For my occasion of my official 2000th post I reckon I can just about get away with posting something completely irrelevant and off topic.

So here`s a short poem about love. It attempts to capture the fleeting transcience of being in love with a woman, while relecting the depth of emotion that it stirs in the human soul. It`s no Yeats, so please bear with me.

    *clears throat*

    "I like `em in frills,
    I like `em in lace,
But I like `em the best,
When they sit on my face"

    *bows*

You can also turn brainwashing into a positive thing by reinforcing yourself every morning. Saying I CAN instead of I CAN`T, so try it.

Also, being able to resist peer pressure is a definite solid shield, so don`t ever forget it. Besides, if your friends are calling you weak for not burning yourself with a hot iron, you -really- need a better group of friends...

    And finally, on-topic...

I recognise many of these brain-washing techniques.

    6. Chanting Slogans: Examples- Our father, who art in heaven/Allah a-Akhbar/hare krishna krishna. There are many to choose from.

    5. Slipping Bullpoo Into Your Subconscious: There`s a big beardy sky-fairy who sees everything you do. No, not Santa, the other one.

    4. Controlling What You Watch and Read: Umm, lets go with centuries of oppression of scientific texts this time, culminating in calls for biblical creationism to be taught in public schools by certain crazies, even today in 2008.

    3. Keeping You In Line With Shame: Homosexuality, working on sunday, looking at titty pictures, the list is endless.

    2. Black and White Choices: Everyone of our faith of is going to heaven, every single other human on the planet is going to burn in hell for eternity

    1. "Us vs Them": See above.

    p.s. in other news, I`m deeply anti-religious.

There was this thing in Anthropology last year that I learned, and it was about group think and that type of follow-the-flow mental philosophy. Basically, at this one point in history almost all of our ancestors (really hairy bent over kind) were wiped out. We`re pretty sure that the only ones remaining were groups who had devout followers of one leader. They fought better, they were more aggressive, and they won through sheer team effort. So then, by a Darwinistic kind of view, we`re such good followers and so easily brainwashed because it was genetically beneficial for our species long long ago.

And that was your Anthropology lesson 101 for the day!

You`re lucky, a poem AND a lesson in this comment section. :O

    Davymid:
    Your number 5 is a number 3.

And number 1 is why why being anti religious is just as bad as being religious. It`s exactly the same mentality just placed in a different tribe. It`s the same tribe mentality. It`s the same defensiveness, it`s the reason you seem to feel the need to preach. It`s the problem with religion "Us vs them", and "Us vs them" is present in Atheism too.

Making your group sound elite? Please, is there a more elitist group?

There`s a reason I`ve heard bearded sky fairy (as opposed to bearded sky spook, or something which might be more accurate), it`s because it`s a repeat of something you`ve heard ad nauseum before using the same sounding board techniques your tribe whines about.

In closing, your tribe sucks because ti`s the only one that doesn;t know it has a problem.

Well, I`d better comment while I still can, before Google buys out IAB as has been strongly rumoured by a certain internet user lately. This article is rubbish! How dare you criticize THEM?? "They are good, They are good, They are good, They are good for us!" (Warning: Do Not Read the Following: *** ******** *** ** ******) Hahaha so we are all brainwashed are we? Braiiiiiinwasssshed. Yeah right. Oh yeah we are all DEFINITELY brrrraiiinwashed, ROFL. C`mon, are you a sensible thinking person, or a mindless child-bashing pervert tree-hugger??? ( . Y . ) Any thinking, patriotic American can see that this article is the sort of garbage only a retarded Iraqi would believe!

Hmmm, seems those brainwashing techniques DO work, the above paragraph uses all six methods and I`ve even convinced MYSELF! Oh what I`m not sure... anyway, "They" are not the ones you have to worry about, its "Them" that are the real problem.

    Baalthazaq,

I believe I touched a nerve there. Since you can`t refute any of my statements (apart from apparently insulting my use of a term that I didn`t coin, shame on me), you decided to take the line on atheistic elitism. I must confess, I`ve never really understood why an advocation of rational free-thinking should be considered elitist. I think even you would agree, the very definition of elitism could be summed up in religious dogma, quite succinctly, in a statement such as "The only way to achieve eternal bliss in heaven is by being born again through our Lord Jesus Christ. Anything other than a complete conversion to Christianity at some point in your mortal life will result in your eternal damnation and torture in the fires of hell. Sorry about that, but that`s the rules."

That`s what it boils down to. I know, because I`ve had many deep conversations with Christians (I used to be a hard-core religious, even zealous, Christian myself, for many years), and when you get down to it, yes, that`s the core message. Obviously the Muslims (like yourself) have the same message, but about a different god, as do the Zoroastrians, the Hindus, the Jews, the traditional Chinese animists... I mean, they can`t all be right. Right? One group (who knows which one?) has apparently got it right, and everyone else is f*cked. That, as a concept and an ideal, is absolutely abhorrent to me, and is elitist in the extreme. My way or the highway.

Secondly, on the point of tribalism: I have to respectfully disagree. Let me make it clear that I`m an inclusionist first and foremost, atheist second. In my ideal world-view, tribalism would be completely eradicated. Now while some forms of tribalism (race, nationality) are intrinsic, religion adds another (completely artificial) layer of tribalism, rooted in stone-age mythology, and I strongly feel we`d be better off as a race without it.

Let me give you a very real example (yes, this is genuine, I promise you). I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland, through the height of "The Troubles". In 1985, my father was blown into chunks of charred meat by an IRA car bomb. My father was killed by Catholics because he was a Protestant, nothing more, nothing less. You`ll be aware that "Protestants" and "Catholics" are just slightly different flavours of Christian. They disagree only in the most trivial aspects of religious dogma, such as whether the wine and bread in communion literally or metaphorically transmutes into the flesh and blod of Christ. Silly stuff, really, when you think about it.

Now, here`s the rub. I spoke of the "artificial" tribalism of religion vs the "intrinsic" tribalism of race/nationality. Ask yourself: In a country like Northern Ireland, where people can`t divide themselves on intrinsic grounds (we`re all white-caucasian/celtic-anglosaxon/Christian), how would one side have known who to kill if we didn`t have artificial, anthropogenic labels like "Protestant" and "Catholic"? How would we know who the `enemy` was? The plain answer is, we wouldn`t, and my father (and millions other worldwide) would not have been murdered because of (if not necessarily in the name of) religion.

In conclusion Baal, I believe that religion is complete anathema to an inclusionistic, pacifistic modern human society, and that the world would be a much better place without it. In fact, religion may be just be the greatest threat currently facing our continuation as a species.

I hope you understand and respect my position, as I respect and understand yours.

And yeah, normally I would say such a lengthy rant was out of order, but it`s practically my birthday (2000 post day) so I reckon I can get away with blue murder. Besides, I`m a Mod. Who`s going to ban me, apart from me?

Davy, remember that there are many perfectly viable philosophical positions that do not take a zero sum approach to religious claims(pluralism, process theology) You can`t just say that all religions currently have an exclusivist viewpoint, some do , some don`t.
And even if religion wasn`t a cause for human conflict(even though it is) there are plenty of other things for people to bicker over(water for instance)

True that. Violence is against all Commandments including the 11th. And Christians may be surprised to find that even the Koran is a book of PEACE and tolerance. Most religions advocate peace, humility, respect. The fact is NO person who picks up the sword in the name of religion is truly religious, they are just using religion as an easy excuse to exercise the human nature of violence and warfare. The playwright Bertolt Brecht once wrote (about the death of Hitler):

Don`t rejoice in his death, you men.
For, although the world stood up and stopped the bastard,
The bitch that bore him is in heat again.

...and it always will be, for man is by nature intolerant of all but himself. Sad, but true. Don`t blame religion, because there will always be SOMETHING to fight about.

"Saying as you can`t refute my points"
I wasn`t aware you were making one to refute. Your points don`t make religion wrong anymore than the same techniques make race wrong, or football teams, or countries.

My irk, comes from the final comment "In other news, I`m deeply anti-religious". I take it in the same way as I should take it. The same as "I hate Blacks/Jews/etc".

Religious people, irrespective of how you justify your bias, shouldn`t be prejudged any more for their faith than for the colour of their skin. It`s stupid.

In other news: "religion adds another (completely artificial) layer of tribalism, rooted in stone-age mythology, and I strongly feel we`d be better off as a race without it."

Interesting, you believe that if everyone shared your worldview, that`d be best.

How unique and special to you, I`ve never heard that before from a religious group... oh wait...

Just for the record. While we`re throwing in qualifiers like they matter:

I`ve spent a good few years on Infidels.org debating atheists, back in the days when it was worthwhile.

I`ve been attacked in the UK a good 7 or 8 times for my faith, I`ve had bricks thrown through my window, my dad`s car was trashed, and my mother was attacked, mostly by Atheists.

I was at best Agnostic prior to becoming Muslim, though I`d probably describe myself more as an Atheist.

In conclusion, having a faith or not having a faith, does not change who you are to a degree where you are any more tolerant of anyone else.

The idea that "If the other tribes just go away it`ll all be better" doesn`t apply to race, it doesn`t apply to gender, it doesn`t apply to any other qualifier that divides us, and the same prejudices are at play when you say "If only there was no religion".

I mean seriously, "I hate dem coloured folk, I hope y`all can respect my position as I respect yours".

    No. Just no.

I *married* an Athiest. I don`t care if you are one or not. I`m not trying to convert anyone. I really don`t care what you believe when it comes to religion. That`s not the point, the point is the prejudice.

The point I picked up on is the same point I`d pick up on if you tried "Whites are special", "Straights are special", "Men are special", "Jordanians are special".

My qualm here is with racists, homophobes, sexists, nationalists, etc. Not Whites/Straights/Men/Jordanians.

And in this case, not Atheism, but specifically the elitism that some Atheists spout while defending it as a philosophy rather than a prejudice.

I`m not talking to everyone and neither is he. I`m talking to him and he`s talking to me.

In either case, obviously we read them, or we wouldn`t reply with further long winded gripes. :P

Then again I`m weird like that. Reading before replying an all, I hear it`s not fashionable these days.

"It`s the problem with religion "Us vs them", and "Us vs them" is present in Atheism too."

Not really. Theists want so much for atheism to be a religion. Sad really.

Atheism is not a side. It`s simply the default position. Don`t make it into something it`s not.

Blacks and Jews aren`t harmful. Religion is. That`s the key difference you`re conveniently ignoring.

"I`ve been attacked in the UK a good 7 or 8 times for my faith, I`ve had bricks thrown through my window, my dad`s car was trashed, and my mother was attacked, mostly by Atheists."

I highly doubt a mob of atheists physically attacked religious people. Atheism is not a religion - atheists don`t get together and plan to attack out of spite. That is *theistic* mentality.

You`re completely distorting what I was saying, and you know it. I was pointing out that religion has many ways of brainwashing people (you bet it does), not that religious people are somehow worthy of vehemence.

Yes, I believe the world would be better off without religion. That`s very different from saying "I hate religious people". I`m fully respectful of anyone of any religion, just as I`m respectful of someone who has sexist views. I fundamentally disagree with sexism in any form, but that`s emphatically NOT the same thing as saying "I hate sexists". I don`t understand why that`s difficult to grasp: Conservative Christians use this all the time to defend their anti-homosexual views. "God doesn`t hate gay people, He hates homosexuality". You know the line.

"In conclusion, having a faith or not having a faith, does not change who you are to a degree where you are any more tolerant of anyone else." What? Are you serious? Last time I checked, there`s a fair amount of "intolerance" in religion. There are no atheist suicide bombers. No-one`s planting car bombs in the name of Man Utd. Genocides aren`t carried out in the name of gender. I stand by my point that religious faith is a completely artificial layer of man-made tribalism (very different from gender, race, etc). Look at Iraq, today. If the Sunni Muslims and Shi`ite Muslims didn`t have such artifical labels (slightly different flavours of Islam this time, as a parallel to the Northern Ireland example I gave earlier), how would they know who was the right kind of Muslim to blow up? It`s all bollocks.

"I mean seriously, "I hate dem coloured folk, I hope y`all can respect my position as I respect yours". No. Just no." It`s a real shame that you feel the need to distort this into a personal attack by trying to parody me as some kind of Southern Redneck "I hate Sambo" KKK parody. I thought I was going to get an intelligent debate on our alternate world-views, and I was trying to extend the handshake of mutual respect for each other`s position, and your response was evoke Godwin`s Law. Shame that.

Religion is not inherently harmful. There are plenty of religious people(the majority really) who do not commit genocide, persecutions ect. in the name of religion. There are plenty of religious people who do a lot of good in the name of their faith, Mother Teresa for example. There are governments that take the tack that all religon is nonsense and then forcibly destroy faith within their borders via violence, persecution ect. because "religion is the opiate of the masses." (theist mentality my ass)

Having or not having religion doesn`t make you any better or any worse than anybody else. Both sides are just as capable of producing good people or ass holes. What Baal was talking about is the snide intellectual arrogance of someone like Dawkins who thinks he`s smarter than everyone else b/c he has all the answers and anyone who does`t agree is a mindless peon.

I can barely make it through a Dawkins or Hitchins book b/c of all the smug self satisfaction and condescencion therein. As if the author cannot make it down off his high horse and speak to me like an equal, instead of a serf.
Ultimately I have to say, Baal has you both by the throat on this one.

    this is so stupid...brainwashing...
everyone these days are so scared and paranoid about EVERYTHING that they tend to beleive the hippie generation of conspiracies and false truths about things....GROW UP PPL!!!
OSAMA destroyed the towers (because Clinton didn`t have the balls to assasinate osama during his office so Bush got the blunt end of it; true for those of you who are too young to know what had happened back then!!!)
I do tend to agree (sometimes) that the government isn`t telling the truth about things...but is that reason to hate your country and start burning the good old red white and blue? NO!!!
If you think everyone is out to brainwash you, then crawl under a rock and don`t come out for the rest of your life!!!!

Dammit, I said I wasn`t going to post again, and here I go...

vv "I can barely make it through a Dawkins or Hitchins book b/c of all the smug self satisfaction and condescencion therein."

I find it genuinely impossible to envisage ANY position more smug, self-satisfied and condescending than the following:

"I, along with everyone else of my faith, is going to enjoy eternal bliss in . Everyone else is going to have their eternal soul burn in the fires of damnation. Awfully sorry and all, but that`s how it is. Our faith is the right one, everyone else is wrong. We are `s chosen people. You have your chance to convert to our religion, if you don`t take it, it`s your funeral. I will pray to that you see the light and join us, for the sake of your soul".

    Irony?

That response to religious diversity is not the only one, as previously mentioned there is pluralism, process metaphysics ect.
Atheist critiques of religion are not always wrong, I agree with most of them in fact. But it also seems that many atheists don`t understand the metaphysics behind religion either and to ignore these other benign forms of religiousity is to sentence yourself to the same narrow mindedness that extremists adopt.

I personally love what High Priestess Phyllis Curott has to say on the subject,"Learning from nature we see that it takes a diverse community of interdependant actors to create a healthy ecosystem. Not all pine trees, not all chipmunks.
It doesn`t matter what faith persuasion you are, as long as your practices link you back to the sacred."

Come on, Zira! I don`t take it as an insult at all, in fact I enjoy a reasoned debate as much as the next guy/girl. I think it`s a mark of maturity to be able to have a debate without resorting to insults... Wouldn`t you agree, Baal?

Anyway, just because we (respectfully) disagree with each other on something like religious views, has nothing to do with us getting along as adults, at least I would hope so. Likewise, if we had differing political views, let`s have a good debate and leave it at the door when we`re done. No harm, no foul.

Contrast that with the picture that Baal just painted of me being no different than a jew-hating, n*gg*r-hating KKK fascist. You might see why I`m a bit miffed.

Sigh, ok in one post now in an attempt to bring some of this in line.

My point was that the same prejudices are coming into play here, as come in to play with anyone who is prejudiced against any other group, of course I picked the worst examples, that`s why Godwin`s law exists.

If I said "You`re like an angry Sunderland supporter vs a NU supporter" 90% of the people here would be "Eh?", you would be "and..." and my point would be wasted.

Everyone knows the Nazis, nobody says "So?" to Nazis. Effect: Godwins law exists.

(Also, if you want a serious debate, pehaps don`t open up with a snide comment?
"Saying as my opponent cannot refute my points"
    Appeals to authority:
"I`ve had many deep conversations with Christians and I was one").
    and so on.

Incidentally, Bekll, my wife, my boss, and my best friend all hate Dawkins because he makes Atheists look bad. I don`t think you can call Zira on that.

How can an atheist make atheists look bad? We`re NOT a group! He doesn`t speak for himself as an atheist, but objectively viewing the world and why irrationality doesn`t belong in reality. He explains the science behind evolution.

That`s pretty much it. Of course he`s not the voice for atheists, every atheist has a his/her own opinion about everything because after "lack of belief in god" anything goes for who atheists are!
