Why Has Obesity Gotten Worse Over The Years?

I have an idea why: Cheese-filled pizza crust, but this guy has scientific reasons.

From what I`ve read, BMI is complete bullpoo. From wikipedia:

"The body mass index (BMI), or Quetelet index, is a statistical measure of the weight of a person scaled according to height. As such, it is useful as a population measure only, and is not appropriate for diagnosing individuals"

I just got done running 4 miles. I think I`ll go run 6 next time. UGH. Do you guys remember the atkins diet? What a waste. I used to work at GNC and all the Low Carb "Enthusiasts" were the most Anal. Reason being is because without much carbs in their system it made them more irritable. Yeah they lost weight, but they mostly lost muscle weight. That`s why a lot of them looked skinny and flabby. Just eat six small meals a day. Egg whites. Chicken Breasts. Protein shakes. Exercise daily with cardio and weight training.

im 27 used to have a 6 pack no u can just about see my 4 pack but im pulling more birds than when i had a pack i think they like a bit of wieght on you i mean would u prefer beyonce or an anorexic girl thats a size 0 same things goes other way around and this guy explains it perfectly dont turn around your life to loose weight just slowly buil d up your metoblism with oily fish like sardines and tune salda withs olive oil and sweet corn fish fingers basically a fish diet rules i eatnothing but fish and also eat at regular intervals . and if i know im gonna junk out i first make sure i have my bowl of tuna first with sweetocrn and olive oil then 2 hours later ill munch crisp and pizza like mad but because u ate the good stuff first u dont feel as bad and dont affect u as bad oh yeah a pint of ice cold water with the tuna salad

Look, people that over eat do lose weight, just look at how well the diet industries are doing. So, you can`t just say to someone "go on a diet" or "stop eating so much". Its those types of ignorant comments that do little to nothing. If anything is going to work, its about educating yourself or someone else on how to actually loss weight. Diets DO NOT WORK and ridiculing doesn`t either. Its about knowing how your body functions and dealing with it on its own terms. Its as simple as that.

^^Actually this isn`t true at all. You can consume fat, but you need to know that every 1 gram of fat is going to equal 9 calories, where 1 gram of carbs and 1 gram of protein is going to equal 5 cals.

The "REAL" problem is when you can`t burn all the calories you eat in a day. This is when you begin to gain weight as your body begins to store it for later use. This is the fundamental problem. Its not about Fat, Carbs or Protein being better or worse then one another. Its simply about intake, energy for daily use and storage.

What complicates things, however, is these diets. This is simply because when you excessively cut back your intake your body assumes that it needs to go into survival mode. As a result, your metabolism slows down and begins to hold back on the energy that is being eaten daily. Its these diets that really complicate the problem of over eating. I saw this woman on HBO who was really fat. She said she would eat 13 times a day and never exercise.

After awhile she decided to get lipo and said "this is my only choice left"

The real problem for most people trying to lose weight is they want something quick. So they take pills or starve themselves or throw up or go on the newest diet fad. Most of them do work, in a way, and most of them are quick. The problem with all of the above, is that besides being horrible for your body (you might look a little better but your liver, bones, and teeth aren`t going to care)the second you come off of them you gain the weight back quicker than you lost it. I wake up to a fruit smoothie in the morning, a good sandwhich for lunch (no fat free stuff for me!), and eat whatever I want for dinner with occasional snacks in between. The real key is that if you are not hungry, don`t eat!!! my rule of thumb is that if I am looking into the fride or pantry for more than 30 seconds, I close it and go back to what I was doing. That is pleanty of time to decide what to eat if you are actually hungry. If it takes you longer you are either just bored or grazing.

i bike to work (4 miles there and back) every day, and i`m still overweight. and you know why? my body has lots of muscle, which makes you overweight. i am technically obese, and i asked my doctor about the statistics, and even he said that they were bullpoo. but i`m happy to live in mass. (:

BMI works just fine to calculate obesity. Its the best way to do it, infact I don`t think there IS any other accepted way.

Your nation is obese. Live with it. Most of you are too comfortable to want to change things. I dont really care. You might get laughed at, but your already being laughed at for a bunch of other stuff.

Things that cause cancer, that you should care about: smoking.
Everything else that `causes cancer`:
1. Does not cause cancer or
2. Only causes cancer in absurd dosages or
3. Does not cause cancer.

Next... Atkins had a brave idea, but its never that easy. The fact is, if you consume fat you will become fat.

But, I`ll agree with those calories... counting the calories is probably the best way to do it.

Nice, it sounds like you`re an educated consumer. The key to fixing these problems in the market, though, is not the government`s business (I`m not saying you suggested that), but if more people were like you and educated themselves instead of relying on the government to discern right and wrong, we wouldn`t have this problem. In fact, the HFCS problem is caused by a government restriction on importing sugar. It`s so expensive because there is so little of it, that they have to resort to it. If the government lifted this restriction, the market would probably demand cane sugar or beet sugar and the companies could put it out with little price change.

white sugar isn`t nearly as bad for you as HFCS. white sugar is easily broken down by the body. White sugar has been used for hundreds of years without any problems. Same with honey. Cane sugar was discovered with the new world, and has been used to sweeten ever since then. Natural sugars like cane and beat sugar are ok, in moderation they are perfectly fine. Even in excess you might get overweight or loose teeth because of cane/beat sugar. But processed HFCS does some really nasty things to the body in the long term. But because it doesn`t pose a positive short term life threatening problem, it is approved by the FDA. Everyone knows sacrin causes cancer when too much is ingested, but the FDA still allows it to be used in equal/twin/sweetnlow, and in diet sodas.

I have never understood why people still believe that cutting out carbs makes any difference to weight loss. Do people not research anything?
The Atkins diet worked because you were allowed to eat as much protein as you liked and because the majority of most peoples meal was carbs by cutting them out people replaced them with even more protein. Protein suppresses your appetite but you can still eat carbs, they make no difference. They found that all the people on the Atkins diet (who lost weight) were in fact eating the same number of calories as people on low calorie diets. It had absolutely nothing to do with carbohydrates.

Atkins didn`t know why his diet worked and assumed it was the lack of carbs making the body burn fat but this was in fact complete bs. I hope you all learned something today.

its a good thing im young and 115 lbs.
my bmi is 20 (or was it 21?)
but, my gym teacher said bmi (body mass index) is just the percentage of fat/muscle on your body. and i guess for a 13 year old girl, 20 is just fine.

he also said that bmi isnt just fat or muscle, its both put together.

im not gonna be obese like the rest of new york[stupid yellow new york]

now imma go google fat people and post it here.

I try to stay away from most processed foods. Fast food is a poison. It really is. People get addicted to just like any other drug. Its a shame. Same with sugar. White sugar is so bad for you. I feel bad for malnutritioned kids raised on McDonalds and Candy and try to loose the weight later on but their like a crack addict when it comes to food.

Those companies pretty much have free rain to put whatever they want into.

I never was into the the whole hippie take on freshly home grown food, but after doing a lot of research its growing on me.

the thing about diet pills is that some people don`t get that you can`t just take them and expect to lose weight. They just help do things like curb appetite and speed up metabolism. YOU have to do the real work by changing your lifestyle.

They`re an especially nice thing for women, because it`s harder for our bodies to lose weight than it is for men`s bodies :p

i lost 20lbs just by walking almost everywhere because when i`m with my fiance we don`t have a car. and by only eating when i was hungry as opposed to being bored. when im with family and theres food everywhere i just go on the treadmill for 20-30 minutes daily and watch my calories the rest of the day.

although i have to disagree when people say diet pills don`t work because they worked for me. they really do help but only as an added boost. not in place of exercise or healthier food.

The process for making HFCS is that corn goes through a process and then enzymes are added turning all the biological carbs into a a high fructose syrup. In fact, these enzymes are capable of turning most living material into a high fructose syrup, they just use corn because it is so plenty in the US. Here`s the kicker, these enzymes are still present in the syrup. Now, granted that syrup is cut down and diluted, but you take a person who drinks 64 oz. of soda per day, plus any process foods which by the way, most fast food companies add HFCS to their food, including their meats and this person is taking on ALOT of HFCS. While taking that in they are also taking in the enzymes that make the syrup and those enzymes are now in their bodies working on the blood and organs. So not only are we ingesting more sugar than before, the product is in our blood turning small amounts of our blood into fructose which our body counts just like any other sugar.

Rro, pizza is okay for you, but most places you go, it`s gonna have TONS of oil. Not to mention all that cheese. And cheese is good for you, but a lot is really NOt good for you because of all the fat.

That was because coke went from being made with beat sugar to high fructose corn syrup. Pepsi made a change around the same time as well. Since then every soda company other than "jones" now makes their sodas with HFCS. HFCS is now added into fruit juices as well. In fact HFCS is added in so much foods these days you will be hard pressed to find a processed food that DOESN`T contain HFCS. In the 90s the american heart association rallied and lobbied both congress and companies to stop using sodium products in their foods as a flavor addative. Many processed foods used sodium products like salt and MSG to add flavor and as a preservative. Thanks to that compaign the companies found out that when they removed the salt from their foods, the food lacked flavor. So they replaced salt with HFCS. Check your cans of campbells soup, it contains HFCS. Like stated, you will be hard pressed to find foods that don`t contain HFCS these days.

There are a multitude of factors as the reason US citizens are becoming obese. Sedentary lifestyles being only one factor that might make a small portion of the population obese but not 20+%. And i have see those numbers from more than one source, so his numbers are copied from other sources. I am personally blaming high fructose corn syrup as the culprit for the obesity rate. I looked into that product and found some disturbing facts. Before I get into my discovery, i would like to point out what this product is used in these days. In 1985 most companies that used sugar in their products used beat sugar, which on a molecular level is about the same as cane sugar. Then companies like Coke and Pepsi found out that high fructose corn syrup tastes exactly like sugar water, but it was MUCH cheaper. Anyone remember "New Coke?" where thety changed the formula much to the chargrim of the populace? Then they went to calling it coke "classic?"

SPrinkZ, BMI doesn`t work for me either. If your tall then you are always going to be underweight, or very close to underweight. According to BMI, im legally anorexic and need special help immediately

Ok people. I can solve all the problems for you here and now. I 100% guarentee this works on simple easy steps you`ll want to do!

1) Go hungry occasionally. Let your stomache growl. It wont kill you to wait an hour to eat!
2) Sex..lots of it!
3) Get a dog and walk it daily!
4) Walk, dont drive your fat lazy ass to the local shop to pick up a 6 pack.
5) Stop eating crap between meals. Put down the bag of chips and step away from the ice cream!
6) Only go to the gym if you want to be buff...if you happy being slim stick to points 1-5!

I agree with everything this guy in the vid says BUT the thing about calories. The number of calories in soda is equal to that of an apple. But the calories in the soda is empty. So you can drink a can and be under budget but you won`t be eating healthily.

P.S. My BMI is like 31, and I do have a lot of muscle--so it doesn`t really work for me. But someone like my father whose BMI is probably 40 it would work for--he was fat.

Maybe if we look into the number of fast food restaurants that has been opened the past 15 years we can see,why is easier to buy a double melted patty (yummy) than making a tasty salad at home.

Trust me, that`s not the case. BMI is not a good measurement for an INDIVIDUAL, but across an entire population? I think it`s pretty accurate.

AKappy is right; sedentary lifestyles are the cause of obesity. We have all this advanced technology crap like internet and video games. When we sit around and look at a screen, 1. we`re not MOVING, and 2. we`re not thinking about what we`re eating, so we usually end up snacking on crappy food instead of eating real meals.
