God Absinthe is brilliant, you can generally get it at your local offie if you look carefully. Be careful not to go too cheap though, my mate brought a bottle that was half price to a party and all 10 people who drank some were throwing up the rest of the night.
However, you must be careful - it can give an epic hangover if you overdose (due to contained herbs)
Just getting in touch with my inner geek by pointing out that ethanol can only be purified to around 95.6% by distillation as it forms an azeotropic mixture. The best possible purification can achieve around 99% (absolute) ethanol but the process uses highly toxic and carcinogenic benzene which remains in the mixture thus rendering the product undrinkable (unless you label as Tequila).
It`s good stuff, but does have a kick if you`re not used to it. Especially the tougher stuff.
Mind you, the Czech have long brewed a drink that was called Absinthe but wasn`t, it`s only recently that the ban has been lifted.
It should be noted that thujone comes from wormwood and several other plants.
Regarding the amount of water added, absinthe is very flavorful and water acts as a diluent. The amount of water is up to the drinker.
itsallfake: About the 65% causing hallucinations, I really doubt that. I had a friend during high-school that went to a chemical engineer preparation course, and they had an industrial still on the school grounds. The stuff that came out of it was 100% alcohol until you opened the bottle.
Needless to say, he brought some home with him, and served it at his next party. Straight up. One glass of the stuff to each of his friends including me, one glass of water to himself. It tasted like, well, alcohol, felt like it burned holes in my throat, and smashed me completely out of my head. No hallucinations though.
We have a long way to get to 70%...
In England, wormwood was never banned because it didn`t cause as many social problems towards the end of the great binge as it did elsewhere such as France.
Eventually its makers were permitted to continue producing it without the substance but negativity towards the liquor is still fairly high due to its history.
There are many liquors you can and should mix with that amount of water, one of which is Ouzo, which is mixed with iced water and also even whisky. NOT WhisEy, as much.
P.s. He needs to learn that it`s not ok to dress like you`re at the Moulin Rouge if you have that strong an American accent.
I dunno about you silly states, but over here Absinthe is legal and it`s lovely. Marylin Mansons `Mansinthe` tastes like ass, and has been renowed by critics so taste like sewage. :)
No, but he does have his own line of absinthe, called Mansinthe (*insert joke pertaining to Marilyn Manson`s semen here)wich I have heard is better than average, cheap, and going to be legal in the USA soon, because technically absinthe is now legal in the US, but it has to meet very very high standards. Oh, and fun fact: Mansinthe contains 66.6% alchohol.
Shame though, Stupid people thinking they can hallucinate will want it. The price will go down as well, so the middleclass people can drink it alongside wine coolers and Belgium Bud.
its going to be the next fad since starbucks.
I wave a sad goodbye to a once refined drink.
and opie, i`m irish, and i`ve never been addicted to any substance, not cigarettes, not weed, not alchohol, not coke, nothing
I`m only 14, but I`d give my left nut to drink that stuff!
but i still wanna try it XD
