Lightning in Extreme Slow Motion

Submitted by: SaintPatty 9 years ago in Science

It"s rare that you get to see how lightning breaks. I don"t even know how to describe this.

If you watch the initial spider web part, you can trace the exact line that the bigger strike takes once the small part hits ground. Way cool.

I`m sorry mate, there is a positive electron that you learn about at university level physics. It is called a positron. Other than that you are right.

I just find it completely ironic how today at work, my coworker told me he saw a documentary about lightning and basically described this exact phenomena to me.

Then I come home to this. Thank you, IAB. <3

When they say stems from the ground they mean a streamer, anything can give off one of these a tree, a chimney or even a blade of grass that acts as "the match" that sets off the chain of reaction, the "branches" on the main bolt were searching for a target, a streamer but never made the connection, thats where you see the flash follow them and stop.

"Wouldn`t the camera have to be moving faster then the speed of light to take that many frames that fast.....?" - Alienexpress

The high speed camera is probably around 5,000-10,000 FPS, it doesn`t capture light, lightning is electricity moving from one point to another. If you wanted to capture actual light moving you would need a camera that takes 186,000 FPS and the light would have already moved a mile away

0

Male 2,388
this is how the speed of light and energy will reasct with something that moves as slow as sound like every molecule which vibrates at a speed of sound see my theory is that when we observe elctrons they behave conxciously and thus they can spread themselves as such whilst watching for the next orbit of the electron. so creating a pattern.

"
whoa!! that was incredible. why does it stay there for so long though? i thought lightning was just a flash and it goes away."

The camera is going EXTREMELY slow. We can`t even see that inital branch with our eyes, it`s faster than what we can see or even know exists.. which is pretty damn fast, so compared to that, the lightning we CAN see is very slow.

thrawn09, you dolt, that website`s all wrong. Everyone knows lightning is God`s way of punishing sinners. The reason why lightning strikes ground most of the time is because God thinks the whole planet is sinful.

me too! i never knew it stayed for so long!, and i never knew about the nodes either... so much to be learnt on IAB!!"

Agreed. Diidn`ty know about nodes, and whats with the bolt that`s stil there?

It was like a cooler roman candle or somthing. Or other firework

For those who can`t google, check this out to figure out how lightning, and many other things work.

This lightning is very rare, because usually, the negative electrons in the cloud come down to the positives in the ground, but in this one, negatives in the ground are going up, and it`s something like less than 5% of lightning happens that way. Just thought I`d let ya know :-)

Someone explain the stem from the ground thing???
0
Reply
Male 904
pretty cool. i liked the first half better though
0
Reply
Male 41
Well yeah, it does stem from the ground. I think in science they teach you that its the positive and negative electrons in the clouds and ground coming together. Correct me if Im wrong.

Reply
Male 112
The first flash sent out nodes. The first node to reach the ground determined the strike location. It`s cool!!

So, it looks like lightning really does come from the sky (at least for the first part). Also, I wonder how many fps that camera gets and if it costs at least half as much as a small island.
