Dubai`s Hotel Atlantis Grand Opening Ceremony

Submitted by: davymid 8 years ago

This 7-star hotel, costing up to $25000 per night, is built on a custom-made palm-shaped island. Is Dubai the new Vegas?

Can`t they just have one of those "Yes, Were open!" signs that flip over on the front door :P

I stayed at the Atlantis in the Bahamas and I thought it was really cheezy and sort of tacky - all sorts of gaudy salmon-colored plaster rocks everywhere and water slides. I wasn`t impressed.

Actually, none of this was from oil money..

Sol Kerzner financed it. Google him.

And yes to another poster who asked if its related to the one in the bahamas...

Oh! I saw a show on this on one of those educational channels. You cannot believe the amount of work put into this and all the obstacles they had to overcome. I remember they had to figure out how to prevent stagnant water from forming within the palm shape form. I don`t think I stuck around to learn how they did it, but I assume they did if the island`s open to the public.
Gosh, if I had the money.

"wonder how much one night at that place is, almost willing to bet it costs most peoples monthly paycheck."

Ummm, did you even READ the description?

I pay less then $25`000 a year for my flat, which means a room in this hotel should be at least 365 times as good as it. Unfortunately I don`t think thats too hard ^^ *starts saving*

Oh, didn`t see a slavery argument, but while we`re at it:

Shipping work to india/china from the US: Goddamn Chinese/Indians taking our jobs.
Using Indians/Chinese to work on Dubai buildings: Goddamn Arabs abusing Chinese/Indians.

Yeah, no hypocrisy there, it`s always other people`s fault. I get it. No, no, no, I don`t think you`re doing anything wrong at all, but I agree that we, not you, when doing the exact same thing, are real bastards for doing it.

No really. No sarcasm here at all.

I want to go there so badly.

I find it very ironic that many people complain about the opulence of rich people. Well frankly, it is their money let them spend it how they damn well please. I mean I may not have a nice car, and my furniture is mediocre, but I have a fancy $140 seafood feast every other week. Why? because I like seafood, that`s why, you may call me stupid, but I have set my priorities.

As for a crash, I hope I can make it there before a crash happens, if one happens at all.

And as for slavery, I have few objections to slavery. Thats why I shop at walmart, i mean that they use slaves is tragic, but where else can I get a week`s worth of shirts for the price of a cup of coffee or a pack of cigarettes?

Sorry finally, in pre-emptive response to "Abu Dhabi is not a country it`s an Emirate", yes that`s true. Well done. Treat yourself to a cookie. :P

Finally, in addition for crash information:
Dubai is over leveraged, and has a lot of the problems the US (and the rest of the world) is having, however, we also have Abu Dhabi (which incidentally *is* an oil rich country) whose economy is extremely strong, has plenty of liquidity, and who just lost a *lot* of money on the US.

It has a vested interest in propping up Dubai, has already agreed to give large funds to prevent any serious economic repurcussions, and has shown interest in buying up assets that are currently in Debt in order to bail out Dubai.

Just in case anyone is interested.

ElDavo: Dubai never had 80% of the world`s cranes, it did however have 25% of the world`s cranes.

Sam 8380: Guy with drugs on his shoe released. Most countries have bizarre customs (nail clippers anyone? I got stopped in MIAMI for having too much chocolate). As for things to do: Wadi, gold souk, dhow rides, tour bus, atlantis, tallest building in the world, world`s biggest mall, dune bashing, sand surfing, skiing (in the world largest indoor ski slope), the beach, windsurfing, car racing at the autodrome, DR7s coming up, concerts, coming soon: world`s largest theme park twice the size of Hong Kong.

So a couple of things actually.

MrPopnfresh: Oil? Dubai only gets 6% of it`s money from oil. The rest comes from stuff like this.

Everyone who mentioned a Crash: The real estate sector here is the big issue, and we *need* a crash to regulate prices. Everyone has been saying it since 2000.

IceKatana: The fireworks show cost $20m.... maybe the whole show cost 182 or something, but I have no idea where you got that number.

Yay for my hometown.

Eichenkatze > yeah, I totally agree. Dubai`s days were numbered from the start, such extreme opulence can only last so long. I just hope it lasts long enough to make a few more landmarks.

whoa. They went a lil` overboard with the fireworks. Its only a hotel, not the god damned olympics. I`d like to see what they do to the burj.

I still believe that Dubai`s over ambitiousness will lead to their doom...

---

I`d have to agree. The greatest things always have short spans. Dubai will go from this rich amazing place of what feels like a piece of desert heaven, but will eventually rot from the head. Those who control it will begin to fight and cheat one another, and from there only a matter of time..

BUT for now; they have awesome shows!

neat...not sure what there actually is to do in dubai, apart from go to the beach and er...sit in the desert. oh, and you can get jailed by customs for having codeine on you, and poppy seeds from a bread roll, or minute quantities of drugs you picked up in your shoe....ok, suddenly miami looks more appealing...

Las Vegas has nothing on Dubai. Rich oil magnates throwing their money? Check. Gross overindulgence in luxuries? Check. Hot weather? Check. Economy who will probably work better than the U,S. in a couple years? Check.

Dubai is gonna be king of the world.

Wow. I have lived in Vegas for 37 years and even I don`t see this regularly. You must have only visited the old-folks brothel on a ranch or something. The Las Vegas Strip I see is nothing like how you just described it!

Um many of you have it wrong. I`ve lived in Dubai for 11 years now and have stayed at both the Burj Al Arab as well as the new Atlantis, and to be honest, Atlantis IS a 7 star hotel and is better than the Burj in many way.

There are 7 stars in fact and are extremely rare to give out. The very fact that the committee hasn`t given any 7 star ratings to a hotel in Las Vegas and has to 3 in the UAE says a lot about the quality of the hotels.

And the whole issue of public displays of affection and drinking and gambling is very exaggerated by some people here. Bare feet ban? Never heard of it or seen it. In fact, most people would LIKE some of the crowd here to wear some more clothes than they do now.

Alcohol consumption is massive here, you should visit any of the thousands of pubs around town. And yeah, prostitution here is rampant.

Was there for the launch btw, the fireworks were ALL real, no special effects and stuff.

It really is incredible there, although I wouldn`t say it`s Vegas just yet
And like zoneking said, gambling is illegal, as well as drinking outside of designated places, and even public shows of affection and showing bare feet is strongly frowned upon and can get you fined sometimes

Dubai is amazing, from a baren industrial pit stop to one of the worlds most entertaining places, Dubai will have to become the new Las Vegas! Dubai will even have and indoor mountain for skiing and snowboarding, another hotel which will be under water, its own amusement park, and not to mention hundreds of concept ideas such as spinning sky scrapers and the tallest building ever!

If this city becomes what it is said to be, then this place IS the new Las Vegas.

was that really necesary!?
first there was super awesome james bond music, and then the other half was topped off with a bit of star wars, and the finale, too much raw power used at one time.
btw those fireworks sucked.

And people call Americans wasteful with energy. Dubai could do so much with all their GDP, but they waste it on ridiculously expensive and high-class resorts.

Just wait until the oil peak, the UAB will turn into a poohole.

swissnipsUK: Dubai is many things, but `beautiful` is not one of them, unless your idea of beauty is soulless skyscrapers build in the middle of the desert by bangladeshi virtual slaves. and there is probably MORE prositution in dubai than in vegas--or dont you find it odd that there`s an airbus full of young women arriving from kiev every day? here`s a hint: they`re not there for the culture.
