Here"s how you get that free extra seat.... (I-A-B, is this fair?)

blet, they are taking another seat that someone else could have used to get to that particular destination. i think they should compensate the airlines (and in a way the other person) for that one less passenger.

Alright, so do healthy people get 1st class tickets at half price? I can understand if you have a medical condition that you can`t control, but come on, just because you can`t put down a freaking cheeseburger?

If you think about it, which would you prefer, letting the fat people have their two seats and just not worrying about it, or trying to squeeze yourself in bewteen their giant mamba jamba rolls while they try and mold themselves into one seat? I say just let them alone.

If they have enough money to chow down on all that food, they have enough to buy two tickets.

Hmm i dont think they should pay prices of 2 seats, because thats alot of money... depending where you go. But it shouldnt be 1 seat fare either, not fair to the companies. The fat people should pay for 1 and a half seats for the 2... only thing i can think of

Duckboy..what do you have as evidence that I don`t support capitalism? Making airline seats smaller and smaller over the years then charging people extra if they don`t fit in those seats is your idea of capialism? Citigroup laying off 52,000 people and looking at a poor future yet giving their top executives massive bonuses is your idea of capitalism? You sir, are a traitor and the worst America has to offer. Get out. Leave.

If they have a real condition that causes obesity then I agree with the courts ruling. All the `self-made` fat folks should be shipped by train and truck if they need two seats.

I will accept that you insulted me because you dislike what I say- but I will add on to that saying the only reason you feel the need to insult me, rather than post a valid argument against me, is that you are too pathetic and caught up in yourself to do anything but make lame insults.

On another note ROFLMFAO (seriously that one suits what I did best)

Heehee I am not sure I got my point across as clearly as I wanted... I ran out of characters. :) My point is, It`s your fault you`re fat, your fault you are miserable and no one else`s... The only excuse I would accept for fatness would be that the person is paralyzed from the neck down and they were force fed. Malignant tumors are also acceptable.... but only really huge ones.

Try being an obese 2nd, 5th, 6th, 7th grader. Even freshmen in high school are abused. If you haven`t gone through it, you don`t understand what you can go through. Any weird noise when you walk somewhere, any fabric tearing, is blamed on your obesity, even if it`s something normal.

No, there`s a huge difference - we smokers pay for our habit. A packet of smokes costs $14 in AU, of which over $8 is government tax to pay for medical and hospital care for the sick. We might be stupid for smoking, but we`re paying our own way right through to the grave in the enormous taxes we pay on ciggies.

I seriously think this is a stupid ruling, the airline contracts with a passenger to carry them from A to B so on the face of it, it seems fair that they then have to provide seating arrangements big enough for the person as part of that contract. But legislating it opens a huge can of worms legally - will taxi`s and busses now charge fat people more because the vehicle uses more fuel? McDonalds charge more because it requires extra toilet cleaning when they use the facilities? Will they pay extra council taxes for causing more than average wear and tear on pavement? Cruise ships charge more because more water is displaced therefore more fuel needed to move? Sure this airline decision is a "victory" for the fat, but the rules and regulations that could come about as a result, to protect any service provider and make sure of a "user pays" system, may eventually make it a huge backfire.

Fat people are, well, bigger. They take up more space. Maybe, because it`s company policy, people should get a discount on a second seat if they are too big for one. However, don`t try to treat bigger people the same because they aren`t.

Shadowspirt, my sister gained weight because of a medical disorder in the past few months. It wasn`t a lot, so I didn`t automatically relate it to this, but it was enough to make her feel uncomfortable. I didn`t even realize that when I first read this D: Thanks for bringing that up!

Male 527
Sure I think it`s fair.
At least to the people who have a disorder that makes it hard for them to control their weight. Believe it or not you don`t just become overweight by watch t.v all day and eating little debbie cakes. There is medicines that been known to make people overweight and tons of disorders and such. Those people who can`t help it or have trouble keeping a average for those reasons should not have to pay double.
Now if it can be proven that someone just got fat by just being lazy I guess they could pay double. But in would just be easier if it was for everyone who was overweight.
Also the extra seat should be provided from request only.
Also they are in canadan so it makes sense. I`m not saying that everyone there is fat but it`s colder up there and fat keeps you warm so it`s not really a negetive thing. In some cases being over the advage weight does not mean you are unnaturally fat or not heathy.

I don`t see that much of a problem with it. It must be really embarrassing to have to take up two seats, anyway; paying for both would be worse.

It costs American airlines (collectively) about 300 million dollars a year to carry the excess weight of people. That`s just through the average weight rising by about 8 pound.

They raise airfares to remain profitable.

If you take up two seats, pay for two seats. If you`re too big for one seat, and don`t want to pay for two, no flying. What ever happened to companies having the right to refuse?

It`s all about the discrimination right?
With factors like race, height, etc. You don`t choose, with obesity, I want to talk to your doctor before I admit you had no choice.

If your decisions in life cost the airline twice as much to transport you, one fare doesn`t cover it, they move you at a loss, they should say no.

if they take up more than two seats, the airline has the right to show the in-flight movie on their ass.

You can only take off with so much luggage and so many people because there are only so many seats and the plane has a takeoff weight limit.

I`ll side with the airlines though. Fat people should pay more because its all about weight.

Anyway, if you`ve got to pay more for luggage, just take some of it with you into the cabin.

I`d rather them get a free seat that I don`t have to sit in, than not have them pay for the extra seat that I paid to sit in, and have them sit in it with me. (Disclosure: I`m considered obese at 260/ 5`10", and I do take up my entire coach seat. I don`t, however, require two seats--yet.)

I think the overall comfort of other passengers is being considered here. Face, it, if that man had been able to pay for one seat but gotten two, my mom wouldn`t have had to endure a 2 hour flight with his excess body weight falling on her.

For that reason, I`m okay with this. Obese people will not lose weight to avoid paying extra on a flight.

I agree with you. If these people don`t have the money for an extra seat, then what`s the problem?

If my luggage weights more than the included allows I have to pay more, around £2.50 per Kg I think, some of these people who need two seats weight x times as much as I do, maybe in the region of 50Kg or more! Do they pay extra, NO. so why on earth should I have to pay extra for my luggage?
That’s the problem I have with over weight people on planes, at the end of the day, that weight costs fuel to lift and move.

I have no sympathy for fat people. They always blame their problems on other things and never take the responsibility. My mom was overweight and she decided she wanted to do something about it. So even though she was working THREE JOBS she exercised like hell and lost 50 pounds, without pills or some random crap.

Obesity is a choice, except for the extremely small sliver of people who have a glandular problem. One of my best friends has this problem, but he is fit, because he knows how to deal with it responsibly, not use it as an excuse to eat tremendous amounts of food.

I mean surely there`s diseases that cause obesity, but if you just straight up cannot put a hamburger down, there should be no pity for you.

RyanF701 - "if you`re fat and it`s your fault, I hate you."

Those are quite strong words, Ryan. I am overweight, and it is my fault, and I take responsibility for it. I am not asking for any special treatment.

The truth is, as an overweight person, while I appreciate this ruling, I do not think it is fair. I actually haven`t flown in several years because I don`t fit in one seat. When I have been forced to fly, I end up hanging over the side of the seat onto the person next to me, and that is blatantly unfair to them. I feel horrible about it.

Skyira - "but the thing is that I`m sick and tired of hearing fat people complain that there fat".

There was a guy who lost weight by clapping his hands until he lost enough to walk and then continued losing weight. NO one has an excuse... I think they should have to pay for as many seats as they take up- the airline loses money. They could always make a rule saying obese people who are getting a free seat have to book a flight that will have extra seats- like a midnight flight or something. I HATE fat people that just complain... Do something about it already! -grrrr- Stories like this just set me off.

I also hate it when my mom is at a store trying to get an electric cart so she can get around- but there aren`t any so she has to walk.... and there are a bunch of fat ladies in electric carts just talking and laughing..... Why don`t they have a row of handicapped accessible seats like buses have? You know, the sideways facing seats at the front of the bus? Then if there is a physically disabled person, or an obese fatso, that person gets one of the disabled seats. But, if there is no disabled person on the flight, then anyone can sit there.

Then again, I`m also the one who says you should have to be over 6` feet tall to sit in the exit row, since the exit rows are wider than all the other rows on the plane. I`m 6`1" and I always sit in the exit row when I can, so that my knees aren`t squashed into my chest, but every now and then I see a 6`4" or 6`5" guy and I say "you need to sit here more than I do" and give up my seat.

Airplane seats are too damn small for me, and I consider myself average sized. Can`t imagine how tight it must be for an obese fatso. So, rather than giving them two seats, HOW ABOUT MAKING THE SEATS BIGGER for everybody?

In it they quote a woman who has polycystic ovary syndrome, an incurable condition that can lead to obesity. (I note that it does say can, not will, but at least when you have evidence like that it backs up your claim.)
--------

Just making a point, most women I know who have PCOS are overweight, and are overweight because of it. I just found out that I, myself, could possibly have it and...I`m overweight too! My friend was skinny her entire life and then gained a bunch of weight because of it..it sucks. But there`s medicine you can take that can help you lose weight, so theres really no excuse for being obscenely overweight no matter what condition you have. You can be overweight and still be healthy, it`s possible and there`s no reason for you to get to the point where you can hardly breathe/walk.

Why are obscenely fat people wanting to travel anyway? Wouldn`t that require them to get off their asses?

that`s dumb. you`re basically paying for the seats not the number of people who are getting on the plane. of course, it just so happens that it`s 1 person per seat. but if you take up 2 seats then you are going to have to pay for the 2 seats. if you are THAT fat to take up two seats, people should not cater to you. lose the freaking weight! it may be difficult, but you`re a loser if you can`t handle it. and i`m speaking from experience. i got tired of being fat and so i began watching what i ate and exercising. diet is what you eat normally. not skimping on meals just for a short while. why else do you go to the zoo and on a information board for the creature it goes "diet." stop going to fast food joints. stop eating just because you`re bored or sad or depressed. you don`t need a box of donuts to be full. eat in moderation. get up and walk. a 10 minute walk. ok i`m done ranting.

unless the doctor drats up your metabolism and makes you take medication that will make you fat and makes you have a high risk of diabetes then go ahead get the privileges.

but the thing is that I`m sick and tired of hearing fat people complain that there fat and not doing a single thing about there diet and there exercising habit, go do something about it, give up the sodas the junk foods the disgusting large amount of food that`s on the plate...ether you do something about the way you look or you stop complaining. jesum.....

OK, being obese is not healthy. not at all. Why do we provide obese people things to, sort of, promote sympathy for them? What we should be doing is passing out fliers and informing them that it is unhealthy. We should not be giving them royalties, we oughta be telling them to get a on freaking treadmill instead of a plane first.

On another note I think they should be made to buy two seats if they are large.

This is not a matter of whether you can help you are fat or not. The matter is whether the government should enforce this kind of atrocity: using force to make the airlines do what the government wants them to.

This is ridiculous. Obese people should have to pay for two seats. I have no respect for obese people because I use to be obese myself and was able to get back to a controlled weight. It just comes down to laziness.

Yeah, this is ridiculous. Nobody should get free seats on planes. If you need to travel that badly, even though you`re hugely fat, take a boat or something. Even if you have a legitimate medical condition that makes it easier to gain weight, it is STILL possible to lose it. I still think it`s funny that it`s ok to say to a smoker "hey, you know, you`re gonna die of cancer because of that. How stupid are you.", but it`s not pc to say to a fat person, eating a hamburger, "You know, you`re gonna die of obesity, how stupid are you?" Argh.

I do not care if the airlines, of their own free will, give away all the free seats they possibly can without going bankrupt. I am only concerned that the government has to step in to do this. As the last line of my last post said, the government should stay out of it.

Wh-what? In what country does this make sen-oh. Canada.

Well anyway. I could understand and maybe be a little forgiving about it if someone was obese and it was no fault of their own. Like if someone has a thyroid problem or something like that.

But if you`ve just eaten yourself into obesity and you`re gonna tell me that you deserve a free airplane seat because you`ve got absolutely no self-restraint, pfft, that sucks for you, fatty, buy an extra ticket.

NS1020 remember, it`s only in Canadian planes that theyget two seats... and because of thlow population, lots of flights there have free seats, so they are not losing much money, just gettng good publicity from the good sympathetic people...

I don`t agree that insults are an even trade, if they were than we would have every right to insult black people because of affirmative action, because they are exactly the same thing, free things because of how you look. Our country is supposed to be equal not you get free poo cause you`re this or that.

No, it is not fair.

The extra seat that the obese passenger is getting free could have been sold to another person willing to pay for it. The airline companies are losing money because a random person has a condition (whether they can help it or not). The government is using coercion to enforce this non-existent "right", and ironically, is violating the real rights of the individuals in the airline company. That person can choose whether he wants to fly or not. The airline company can choose whether they should reject him, let him ride free, or for only pay for part of the cost. The government should keep their hands out.

ok then, if obese people have the right to an extra seat, i think normal weight (i.e. good bmi) people should have the right to rip the piss out of obese people. that would make it much fairer

Okay I`m fat, and I agree, it`s one thing to be overweight, and it`s another thing to be lazy. I`m overweight and can do everything for myself, I hate when I see fat people in wheelchairs, I`m comfortable with myself, but not enough to just become a useless blob and need a wheelchair and get paid disability cause I can`t stop eating. Ugh, these people give us a bad name, and btw, yes, I`m very cute.

If you don`t pay for two seats, being fat doesn`t give you the right to take them. Or it shouldn`t, at least.

Un-freaking-believable. obese people have the same rights as others, not more rights than them.

Hell no it`s not fair. The reason why the US has so many fat people is because we keep making it easier for them to get along. 95% of the time it is their fault they are fat, and they complain and complain about it but they don`t do poo; you know what comes next? They become so fat they use a wheelchair. Talk about pathetic. I`m sorry, if you`re fat and it`s your fault, I hate you.

Yay, way to encourage obesity!

Now they`re never gonna lose weight, and they`re gonna start demanding rights like homosexuals, it`s gonna become a movement of liberation of some sort!

So I say tell them to hit the gym and THEN fly...

Lol, I can`t believe that, kinda funny though. But does anyone else picture some random GIANT guy walk in and take up like 4 seats now? :D I`m new to comments :P

I`m "functionally disabled" by misanthropy. Shouldn`t I therefore be given a whole row for myself for the price of one seat?

Here`s the link to a story that also references the disabled who require an assistant to fly:

http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2008/11/20/airlines-disabled.html

In it they quote a woman who has polycystic ovary syndrome, an incurable condition that can lead to obesity. (I note that it does say can, not will, but at least when you have evidence like that it backs up your claim.)

Huh, that`s funny, because this appeal was also supposed to deal with all sorts of other disabilities who may need an assistant in order to be able to fly with them. I guess they just used obese people in the news story because the headline sells.

that`s dumb. if you`re really that obese to need 2 seats, you also probably weigh 2 of a regular person. now, if there were 2 people that equal the weight of the fat guy, those two people would pay for (obviously) 2 tickets. it`s not fair to the regular people. they`re pretty much getting a discount for being fat.

Well, if the person has a legitimate medical condition that makes them grow very large and they cannot do anything about it, then, yes I suppose this is fair. But, only if they can prove the condition. Otherwise they can walk their fat ass to whatever poohole they plan on going to. All the while hanging their lazy fat head as people point and snicker. Most people don`t a good excuse for being fat.

No, thats bull sh*t. Like ricky gervais said " if the seats were made to fit you, they would only be able to fit twelve drating seats."

The only reason why it should be ok is if they can use the obese person to cushion the plane`s fall if the plane crashes.
