I would sure hate for there to be a black hole while at the same time I was walking on a cat walk with no hand bar because I might accidentally fall off the side while a huge hole eats me alive.

Indeed, and even if a Black Hole did appear, it would be too small to sustain itself... thus collapsing.

"Indeed, and even if a Black Hole did appear, it would be too small to sustain itself... thus collapsing."

If the black hole reaches the size of a ping-pong ball, it can destroy the Earth. But as pointed by mike, there`s a 1 in 50,000,000 chance of that happening. Thus, apocalytic theories are stupid, and just get in the way of scientific progress.

    ...btw, funny video.

Opie mate, you think that`s bad, you should check America`s stance on stem cell research. Waaaay more worrying.

America these days is like a formerly straight-A student with top grades in science, technology and math, that has recently decided (bizarrely) to chuck it all in and go join an Amish community.

    You are right to worry.

Is it just me or is there something profoundly worrying about the machine MOST LIKELY to DESTROY THE WORLD in the last 30 years having at least TWO MAJOR FAILURES so far? Just a week ago the power transformer failed, and now we have parts melting because of poor wiring and spilling 10 tons of helium into its guts - and all this before its properly turned on! Can we really trust that these guys really know what they`re doing and believe them when they say "end of the world" debate is ridiculous?

vv Lionhart, come on mate, relax, I`m sure we`re in good hands. In fact, you probably know this, but some of the top scientists at Cern are Australian. In fact, in a recent interview, when asked about the recent LHC failures and potential to destroy the planet, one of the Australian nuclear physicists assigned to danger assessment was quoted as saying "No worries mate: She`ll be right!"

My fears are allayed right there.

first off, its already broke. -.-
second the worst that would happen with this in a catestrophic failure, (so they say) is a cave in around the collider, and since no one is allowed inside the cave while it is operational, no or few lives would be lost. What is more likely to happen is stranglets.... That would be interesting to see imo.

Yeah Davy, that`s EXACTLY what I`m worried about! You know how "No worries she`ll be right" we Aussies are! Those CERN guys are missing a few kangaroos in their top paddock, without a doubt.
