Destroyed? Was it half robot?

You can bet that if it were an orca it`d be in a zoo with activists sitting on top of it right now.

we don`t kill starving humans because aid can (and may) be brought to them eventually. a baby whale is a WHOLE other story. They tried to save it, they couldn`t. And like someone said, they aren`t just gunna haul it wherever, because then what? It couldn`t be force fed. It`s too damn big.

And chaitanya, chile = very far from china. I don`t think China would even have the giant pool down the street from what is probly a very crowded harbor area.

the right thing was done. is it sad it had to happen this way? of course it is. I feel bad for the poor thing, but what was done was all that was left to do.

Wounds can solved most of time, with little medical attention. But, illness and lack of nutrition can only be solved if you have enough money. Still, they can`t throw the baby whale in the back of a truck and haul it to a pool. And i`m assuming that HUGE nice pool behind a hotel is used for human swimming purposes. Which means, chlorine and other chemicals. Which would not be a option.
I would be sickened though if they did some how manage to fully feed a baby whale, transport it, and keep it alive. We don`t even give that much care to humanity itself.

you wouldnt say the same for a starving person thats suffering from wounds, illness and lack of nutrition. they would probably give him/her the best health care in the world try to make them better. they should have tried. meds, food, milk anything. they didnt try to get the long way. they tried all the easy ways. take it back to the sea, kill it. not stuff like take it to a pool, feed it. and yes there are pools big enough. there is a pool in chile right next to the beach thats a kilometer long.
here it is.

that could fit a hundred whales. blue whales. full grown blue whales. this is mean. they could have even left it. they dont have to step in to satisfy their craving for killing.

A baby whale that WON`T go out to sea to try and a find mother, will not adapt. It`s not as simple as throwing this whale into the back of a truck and hauling it to a zoo and throwing it into a wal-mart pool. It was dying from wounds, illness, and lack of nutrition. There was no zoo down the street or a truck made to haul a damn whale everywhere it wanted to go. It`s a whale, it`s dead, no one really cares.

if it was a human, you wouldnt kill him/her even if he/she was gonna die. would you kill a little boy in africa thats in the middle of the desert and has no family and is starving to death? AND this whale has endured his mother leaving him, being ill, shark attacks, and being killed. which is just the meanest thing to do. I KNOW THEY WOULDNT KILL HUMANS. why try to do everything the humane way when you can make it bettet? they could put it with another whale at a zoo. and they never said it was a blue whale. the dwarf sperm whale is so small it can grow up to be 8 feet. do any of you know which whale this was before saying this was a good way to kill it?

It`s a friggin` whale!! You cannot put it in a pool. Starve to death, get eaten alive by sharks, or out it to sleep gently. The decision is easy. Devastating for those that tried to save it, sad for us armchair commentators, but in the end the right choice.

"watch it die slowly trying to get milk from a boat or let it die fast and (probably) painlessly. i never understand the people who say animals should be taken in to captivity and kept alive in situations like this. it would be like torturing the thing to keep it alive. you want to watch a baby whale slowly starve to death? what the hell kind of kindness is that?"

The same thing could be said about people that suffer daily from incurable diseases. People that are in so much pain that they would be better off dead. Lots of them even want to die but can`t bring themselves to do it.

So the question is: was there another solution to this problem?

As it turns out - NO!!! There ISN`T.

Seriously people, go read a book or something! You just might learn something that way. You can`t just force feed a whale like you would a cat or simply put it in a zoo and hope for the best.

Face the facts people- nature is brutal and uncompromising.

This whale got lost from its mother and began to try to suckle from a bunch of boats. If humans didn`t act the whale would have died a slow and agonizing death from starvation.

There`s no use getting upset over these sorts of things, because nature is all about survival of the fittest. Just one mistake can be a matter of life and death in the wild.

OR, you could put it in a zoo and feed it every 5 minutes.

See the thing is that if they kept it alive it would starve because NO ONE can manufacture in a zoo or aquarium so much milk that it needs. I think this was the right thing to do.

Was that a 13 year old whale activist? What`s wrong with that kid ...... ANYWAYS, why does everyone keep saying "Destroy. Humanely" Did you want them to stick dynamite down it`s throat and ACTUALLY destroy it? Would of been more cost effective IMO.

Poor little guy, he had a tough life D:

But I would rather it be put out of it`s suffering quickly versus having tubes shoved down its throat and just making it very stressful for it and then just having it dying.

I also thought it was funny how that woman was talking about it like it was a rapid animal. "it had to be DESTROYED!! Humanly."

ya take the thing to a zoo and force feed it. that wont be a living hell for the animal. anyone seen the episode of dirty jobs were whats his face goes to a place were they help seals that are injured? they force feed them by sticking a hose down its throat and poring the food in. the same basic method would be used to force feed a baby whale. i hope anyone who thinks its a good idea to keep anything alive in that way experiences what they are willing to put a animal thru so they can pretend they live in a happy world were nothing ever dies.

> I`m sure there was a better way to handle it.

As usual, you don`t know the full story. Hundreds of people have worked for 3 weeks to try many, many options. Everything has been tried, and failed - the whale was just too young and kept returning to the boats when removed to suckle at them. This has cost taxpayers millions so far in `clever` attempts to help the whale, and this really was the only option left. OK, so YOU think its sad... what do you think the people who have devoted the last 3 weeks 24/7 to trying to help the whale think about it? And yet they were left with no other choice...

And ThePom - you live in the wrong place mate... there isn`t a yacht on Sydney Harbour that DOESN`T have a bonza display of nipples...

Wouldn`t have made it to an enclosure? They had a week to decide, that`s plenty of time. I`m not for saving every little creature, but the only thing that was apparently gained from this was unspent money and labor.

I am totally down with boats that have nipples. I don`t know why either..

if they had the facilities/people/know-how i`m sure they could`ve chosen another option. but if this was the only option it was no worse off than if it had died in the wild. and why do they always leave it up to the youth in asia to handle this sort of thing? those guys must be swamped.

All you people are whining so much. Its just a whale that had some problems, this was an easy way to handle it. And it would wouldnt have made it to an enclosure anyway.
