Submitted by: littlemissqt 9 years ago in

Newsweek mag used an untouched, close-up photo of Sarah Palin for this week"s cover. Bias or Meh? Here"s the debate...

yeah, I`m definitely agreeing with the notion that it`s a perfectly fine pic. I see no moustache and she looks pretty good, IMO. and they overused the words, "this was a clear slap"

if I was Palin I`d be ticked at all my "defenders" basically calling me a dog.

the only point here is that if you`re going to do it to one person, do it to the other. that`s just common sense. and when has it EVER been a standard practice to put a picture that tight on someone`s face and then print it on a cover without retouching? it`s just stupid and unfair. just read the damn caption. it`s an attempt to make her look plain.

Fox Noise isn`t a saint when it comes to slanting a story with modified pictures. Take a look:

If anything an untouched photo does more than having a retouched one. It shows flaws and portrays honesty. Is this really the most pressing issue?.

This may be one of the most pointless, retarded and sad "features" I`ve ever seen on so-called candidates.

And that, dear people is saying a LOT, considering I find most of these things about as insightful as picking my toenails in a drunken stupor.

This seems to me just a chance for Faux News to complain when McCain/Palin doesn`t win. "Oh, it`s because they showed the flaws in her looks!" No, it will be because Palin loves to show us all the flaws in her miniscule brain.

If they use a natural photo, doesn`t that show the raw and human-like qualities they have instead off focusing on being gilded by lies? And who even cares?

The issue is that it is Presidential race not a beauty contest. I wish that when there was an election no one knew names, faces, race or sex of any candidates, there were only views and issues. I think a lot of people would be surprised who they actually voted for without all the discriminatory factors in play. there would be candidate A and candidate B, who do you more agree with.

i don`t understand why you guys are getting mad at Fox. They gave equal time to both arguements and they were simply addressin an issue that some people seem to think is controversial. I don`t think that you guys should scorn the news channel for addressing the topic.
I can understand how this would be seen offensive. Magazines tend to retouch EVERY picture, and even though I thik that flaws are beautiful, slapping them on the cover of a magazine to sell it seems disrespectful.

We were discussing this in my advertising arts class and went over other magazine covers that the presidental and vp canidits have had and MANY of them has some unflattering photos that weren`t touched up at all. The one they were showing of Obama was not retouched the only touch up was with the haloish light. The idiotic reporters need to do their research before opening up their mouths and letting trash spew from them.

I wont bother you with my own opinion on the subject itself, as I think it`s pretty unimportant if somebode got airbrushed on a cover or not, but for me living in Europe and being used to another way of discussions on TV, I am really shocked about one thing:

The blond lady is the host of the show, isn`t she? How on earth is it possible for her to show her own personal opinion (or that of her TV channel) on the matter so clearly?! Shouldn`t she be neutral in her position?

Is it normal in the US to have to get your information from biased TV stations? I mean, it wasn`t just a slight tendency - it was so very obviously, it hurt!

I can`t take into consideration perspectives from people like prime. There are, I`m sure, tons of people on here who are voting McCain/Palin and can agree this "news" story was idiotic. I mean, there is hardly even an argument here, this is not something that any reputable news station should be reporting on!

I do not defend MSNBC every chance I get and I wouldn`t because I do think they have a bias. At least I can admit this and take that into consideration every time I watch anything on that channel, which is hardly ever.

You have to realize what news shows and channels have some sort of bias which is important to know because it is what is motivating their stories. Fox News is usually motivated to make liberals look bad and conservatives good, vice versa for MSNBC! They solely brought up this "issue" for that purpose I just explained.

I can`t take anyone seriously here who defends tactics like this from news stations.

As opposed to the liberal media that loves to demonize fox news.

Whats the difference?

The funny thing is most people here are talking about it being how people really look and no one should be upset that they didn`t "fake" her.

Then most of the people here go out to party`s in brand named clothing and dont leave the house without make-up. Face it, we`re all self-conscious

Having to retouch it as little as possible and she still looks this beautiful is amazing. Also, this photo WAS retouched slightly. If they did it so much to the point where you didn`t see pours it would look so fake since it is such a close up shot.

Fox easily could`ve just said how amazing this was to show this women in real light and how beautiful she still looked. But they love to demonize the liberal media!

If you can`t keep your 17 year old from getting pregant, you probably can`t handle the VP position. She actually thinks she will see Jesus in her lifetime. Maybe more prayer will clear up her facial hair and black heads. Tina Fey is much hotter and shouldn`t lower herself to this.

Baalthazag is right - it`s things like this that can make or break a politicians hopes. The magazine is just playing on the prejudices of the people. Newsweek is not slamming Palin by posting a natural picture of her, it`s the judgemental general public who do that themselves. This cover could have gone two ways in the public eye.

It`s quite ironic that Fox has taken this slant on the story, broadcasting their own prejudices to lots of people who may not have come to that conclusion themselves. There are those who may have seen this frank photo and though `huh, I guess she`s honest and upfront, open and brave` instead of `oh yuk, I can see her pores, what a hag`.

Way to go Fox for making up people`s minds before they had the chance to make up their own minds.

The real issue is that Newsweek wants to make the fact that "she`s one of the folks" a problem. They clearly say that in the title. Newsweek cleverly use the untouched photo to highlight the fact that she is "one of the folks". Obama fans would be livid if a maganize were to make an untoched closeup cover of Obama.

The only issue I guess is that they had retouched Barack Obama in his cover and not Sarah Palin...it almost seems as though they were trying to make her look bad...but I personally think she still looks just fine. It`s because only stupid little girls are so self-absorbed and so narrow-minded that all they care about is how "WOMEN" are represented. WOMEN are mature enough to not wear either their emotions or their politics on their sleeves. WOMEN are mature enough to be able to speak about what they believe without throwing a tantrum or being overly theatrical. WOMEN are a dying breed.

For drat`s christ. These are the same "women" who bitch and whine about how Playboy pics are so touched-up that they`re "unnatural." Boo dratING hoo. So now they DEMAND touching up of photos, simply because there`s a woman involved? And just to weigh in, Sarah Palin is not attractive at all, no matter how close the camera gets. She looks like a mule and sounds like an idiot. "Well for gosh darnit heck..."

-Palin`s cover: I see wrinkles, freckles, pores, foundation/powder, and yes... a little bit of what appears to be facial hair. You know what? She still looks really pretty (and I`m a hardcore dem, who hardly sees any redeeming qualities in her.)
-Obama`s pic: If you ignore the halo lighting, I see pores, wrinkles, freckles, bumps, and stubble.

Oh wow...I didn`t human beings in their 40s were expected to be the epitome of perfection.. guess I`ll be screwed.

The woman on the right was waaaaaaaay too overreactive.

I`m not a fan of Palin, but wow, that woman took this waaaay too far.

So politics is all about looks now... interesting.

And she`s just a running to be vice president. Does that really matter?

No, it does not.

The woman at fox said "normal flaws in a human being"

IF ITS NORMAL, WHY RETOUCH IT?
its not the like results of the election is based on facial hairs or wrinkles that might SWAY the publics` opinions.

Its not like a republican would be a democrat because Palin doesn`t have a perfect face.

"michaelcsr: and if a republican winks wrong, democrats do what...?"

That`s a ridiculous question. We democrats have no double standards....

And look who`s complaining about it:

3 woman television personalities. Their lives revolve looking pretty for the camera. I doubt there`s anything on the face of the planet with a penis who gives a poo about this. Likewise, if McCain had selected a man as his VP and this happens it`s a non issue.

Bias in the media? Sure!
I mean, just look at Fox for example.

I think the core issue I`d like to get back too though, is how both parties suck.

I don`t see anything I wouldn`t expect to see on the face of a woman her age.

Thanks, Ellia.
I honestly don`t see how this is a "slap in the face".
*rubs temples*
If anything I don`t even think it looks half bad.
The hooker on the right made it sound like they drew a mustache on her then took a poo on the cover...then copied it and sent it to everyone.

Thanks ellia. I don`t get it? Palin`s doesn`t even look bad, wrinkles are normal even Obama has wrinkles on his cover. It shows how they really look, I myself don`t like when girls wear tons of make-up, it makes them hide how they should actually look in. Other words they look FAKE if they take out all the NORMAL wrinkles.

Stopped @1:08

Please...people, beauty is fleeting. If you obsess with it, you`ll lose it ever faster.

Is anyone wondering why they aren`t talking about OTHER ISSUES while they`re arguing over some stupid magazine issue that will be in a landfill next month?

Anyone else sense a DISTRACTION going on here?

She`s not running based on looks. If that mattered at all, McCain wouldn`t have been nominated. And you know what? For an untouched picture, Palin doesn`t look half bad.

There goes all those nuns... D:

The bitch says it perfectly "It highlights every imperfection that every human being has" EVERYONE HAS THEM SO THEREFORE...IT DOESN`T MATTER.

She`s running for VP not for another motherdrating beauty pageant you dimwitted idiots.

"It`s mortifying. It`s mortifying" Yeah, it`s so terrible she`s human...it`s SO terrible she has flaws on a cover of a magazine.

Y`know what, I`m probably going to start a flame war for saying this...But I gotta say it:

So many women are blinded by the fact that Palin IS in fact a WOMAN that none of them are paying ANY attention to any of her stats. I swear to you, Look at almost half of the women going "PALIN IS AMAZING"...then ask them what Palin has done that`s beneficial, and how she could benefit the US through VP`ing and possibly ((most likely since McCain`s old ass will probably DIE)) as a President?! And I will tell you now most of them will look at you blankly then go "Shes

As a photographer, I can say this is extremely, extremely unprofessional. I haven`t seen the photo, but if there really are stray moustache hairs, etc., that`s clearly unprofessional of both the photographer and the magazine.

`There are other covers where-
*** Where he looks PERFECT, Julia! PERFECT!

(2 minutes later)

- I should point out we don`t actually know Obama had his photos retouched.

Wow, so then what is your point Fox? We think Palin looks normal, and in this picture Obama looks fuzzy! SCANDAL!

Is it wrong that I wanted to punch the pompous biotch on the far right in the throat? That stupid smirk she kept wearing when all she could REALLY muster up to say was "It`s CLEARLY a slap in the face. The title is proof of that. The title of this is proof that this is clearly a slap in the face." Props for the lady on the left for laughing in her damn face though. Fox is scum.

I think this has less to do with Palin and more to do with the unrealistic expectations of some media services. If I were Palin I`d be more upset at the woman saying that it`s an insult to have my face, as it is, on a magazine. God forbid I have pores.

Ugh.

I find this disgustingly unoffensive, if you will.
