I feel so bad for transsexuals. They have to live with so much ridicule from people. My aunt knew a guy who was tran and he was so freakin awesome! Did awesome make-up too. :-) Not trying to sterotype here but I have noticed that gay guys and transsexuals really do seem to be better at hair and make-up then most girls. I`d love to get a make-over by one XD

About The actual article though I find it interestingto say the least but I don`t really care. So what if they find a "transsexual" gene? What are they gonne try to "cure" it? While I do believe that everything has some scientific basis to it I have a different belief about how and why people are transsexual.

It wont be happening again and it was completly unlike me to act like that. So im sorry Gothic, you seem like a nice girl, and you didn`t deserve that, everything i said was way harsh, and i feel like an arse for it. Sorry, again.

Screw it. Get on HRT anyway - Premarin (the purple ones, yellow isn`t strong enough) and an androgen blocker like aldactone. Save your money for electrolysis, that`s the single most expensive part of it. Get a corset and wear it 24/7. Plug a microphone into your computer, download a spectrum analyzer and practice talking.

Codmily said it pretty well. I`d say that we really need a cure for the dreaded "morons who stereotype" gene. It`s doesn`t matter if you`re talking about Christians, Muslims, Italians, women, or trout. To say that everyone in ANY particular group is the same is closed minded and moronic.

wellllll.... I mean... there are also genes that predispose people to illnesses like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and other such things that we deem worthy of being cured...

Just cause a gene predisposes you doesn`t mean it defines you...

It`s more often than not a question of nature AND nurture, really, as you know if you`ve taken a basic psychology course that so much as glosses over development and disorders and whatnot...

    Wow, there`s a surprise.

Codmily, Freddy, I hear you guys, I really do. Blanket-bashing one particular group isn`t really fair, I don`t like it either. But when someone comes out spouting crap on one of these threads (as they always do), in this case directly equating transexuality to a serious mental disease which should be "cured", you can pretty much bet your arse they`re gonna be Christian.

Not saying anything against all Christians, just pointing out that there is a significant proportion of Christians who get away with minority-bashing, and yet it`s somehow taboo to call them out on their bigotry because it`s their "faith". Sickens me.

Lots of examples of hangups in evolution: Sightless eyes, flightless wings, the human appendix. However I don`t define people as "Evolutionarily defective" or "useless."

i think its mother natures way of cutting down the human race...if its true, if there is a "transexual gene" ...maybe evolution is trying to tell us something..

At all.. all im saying, is that by their being a transesual gene, maybe its evolutions defence against the human race.
Its not like evolution can figure out that we have other means of making babies, other than sex...

again, not that i have a problem with their being other ways (i have to pretty much explain everything i say to people who may find this offensive).

That study is totally unsubstantiated. 112 volunteers?

This conclusion does not have enough evidence. I am getting angry with these "Australian researchers" engaging in lame unscientific experiments regarding controversial issues and then jumping to some conclusion.

This kind of stuff needs broad longitudinal studies before it`s taken seriously.

You know, and coming in on this one rather late, homosexuality occurs more frequently in densely populated areas. Large cities, large countries, ect. as opposed to rural areas. It goes back to a theory I have adopted that homosexuality is developed, and that it is more probable that it occurs in an area where sexual difference is more accepted. You could also argue that it is instinct, but as a psychology student, I argue that it has to do with finding acceptance, as positive reinforcement goes on to aide in any behavior. I think that after puberty it is a developed thing, and that it will stay inherent in the person after that said development. Note how in this study they fail to mention any sort of human development, and attribute something solely to genes. Genetic makeup only accounts for about 50% of the psychological make up of an individual, and homosexuality is definitely a psychological trait as much as a physiological trait.

sam111: Actually there is, technically a `violence` gene. Men with trisomy XYY has a high predisposition to be more violent, and they tend to end up in prison for violence.

Of course, this does not mean that people without the gene are not going to be violent, ever, nor does people with the gene will end up in jail. There is simply a correlation between the two.

    Almost like this one.

Just b/c gay people are more visible in urban areas does not mean there are no gay people in rural areas. You might as well say there are no gays living in Iran. (as amadinejhad has) You know they kill them there, negative reinforcement can obscure anything.

Pabasa .... trisomy XYY means that they have an entire extra chromosome and is a mutation that presumably occurs during conception.... hardly a "violence gene". To be a violence gene it would have to be a segment of a chromosome with the possibility of being sent to the next generation... trisomy XYY is like Down`s Syndrome... which isn`t even close to "genetic."

kawawakaba: Yes, you are correct that I used the incorrect term - choromosomal disease is the correct term. And yes, it`s not really something that is inherited.

But I was answering sam111`s query on the violence gene, in that you *can* blame someone`s genetic makeup for being violent, just like you can blame a tranny`s gene for making him a tranny. And in the same stream of thought, it`s not really common for a transvestite to, ya know, bring her gene down a generation.

Terminologies are a b*tch. That`s for sure. People who are for civil unions but against gay marriage are fightin over a frickin word for cryin out loud!

I agree with ya (marry me!)

But then again, civil unions are bounded by law, while marriages are under religion.

Which is ridiculous. Based on the gay western people I met on the internet (and those most vocal on insisting that civil partnership is not enough; need more marriage), most are atheist or agnostic. Stupid, ain`t it?

Definately. Gay Christian is not an oxymoron. Heck, marriage wasn`t even sanctified by the Christian church until 1215 AD! To give civil unions instead of marriages is definately putting them into their own class and is very degrading. It totally makes gays and lesbians 2nd class citizens. The US Supreme Court will make it legal someday, I`m sure of it. The US Supreme Court is the one that had to legalize interracial marriage because so many were opposed to it. Just shows you can`t trust the legislators!

    "*Checks user profile: Christian*

    Wow, there`s a surprise. "

Oh, come now, davymid, I was only being a bit of a punk while bringing up a point that seems perfectly logical to me. At least explain why it isn`t logical without picking on my background. Don`t prejudge me.

I only call myself I christian cause it`s where I`m coming from and I don`t know what else to call myself. I`m still working on my worldview. Probably always will be. I`m really quite flexible.

I was looking at it from a fairly scientific perspective. Not from a religious one.
It wasn`t Christianity that told me nature and nuture are equally important. It was my atheistic psych professor.

Don`t go scouring my user profile for bits of things to try and blow me off with. That`s just hypocritical.

It`s not that anyone needs to be cured. It`s that there`s more to us than strict genetics. That`s why it`s called predisposed, not predecided.

Whoa whoa whoa! Just noticed this part!

"But when someone comes out spouting crap on one of these threads (as they always do) in this case directly equating transexuality to a serious mental disease which should be "cured", you can pretty much bet your arse they`re gonna be Christian. "

Oh, davymid. It wasn`t "they need to be cured"

It was "that a gene exists doesn`t prove that something is not maladaptive because there are things which are also maladaptive which are genetic"

That`s psychology class and logic puzzles talking, not sunday school.

So: that a gene exists doesn`t say one way or the other about whether or not a trait is normal or maladaptive. THAT is the point. That there is no conclusion to be drawn from this discovery.

Religion has no bloody part in it to me. Fallacy it what bugs me.

So tell me why I`m wrong, you who believe so strongly in that which is not empirical. Or are you really just an agnostic and not an atheis

Someone trying to be christian about it would have said something ridiculous like, "Oh, we all have flaws, but genetics are no excuse. You have to fight your human nature and overcome the burdens placed upon you in order to be like Christ!" Which is definitely not what I said, nor is it my opinion.

Sorry about the triple post, but I`m very long winded when my feelings are hurt by false accusations of bigotry.

    I`m done now. Promise.
