now all we need is some scientists to discover a way for a person to do this then discover that 20 years from now the people with the adaptation have some form of abnormality where the adaptation has mutated and we can have the super hero "glowstick" :D the worlds most pointless super hero all he can do is direct traffic and help old people home in the dark

This is easy to explain;

This type of shrimp lives extremely deep in the worlds oceans; much like the angler (the fish from Finding Nemo with the light on a little `branch`-like appendage) where the fish see via Ultra-violet light and some more visible to us. Shooting out a black ink jet in the depths of the ocean would do nothing, as black only obscures the visible portion of the spectrum we see. Under Ultra-violet the cloud wouldn`t even be seen, so thus the shrimp has evolved to react with UV light so that when it`s being chased it sputs out this UV reactive ink and thus blinds the light-sensative eyes of their prey.

So yes; They exist. (and google confirms)

Hmmmmm...I would like to see a page that explains about the phosphorescent blue cloud producing shrimp, that isn`t simply a link to that same video. To be honest, I still haven`t seen anything else about this shrimp, other then this video...

I guess that could potentially blind extremely photosensitive bottom of the sea bad guys.
0

Male 292
VV It`s a distraction in low light (like at the bottom of the ocean). The shrimp didn`t escape because the guy was holding it.

oh that`s awesome.
don`t really get how that`s helpful though, when it comes to predators.

HA. I just squirted ur face. let`s see you eat me now.

The biggest reason I wouldn`t be willing to call fake is:

It`s from Japan. Japan doesn`t fake anything, they just do it.

On topic, I want one as a pet now. Actually, I want a whole bunch, so I can stick them in a jar and use them as a flashlight.

It`s indeed real, it`s a phenomenon known as Chemiluminescence, or Bioluminescence when the body of the organism emits the light. more information can be found on wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemilumine...

Even without Googling one shouldn`t be so quick to deny that it`s real. I mean it`s true that we still have lots of undiscovered species in the deepest parts of the ocean, so you never know what really does exist.

There was something about this on blue planet, it lives in the darkest parts of the ocean and the blue sticky fluid gets stuck to the predator and confuses it long enough for the shrimp to escape. Not fake.

Not fake, I`ve seen this in the wild, in Thailand. It`s nuts. It`s a photoluminescent phosphate compound which they expel to confuse predators.

Yeah, like s0rd3dvis1on said, but without Every Single Word In Caps.

There`s a deep-sea squid that does the same thing, so this is at least plausible.

i call fake its just too cool
also here you go

The Smooth Nylon Shrimp (Heterocarpus Laevigatus) Which Lives In The Depths Of The Pacific Ocean, Has An Amazing Method For Self Defense. When Its Cornered, Or Feels Threatened, It Squirts This Bioluminescent Blue Fluid Out Of Its Mouth, And Though Looks Nice To Us, Its Used To Blind Its Attacker So They Can Escape. They Are A Rare Sight.
