A good singer doesn`t need to be able to hear their voice in order to be on pitch. And, for the most part, she just walked up and down the stage - hardly a grueling workout.

You could tell it was dubbed over.
I`m sure she probably does lip-sync, but I doubt her *real* live singing isn`t *that* bad.

I would like to say, for someone who does not train her voice enough, and doesn`t have a fantastic voice to begin with, it`s not unlikely that this was the real audio from a performance. You notice, when opera singers do solos, they stand fairly still. It`s hard to sing well and prance around like that.
When she`s in the studio, she is relaxed and in a carefully controlled environment. Only the best of her singing is used.
Now, I`m sure someone has already said all of that, but I`m far too lazy to read through all of this sh*t and find out. So, if you want to yell at me about that, go ahead.

I`m a sound engineer and have done a few concerts in my time. If you have headphones on and isolate their mic (meaning no music, effects, or other vocalists) even the best singers in the world sound like crap.

parts of this (like the beginning) have been slowed down and sped up to make her sound off pitch- listen close, you can hear it.

other parts are not altered and still really suck.

this is real. but shes not the ONLY singer who does this. every singer who puts on a performance like that lip syncs because theres soo much dancing and moving around involved its hard to get your breathing. she pulled it off quite well, tho.

Eh. I`m not surprised. If you`ve ever been in a musical, you know how hard it is to sing and dance at the same time and actually be good. When`s that from? It looks pretty old......

Look, it`s as simple as this:
If she can`t dance and sing at the same time, then do one or the other.
She has to be good if she made it big in the music buissiness. Correction: HAD to be good.
ut it seems like anyone can do well now: Miley Cyrus, Ashleigh Simpson etc.
And if you look at other examples, then you will see that jumping around and performing well at the same time isnt so rare, i.e. Angus Young, Steve Tyler, and yes, Marching bands; because im sure a lot of those instruments like the sousaphone and bass drum are quite heavy to walk with, let alone march with...

"ever tried musical theatre? we dance and sing all the time. its not that hard as long as you rehearse. this was kind of sad."

But musical theater is so gayyyy.

Look, what`s happening here is this, she is half singing into her mic so she`s not off on her lip syncing timing. The sound guy, being an a**hole, recorded her mic for the whole show. It`s only turned on between songs or any other time she addresses the audience. As much as I hate pop music, it`s a lot harder to perform those shows than you can imagine.

Marching bands and cell phones shouldn`t have been compared, but don`t take it so literally, Volcom was exaggerating to make a point. He`s right.

And to the guy who compared marching band to `walking and talking on a cell phone,` you try marching around a field with a sousaphone at a tempo of quarter note = 160.
Cheese and rice. Even standing at attention is exhausting. Not to mention the glare from the sun.

AUTO-TUNE hahaha.

Yeah most pop singers use autotune and lots of vocal processing to make up for their undeserved fame.

I am in show choir and i know exactly how hard it is to sing and dance without becoming out of breath. At the end of three dances i am usually out of breath and i am the best in the class(president of our show choir). Britney is doing 12 or more dance numbers of course she is going to sound like that. You can even hear her panting.

3) If that is indeed, real, then all you need in the business is a body. Nothing more. Which is sad.

Oh come on, is this really surprising? have you seen some of the dancing she does? It`s enough to exhaust anyone. And when you can`t hear yourself...the audio has been knocking around for ages, it`s not from the videos you can see. Just from searching for some of her live performances on youtube from way back you can tell she can sing.

To all the people saying she wouldn`t be able to hear herself over the crowd and amplification. A show like this would obviously make use of in-ear monitoring systems (a little earplug-earphone hybrid) to monitor the music and clicktracks (for percussion-less moments). It would almost have to be so as they have no wedgemonitors and cannot possibly be coordinating the dance off of the echo of the outgoing signal from the PA. (P.s. Yay first post, been lurking for far too long

Also, 11Volcom11, did you just compare talking on a phone with playing music?
Seriously?
You must`ve seen some pretty amazing marching bands, then. XD
As far as I`m concerned, if you aren`t panting and wheezing by the end of your show, you`re doing it wrong.

I`m pretty sure this is fake (it just doesn`t sound like her voice), but probably not that far off the mark. The level of dancework in her shows means she CAN`T sing well. All that jerking side to side motion kills your airflow and jostles your vocal chords around, so even if you`re in good shape, it won`t work. Anyone who attempts that sort of movement without lipsynching will sound out of breath...just watch one of Garth Brooks` live performances.

And sorry, 11Volcom11 but you`re wrong about the marching band thing... they use roll-stepping and smooth progressive movement to steady themselves so that their airflow isn`t disrupted while they are moving and playing. Plus, you`ll notice that all the really difficult drill where they might get winded is done during the drumcore solo or during an easy part of the musical score, like when there are stacatto hits or disonant noise sections.

Oh yeah, I`m a band geek.

Male 599
well, you saw the story about the girl from China who ACTUALLY sang the opening song at the Olympics this year. Appearances are apparently far more important to people than skill, so I`d not be surprised if this was real. She doesn`t really looks like she`d be a good singer anyway.

I think this is what they all sound like (Madonna, Christina Augulara(sp?)) They`re doing more dancing than singing.

and in Brittany`s case it`s more `dancing`

Again, no Britney fan, and I wouldnt like to say whether that was real or not. But apart from all the mad dancing involved, has anyone ever tried singing when you cant hear yourself? The amplification is going out to the audience, not to you, so all you`ll usually hear is the crowd/backing track. Even if you have some kind of speaker playing the feed through to you, it`s surprisingly difficult to keep it together. I therefore would not be all that surprised if this is real.
Does it matter anyway? If you like the song, you like the song - we know she has *some* vocal talent, albeit not manifesting in live shows and she makes an effort to make it entertaining with the dancing etc. Is it really such a problem that it`s not all live?

"Anyway, I`m not a Britney fan, but in her defense, how many of you can sing while out of breath and still dancing your crazy moves?"

I think I made this point earlier, where you don`t need to be good at something to criticize someone else who is doing it. You see these crazy shows with judges (American Idol, America`s Got Talent, etc.) and not half of the judges themselves can do what they do. I mean, look at Simon Cowel (Sp.?). He probably can`t sing if his life depended on it, and yet he manages to get the reputation as the toughest judge on the show.

Opie, you got something on your wrist there.
Just in case you didn`t know.

I doubt she`d sing like this if she wasn`t in a concert. There are videos of her singing at a young age in crappy little talent shows, and she has a pretty good voice for a kid.

So, she`s no huge talent. But still, agents would rather have someone with some sort of singing background than none. It makes it easier to fix her voice electronically.

"How can you sing while out of breath..."
The same way marching bands, drum corps, and any other mobile acoustical instrument organization do it.
And if she can`t dance and sing, then she shouldn`t do both of them. That`s what happens in professional organizations, if you can`t do it, you`re out.

aright im no britney fan. i actually really hate her. but in this case i think comparing what she does to a marching band is the worst comparison ever. she is running around a stage dancing, clearly thats alot harder than bein in a marching band?? im not saying being in a marching band isnt as hard cause u gotta remember alot of stuff. but its more like walkin and talking on your cellphone....

Anyway, I`m not a Britney fan, but in her defense, how many of you can sing while out of breath and still dancing your crazy moves?

AND Britney actually IS talented (or was), but the garbage she chooses to sing doesn`t show her talent at all.

I think they probably record her singing before she performs so it`s not the studio audio.

Jennifer Nettles (Sugarland) and Christina Aguilera FTW.

Who cares. Doesn`t everybody already know she lip syncs? She`s half singing there so she can focus on her "show". They only open her mic up to the audience when she talks between songs. I absolutely hate pop stuff like that, but it is what it is, this shouldn`t be a surprise.
