy it in coloured bead form here:

(my students adored them) They CANNOT be made in the method outlined here, but i guess ignorant losers have nothing better to do than pollute the web with useless crap like this and try to mislead those that are interested in finding out the truth

yosemine, i also lurked on i-a-b for a few years before joining, since u can view without joining. took a few years b4 i felt strongly enough about something to actually sign up so i could comment.
o and i also call shenanigans on this, eventhough i wish it was real. that would be cool.

So, you gave us a link the same video. I don`t get it. And, I`m pretty sure those are bath beads, because, if you look into the water closely @ around 2:10, you can see them floating around. But, if someone can actually do this and make it work, major kudos to you. I`m pretty sure there would have to be a bit more to it than this. If you Google "water beads", you`ll find many people trying to recreate this and they point out what is wrong about the video. I`d recommend seeing what they have to say if you really want to do this experiment.

I think this is a very cute video. I`m sure that these boys had fun making it! For those who try to use their tips, I feel sorry for. They will nvr figure it out, lol...

Yes, bath beads... Lavender scented most likely, as the water was tinted purple at the end.

I wonder how many people are going to actually try this to only find out that it`s a fake video...those are obviously either bath beeds, or salt beeds.

nice try though.

@Slade8: "And I still think a water powered car COULD be done, only the video was fake. I mean, what is water? Oxygen and Hydrogen, right? Now, are those flammable? Yes? Right...."

You fail your second law of thermodynamics. Yes, burning oxygen and hydrogen releases energy, and... turns them into water. To get that water back separated back into hydrogen and oxygen you need to put the same amount of energy back in.

Hello, Yosemine. Welcome to IAB`s forums. As we all know, this video is fake. Then again, it sure is entertaining. And I still think a water powered car COULD be done, only the video was fake. I mean, what is water? Oxygen and Hydrogen, right? Now, are those flammable? Yes? Right....
Now, just to find a way to smash the molecules...

OMG you guys! i figured out how to do this experiment! im not joking! but it costs a bit more money then getting those things.

First go here: http://www.lacrafts.com/Merchant2/mercha...

and buy the clear type of water absorbing balls. then make a video of you showing how to make that special water. Stop the video, dump that water out and put in regular water, then put these in there and BAM! you have yourself exactly what you see in that video :P

Man it is amazing what people will get up in arms about on this site :)

All you have to do is look for the ones at the top of the list that have more than 30 comments and you know you`ve got a good one!

As far as the video is concerned I think Jess 776 hit it on the head. But go ahead. Gather up all the ingredients and try this. Just don`t be suprised when the skin on your hand comes off like a glove.

I remember the "Japanese Water-Powered Car" very well, davymid. Also the "invisible suit" that isn`t, several holograms that weren`t, a rubber ball that doesn`t really unlock a car door, a house that isn`t just a meter wide (with pics, ffs), and many more.

Someone tells you the Japanese found a way to power cars off water and we can stop searching for oil now! WHEEE!!!!
I`m an electronics designer for a game company, and every so often someone announces they have a "mind control" interface, which isn`t. I get deluged with nonsense about it and wind up banging MY head against walls.

Remember Orbo? Ever get that email that says Mars is going to appear the size of the full moon? I really feel like I`m living in that movie "Idiocracy" sometimes.

what you actually get is sodium acetate which as also pretty cool.
you remember the sculptures…
so mixing vinegar with baking soda is NOT a reason to think its fake, stupid.

"Also, I think it`s about time I joined I-A-B after browsing it for four years. :D"

Now you`re going to join the rest of us in wondering if others think the comments you post are as clever as you, yourself do.

We all secretly wish for a ratings system for our comments. We just KNOW that even though we can never catch up with the people whose names are in red, we`d lead the league with a 3.9 average. ;)

You guys in the know shouldn`t have let on that it was fake. I totally would`ve fallen for it.

I mean, in the video everything looked real. I figured this was going to be a safe alternative to playing with mercury.

Oh well, back to rolling around those little beads of metallic goodness.

danthew, I think you pretty much got it. I bought these tiny little balls that swell in the water once, and they become huge compared to how small they were. Since they get so huge and full of water, they are completely clear and disappear in water. These balls appear to be the same. At about 2:33 he has one fall out, and it bounces the same way.

Also, I think it`s about time I joined I-A-B after browsing it for four years. :D

vv "And, it looks like half the people on here still believe this is real."

Duffy, you`re right, and it`s scary sometimes. I work for a major multinational oil company... Remember the "Japanese Water-Powered Car" post a while back? Dude, I`d say about 90% of commenters fell for it hook, line and sinker.

My forehead is only now recovering from the bruises suffered that day due to my head hitting the desk repeatedly and with considerable velocity. Sometimes this place makes me despair...

You`re right, I`m expecting too much. But when they say to "mix vinegar and baking soda" I THINK that ought to be enough of a tip-off right there.

And, it looks like half the people on here still believe this is real.

O.K. it does not have the same effect as the video............... i put my hand and and scooped up nothing but an empty hand of water.... BUT the water did not act like regular water..... it was like my hand was a windsheild with rain-x on it.... it kinda beaded off in small beads.... it also turns ur hand a darker color? may be an indication of silver iodine... overall i wouldnt try it...

Duffy, if you`re looking for a website that posts scientifically accurate and relevant information, may I point you somewhere else?

IAB is not that site.

I`m sorry if you were duped into believing it and are now upset, or you think all homemade youtube videos are supposed to be taken seriously, but please do not take out your own gullibility on the moderators.

Thank you.

Vinegar + Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) => Sodium Acetate + Carbon Dioxide + Water.

Although I`d follow If you really want to make balls of sodium acetate, this is much more reliable.

vv "Are the mods that gullible? Are the mods that STUPID?"

Duffy, I`m a professional scientist. I`ve got a PhD and a BSc (First Class Honours) and I`m a published author on peer-reviewed scientific journals 11 times now. And yes, I know anyone can say any old sh*t over the internet, but that actually 100% true.

This site`s about boredom relief, nothing more, nothing less. We know it`s fake. Hell, if we had to reject everything on the innernet that was fake, we`d have precious little material left to work with. Relax, man.

oh and im also quite sure that acctually making sodium acetate is quite a bit mroe complicated than this. if not then im making some, you can put a pile in your hand and light it, it goes up so fast you only feel a warm burst of air basically.

Willow, Baal, I feel and share the depth of your pain on the whole loose/lose thing. For me, it`s right up there with should of/should have, i could care less/I couldn`t care less, and that steaming, festering turd of the grammatical world, "irregardless".

Rest easy, it`s fixed now, along with the errant apostrophe in "loses it`s polar ability". I shoulda been an editor, I could`ve satified my inner grammar nazi all day long.
