alright dead thread but i`ll consider this my defense

ACCORDING TO THE ARTICLE
which is very important because i don`t know what actually happened. i wasn`t there

Having been previously robbed and shot. One would see fit to avoid such near death experiences. One way would be to buy a gun. another would be to live in an underwater bubble. Things such as getting shot or wounded otherwise would cause someone to be more `cautious` though in this case overly paranoid.
How i brought darwin into this was, survival of the fittest. near death experiences, like in their name come close to death. Having been shot once before and serving jail time. a great way to protect oneself is to buy a gun. seeing as he can`t evolve to save himself might as well figure out how else. i would consider buying a gun after getting shot somewhat intelligent as well. not to mention i`m sure that at least half of you would too... Not given this pretext. all i have to say now. maybe more later. kthxbai

@holycrap: that`s just ignorant. Don`t ever talk to anyone about anything ever again.

I don`t know what to say about this article. Why would they let a convict own an automatic weapon? Why would the family stop at some random house? Why would he feel the need to unload 30 rounds? And how do you treat this if he really did suffer from post-traumatic stress syndrome because he was robbed? If he goes to jail, he`s going to be brutally murdered by other inmates because he killed a kid.

""But I`m almost 100% sure it`s illegal to carry automatic weapons, I`m pretty sure AK-47s fall under that category.
Correct me if I`m mistaken.""

Automatic weapons can be obtained, but there are many hoops to jump through. Plus they`re expensive as only ones built domestically before 1986 or imported before 1968 are allowed.

However, there are many semi-automatic AK-47 variants that are as legal as any other rifle in most US states. So just because it`s called an AK-47 doesn`t mean it`s an automatic.

Depending on Patrick`s prior convictions it might have been illegal for him to own even a semi-automatic rifle though.

My Dad carries around a pistol with him everywhere he goes. If that had happened to either me or any one of my sisters, that guy would`ve been dead in a second. Which is exactly what he deserves. And even if it was illegal to own guns, those who are willing to kill someone in the first place would manage to get one probably through theft. Its better to make them legal so that innocent citizens can defend themselves.

Whoa, for a second there I was expecting Florida or Jersey, but I was sadly disappointed in South Carolina. What?!
But on a serious note, this is really tragic. This is why Halloween is getting worse and worse for me. If kids can`t even go out (and by kids I include people like me, despite the fact I`m *ahem* in high school) to have fun, what has our world come to? When we have to worry about our own safety because are toting around guns ready to fire them off at any occassion?
Innocence is ruined because of these people.

"Holy s*it! He killed Tay Zonday! that bastard!"

Just a tad insensitive.

"but neither do pens kill someone stone dead with a single shot - typo or not."

It was Halloween, what was he expecting to find at the door? A puppy?"

Actually, a burglary on Halloween would be quite unexpected, and the ex-convict could be anticipating one just for that reason.

But really, spraying that many rounds into a poor little could was a bit overkill.

Well... give a man a ball and he`ll bounce it give a man a puzzle and he`ll solve it, but give a man a gun, and he sure as hell aint gonna hammer nails in with it.

Do you people think an ex convict that would shoot a kid for knocking on a door is a typical American? Gun control/banning/etc will only take guns away from law abiding people... not this dumbass.

Crap like this will still happen even if there is a gun ban as people like him will still get guns.

evildick (<-thats probably going to censor...), I wasn`t taking this that seriously, I just googled gun crime percentage and then used the first page I came across... also read the bit at the bottom of that graph, it says it was done by The International Crime and Justice Research Institute. That sounds like a reasonably neutral source to me...

And silverlake, "thats only rednecks and gangsters" still Americans...

You can`t expect to reduce gun related deaths by giving the victims guns too. Thats just so not logical...

@Danthew

First, You should choose more "neutral" sources for your statistics. Referencing a blatant anti-gun page is always going to return anti-gun numbers. Just like referencing a pro-gun site will always return pro-gun numbers.

Second, I think you`re way too focused on guns as the root cause of the problems. If you did a little deeper, I believe, you`ll discover that the overall homicide rate (not just the firearm rates) coincide fairly closely to the gun numbers.

The implication is that the problem is not caused by the presence of firearms (however, it may be exasperated) and is likely, cultural or, at least sub-cultural.

I submit to all that the continued persecution of guns is a societal effort to avoid responsibility for the creation and growth of a violent society.

Try the BJS website for your future numbers (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/welcome.html)

The difference is with gun crime in the UK and the rest of europe is that if a child gets shot over here it`s BIG news for weeks during the investigations and everything. It`s very rare - so rare as to be shocking every single time, not just where the circumstances are dramatic like this case.

Poor kid, RIP. My heart goes out to the family.

People can make all kinds of comparisons arguing that it`s people who kill people and not guns - pens don`t make typos or whatever, but neither do pens kill someone stone dead with a single shot - typo or not. Totally incomparable.

oh and to the people saying that its illegal to own that type of gun in the US, surely its a tiny step from being allowed one type of gun to owning a different type? Rather than the big step of just owning any type of gun in most countries...

Look at the graph on this page:
http://www.gun-control-network.org/GF01....

see how America has the second highest gun ownership and also the most firearm deaths (per 10000 so its equal for each country) by a significant margin...

@Batmanners & KX250F

IANAL

I believe it is legal to own a fully automatic firearm so long as the owner has a Federal Firearms License (There are several types some allow for automatic weapons, some don`t)

OR....

A private citizen can purchase on from a FFL license holder on what is known as a Form 4

I believe the lock laws are locally defined and not at a federal level.

Remember, that rifle did not jump up and unload an entire magazine at an innocent 12 year old.

Blaming guns for crime is like blaming pens and pencils for misspelled words or keyboards for typos.

I think Everyone missed these important details...

"Police said they also charged a 19-year-old in his home, Ericka Patrice Pee, with obstruction of justice when she was caught trying to run away after the shooting with $7,500 in cash. Patterson did not give an explanation for the money."

And...

...Patterson said Patrick had multiple drug convictions ...

Ya want to bet that he was running a Meth lab out of the house?

As far as it goes, as a convicted criminal, it was illegal for him to own a firearm. It is very naive of folks to think that taking away law abiding Americans right to own arms will affect the criminal`s ability to obtain weapons.

To support that argument; I would like to remind you that the failed "war on drugs" has done little to stop the Billions of dollars worth of drugs from coming across the borders and the efforts of the INS have done little to stop 5 million of illegals either.

But I get what katman is saying.
If you were robbed and shot, you would get some kind of home security. Whether it be electronic call the cops wait 20 hours for them to get there, or a gun.
An AK47 might be overkill, but a simple handgun would suffice.
How a con got a gun is something else.

Gun control is not a bad thing. Sure it goes against the "Right to bare arms" amendment, but that was written in the times where it took 5 minutes to reload between shots, so domestic killings happened very seldom.
