But what about the stupid vegetarians? * points out stupid "friends" *

    This information is pretty cool...
I have noticed that there were a lot more vegetarians when I went to a middle school program meant for intelligent kids.

i`d be a vegetarian if i could afford it.

I`m not shedding out £1.80 for 2 sausage rolls when i go to the shop, when i could get 8 for £0.75

just cannot afford as a student.

oh wells, soon they`ll be growing meat in labs so all will be good.

Well this makes perfect sense. I had an extremely high IQ as a child. I became a vegetarian. That obviously shrunk my brain, `cause now I eat meat again.

See? There is a perfectly reasonable explanation for everything.

its obviously gonna be good for you, naturally you eat more vegetables, and fruit..because there is less choice of food... beans and rice, pasta and so on.
food with high nutrition value and low calorie count, high in iron and all the vitamins...so it makes sense really.

If a smart person wrote the article they`d know that correlation does not imply causation, and thus this argument isn`t an argument at all.

Plus, there seem to be a LOT of missing factors (as it always happens with experiments), including societal impacts (kids who are 30 now would have gone through the 90s and been adults during all the new health fads, implying that they could easily have been swept into vegetarianism as a fad). I don`t buy it, especially since you can probably gather up the brightest minds in the world and find that a majority probably are not vegetarian, in the sense that they take part in eating meat.

Most vegan and strict vegetarians I know are the closed minded ones, thinking that they are some how more noble for not eating meat. Actually believing that it is more ethical to be a vegetarian, I guess up until the last century everyone was just a bunch of asses for eating meat.

AahNold thats just your experience, most of my friends are veggies, and they arnt close minded at all...i was vegetarean for quite a while, but i stopped because i dont live at home anymore, and my parents dont buy my food...guilt..thing, but all i got was hassle and nasty comments from other people about why i would want to, and it doesnt make a difference, and so on... all of the vegetareans ive ever met, are never pushy about it... its the people who eat meat who constantly ask pointless questions, because they dont agree. It should be the persons choice, and thats final...

it really bugs me when people say being veggie is unhealthy...
if anything, its more healthy having limitations to certain foods...it stopped me from eating junk, because almost everything had meat product in it.
and parents dont go "ooooh thats unhealthy" everytime you eat something like chips.. or bacon... people just dont like it when you stand for something like, not eating animals...for some reason it irritates them, i have no idea why...but its so true. my dad made a funny joke cos i said i cant eat anything with a face, and he said.. "what about jellyfish" and then i was like..why would i wanna eat a jellyfish lmao

    Supersai...
Doing it for the poor animals is one of the main reasons people go vegetarian. Other reasons are that people don`t like the taste of meat or health concerns...

And what`s wrong with doing it for animals? Would you like to be hung upside down and break both of your legs, thrown in a paralyzing bath (but miss) and have your throat slit?

Peanuts and soy are good sources of protein, soy makes some people gassy tho. there is no such thing as a complete plant protein, a little fish can take care of that plus you get omega-3 EPA and DHA that are VERY good for your heart.

I love how a lot of vegans are all about saving the planet when, in fact, they are eating the things (plants) that we need to survive and breathe.

But, I feel they were put on this earth for entertainment for the carnivores.

    Stupid vegies...
Most of them are terrorists anyway...
and because of the low level of intelligence caused by smaller brains I will explain:
Terrorists are people who scare or terrorize others as a way to share their own views...

now that we got that out of the way:

Humans are drating mammals, who are animals.
just like dogs are canines, who are mammals who are animals.

Im sick of the inhumane poo
    if human=mammal=animal
    then
    INANIMAL
    OR INANIMANE
    MAKES NO SENSE?
    BECAUSE THERE ISNT SUCH THING.

    Humans are not herbivores.
    Deer and Elephants are
Humans are omnivors, we eat both.
If we didnt NEED TO eat meat then our system would HERBIVORE.
And we woundnt WANT to eat meat... ALL OF US.. not 1% of us...

I am a vegetarian, but an interesting one at that. I am 14 years of age, and in my life, I have eaten four meals containing meat. I can list them: meatloaf, at my aunt Lynnie`s house; chicken nuggets, twice, from McDonald`s; and bacon at the Peabody hotel in Memphis. Before I ate meat those times, my temperature rose, and I became violently nauseous. To add to that, my parents both eat meat, and wish I would. I was actually diagnosed with acute carnephobia (irrational fear of meat) by a professional psychologist. I actually get dizzy while my blood pressure drops if I am even near meat. I don`t eat food that touched meat. I also go to Pine View School for the Gifted, which has an IQ requirement of 130. So I am, from a legal perspective, smart. So it seems that, at least in my case, it is ridiculous to say it is unnatural to be a vegetarian. I was born with a certain mind, one that is both efficient, and wary of meat. Thanks for reading.

"Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet." -Albert Einstein.

I usually don`t post at all, because I think a lot of people are morons, but do your research before you think vegetarianism is bad.

I myself have been a vegetarian for almost a year now, and I know that my diet is much better than my vegan friends` diets. They snack on junk food all day. I became a vegetarian for health, the environment, and because I don`t think that we have the right to take the lives of animals when there are plenty of other means of feeding ourselves. Animals are friends, not food.

If nature intended for us to eat meat, why are are we so slow, weak, and lack claws teeth or other means of killing things by ourselves? Why do we have more molar-like teeth than dagger-like teeth? We have capabilities to eat meat in harder times(harsh winters, drought, etc) but clearly, that wasn`t our intended purpose.

keith2: You have no idea what you`re talking about, or maybe it`s just sarcasm. A proper vegetarian/vegan diet is much healthier if people balance it out carefully and vegetarians/vegans are most likely to live to an old age.

I`ve been vegetarian for around 4-5 years and am loving it, seeing meat makes me feel queasy and sick. Your post is interesting, landfritter. :-)

Something that got to me was

`33.6 percent said they were vegetarian but also ate fish or chicken` -- you aren`t technically a vegetarian if you eat fish or chicken so I don`t know why it`s included with the vegetarian/vegan group.

Scientists have also discovered a direct link between people who are pretentious and annoying snobs and vegetarianism.

And yeah, like Lapin said: If you eat fish or chicken, you`re NOT a vegetarian.

worst thing to do is just replace meat with cheese, a lot of my friends got fat for a month doing that.

i became vegetarian without any coaching when i was in high-school, so i probably don`t qualify for the high IQ bit.

Most vegetarians that I`ve met are idiots. Sure, some of them can actually hold an intelligent conversation with me about why they don`t eat meat, which are the ones that give me the "healthy" excuse, but the ones that cry that it`s cruel to animals are the same ones that also eat fish and eggs. How can anyone expect to take these idiots seriously? Grow the f*ck up and eat some dam* meat, treehuggers!

    All these two things prove is this;

You should restrict neither plenty of veggies/fruits NOR meats. As not enough mean causes your brain to shrink after extensive dieting and not enough veggies doesn`t help your brain deform.

There is a reason we humans are OMNIVORES! we require the vitamins from ALL the things on our edible list. Fruits, meats, dairies, vegetables, cereals, and so forth.

People freak out "I`m a vegetarian because eating meat is wrong." Uh- No.. you`re just a stereotypical doltz jumping on the band wagon. Since the dawn of man we have eaten meat. Just as if given the chance animals would consume us. It is natural. In the same we need greens to survive just as much as we need reds

    END. OF. STORY.

That`s weird, another research said that :

"…this study suggests that simply adjusting our diets to consume more vitamin B12 through eating meat, fish, fortified cereals or milk may be something we can easily adjust to prevent brain shrinkage and so perhaps save our memory."

Anna Vogiatzoglou, Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at Oxford University

    Resuming:

    High IQ -> Veggie
    Veggie -> Brain Shrinkage Hazard

People with a high IQ are self destructive???

But, I feel they were put on this earth for entertainment for the carnivores"

People are basically saying, all vegetareans are snobs, and all vegetareans try to force it on others.
I don`t know anyone who has ever done that, ever... all i know is, in the time i was vegetarean, nobody agreed with me, except my vegetarean friends, everyone else told me it was bad for me, that i shouldnt be doing it, that we are meant to eat animals...and so on. When i stopped being vegetarean, everyone else shut up and my veggie friends were supportive of it.
So naturally, it pisses me off that people are generalizing a whole group of people into snobbish arsehats, when my group of veggie friends were actually the only fully understanding ones i had back then...so...
and WHAT exactly IS everyone problem with people who care about animals, seriously... if someone doesnt want to eat an animal because THEY dont agree with it, it is their choice...wtf do you have to do with it, mmm?
leave them alone, its so frustrating trying to make that decision, and it isnt easy eithe

Just wanted to chime in for a sec: Alice, you`re absolutely right, imo. It is really strange that there are so many generalizations and stereotypes about vegetarians. I`ve been veggie for 16 years, I`ve never pushed it on anyone, never called someone a horrible person for consuming meat, I don`t act like an as$hole snob about it - it`s simply something that I do. My brain isn`t shrinking, my bad cholesterol level is incredibly low, good cholesterol level reasonably high, good blood pressure, etc, etc, etc. There is nothing unhealthy about a veg diet as long as you do it correctly - making sure you get all the nutrients you need. There is nothing inherently unhealthy about a diet that contains meat either, as long as you do it correctly as well - monitoring cholesterol and fat intake, etc. I`m sorry if people have had bad experiences with people who are vegetarian, but, please don`t generalize! I don`t try to make meat-eaters feel like poo, and all I ever ask is for the same!

I`m a veggie and all that, not a big deal. But the title of this link is misleading. The title insinuates that vegetarianism increases intelligence. The article however just states that people that were already smart have healthier diets. So the debate is not fair anymore. :-(

" and 33.6 percent said they were vegetarian but also ate fish or chicken." I still don`t understand why people think that eating these types of flesh don`t make you an omnivore.

Well, Backfat, I think it is natural for people to be offended when someone personally attacks them for a choice they`ve made in their lives that hurts no one. This is often the case with vegetarians - as I`m sure you`ve seen from the responses to the last 2 articles on the subject. There are some truly venomous responses to vegetarianism and a great deal of general mockery and stereotyping (both here and IRL). That, I think, is what people get so worked up about; and I think it is perfectly reasonable for them to feel that way.

You know, all I`m going to say in response to that is the following:
I find it hilarious, if disturbing, that vegetarians are all portrayed as these militant, totalitarian snobs who think that they are better than everyone else, and that everyone should follow them and do as they do. Yet, I`ve not seen one statement like that on this board from any of the people who consider themselves vegetarian. Rather, those who are NOT veggie are the ones saying that everyone else is wrong, that we should all conform to their standards, and anyone who does not is foolish at best.
    Very interesting, indeed...

Wow, really? Eating meat combats global warming? Really? Surely you jest. Otherwise you`re forgetting the millions of acres of rain forests being leveled to make way for land to graze cattle to support the beef industry, or the huge quantities of methane being released into the atmosphere by said cattle. If you`re perspective on what it means to live is embodied in the act of eating pig carcass, I pity you. My manhood is in no way threatened by the fact that I subsist on salad and peanut butter. My genitalia doesn`t shrivel because I enjoy veggie burgers and food products that weren`t derived from animal carcasses. If that`s your justification for eating meat, it`s pretty flimsy, and I doubt that all carnivores are as shallow as you. As for the environmental impact of vegetarianism, we don`t eat trees, or subsist on anything that has a broader growing cycle than one year. Anything we eat is a renewable crop that grows again each year. Your logic is nonexistent.

A man is characterized by his actions and not by his choices in diet. You seriously need a moment of self examination if you truly believe that eating bacon and steak makes you a man. Many ignorant destructive idiots have subsisted on meat, and we all know that certain historical figures of ill repute have been vegetarian as well. It`s a dietary choice, and sometimes an ethical choice but it shouldn`t be the single defining characteristic in any person. Get over yourself and go enjoy your bacon, but perhaps you should attempt to defend your behaviour with a little tact and common sense rather than personal attacks and bad grammar. Poorly framed pseudo-science and cursing just makes you look like a fool. When you behave defensively it means that you really do believe that you`re in the wrong, and that you`re compensating.

I`m omnivorous, and always will be, but I`ve been thinking about pork lately... What pigs go through is actually really messed up. They`re more intelligent than cats and dogs and that kind of bugs me. Chickens get abused really badly, too, but how the hell am I supposed to give up KFC? I really just like meat too much. I`d never give up beef because from what I hear, they`re just shot in the head really quickly, and they live on the open range much of the time. Plus I love prime rib... *drools*
