Jinxiejae - Absinthe is green when you pour it out the bottle, it goes milky white when you pour water in same with Pastis (yum) or Ricard etc.

God Absinthe is brilliant, you can generally get it at your local offie if you look carefully. Be careful not to go too cheap though, my mate brought a bottle that was half price to a party and all 10 people who drank some were throwing up the rest of the night.

I love absinthe :) And just recently they legalized it here in Poland.

However, you must be careful - it can give an epic hangover if you overdose (due to contained herbs)

The amount of Thujone (what`s said to cause hallucinations in absinthe) is waaaay too low for the hallucinations to actually appear. This is true for both contemporary Absinthe and what was drank before the ban.

motownc: For all I know it might have been, at a later date when we opened a fresh bottle it steamed for a while, my friend explained that was the alcohol "balancing out", evaporating while sucking moisture from the air to reach said 95.6%.

Tiredofnicks: `The stuff that came out of it was 100% alcohol until you opened the bottle`.

Just getting in touch with my inner geek by pointing out that ethanol can only be purified to around 95.6% by distillation as it forms an azeotropic mixture. The best possible purification can achieve around 99% (absolute) ethanol but the process uses highly toxic and carcinogenic benzene which remains in the mixture thus rendering the product undrinkable (unless you label as Tequila).

If you like Ricard or Pastis, you`ll like Absinth, it is the same drink after all, just a bit more potent.

It`s good stuff, but does have a kick if you`re not used to it. Especially the tougher stuff.

Mind you, the Czech have long brewed a drink that was called Absinthe but wasn`t, it`s only recently that the ban has been lifted.

To all the specific component in absinthe that causes hallucinations is thujone. There is a law that prohibits thujone from being sold. As a result absinthe sold in the USA has a very low concentration of this component typically less than 3 ppm. Bottles sold around the world vary in concentration from very low like the USA to values in the 200 ppm range. The law in the USA pertains to the sale of this component NOT the USE so you can import FOR PERSONAL USE the bottles you buy overseas. However, I would recommend that if a customs agent is not aware of this that you just surrender the bottle and not try and fight it. (Do you really want to have a disagreement with customs as you try to enter the US??)

It should be noted that thujone comes from wormwood and several other plants.

Regarding the amount of water added, absinthe is very flavorful and water acts as a diluent. The amount of water is up to the drinker.

Why do modern people drink Absinthe to begin with? Because of its reputation of decadence and romance from times past. Why did people from the olden days drink it? To get drunk and high at the same time. Take wormwood out of it and it`s just green Ouzo.

itsallfake: About the 65% causing hallucinations, I really doubt that. I had a friend during high-school that went to a chemical engineer preparation course, and they had an industrial still on the school grounds. The stuff that came out of it was 100% alcohol until you opened the bottle.

Needless to say, he brought some home with him, and served it at his next party. Straight up. One glass of the stuff to each of his friends including me, one glass of water to himself. It tasted like, well, alcohol, felt like it burned holes in my throat, and smashed me completely out of my head. No hallucinations though.

as my picture may suggest, i am a rather big fan of absinthe, and i have tried all sorts of different methods. this one is not one of my favorites as you get a rather odd flavour. i much prefere either drinking it neat(which is not something you want to underestimate, especially if you happen to be drinking 89% absinthe), or doing that same ritual without the fire (bavarian)

Absinthe update: I see a couple of people know it is not illegal in the US any longer. But the latest that hasn`t been mentioned is that recently several bottles of sealed absinthe were found from various times in history including the 1700s. Scientists tested the liquid inside the sealed bottle and found that the amount of wormwood in the liquor was miniscule, not really any more than they add in todays absinthe. What they did find was the astonishing amount of alcahol in the original absinthe. They measured it at nearly 200 proof, nearly 100% alcahol. When they discovered this, they immediately came to the unanimous conclusion that it was not the wormwood that causes halucinations like they originally thought, but the high alcahol content. Apparently once a human imbibes more than 65% aclahol they begin to halucinate. the higher the alcahol content, the more potent the halucinations... Might have to google search for that story...

I can remember my friends trying something that`s probably 10% alcohol (1/3 vodka with 2/3 light coke)

We have a long way to get to 70%...

Ouzo shouldn`t be mixed with water, in my opinion. Just drink a little of it. That would be better anyway, since you can have more time to enjoy the flavour, well, hopefully, if you`re drinking it slowly, which you should be. I just don`t like the idea of dilouting any drinks. Just have a smaller amount depending on the alcohol content.

Absinthe is illegal if it contains the hallucinogenic substance known as "wormwood"

In England, wormwood was never banned because it didn`t cause as many social problems towards the end of the great binge as it did elsewhere such as France.

Eventually its makers were permitted to continue producing it without the substance but negativity towards the liquor is still fairly high due to its history.

There are many liquors you can and should mix with that amount of water, one of which is Ouzo, which is mixed with iced water and also even whisky. NOT WhisEy, as much.

P.s. He needs to learn that it`s not ok to dress like you`re at the Moulin Rouge if you have that strong an American accent.

Yeah absinthe is awesome I had it in Majorca couple of years back when I was 16 (god bless their licensing laws), you can buy it in any supermarket in the UK but its capped at 50%. The real stuff is around 70-80%. The drink used to be a hallucinogenic aaaaages ago but it isn`t now, its just really really strong and makes you feel all warm inside.

Man, you guys are lame especially your friend `the_windy` had he/she ever drank alcohol is his/her/its life before?! Absinthe is really really not that bad. I`ve drank half a bottle to myself, and while it did indeed get me pretty darn wankered, it`s hardly freakin liquidfied herion.

I dunno about you silly states, but over here Absinthe is legal and it`s lovely. Marylin Mansons `Mansinthe` tastes like ass, and has been renowed by critics so taste like sewage. :)

Dear stupid fellow Americans, if you were old enough to drink alcohol you would know three years ago the ban on Absinthe in the states was lifted, and there are now over 12 American companies trying their hand at the liqour.

I thought the only type of Absinthe that was illegal was the kind made with wormwood or something. Because it was the wormwood that caused the hallucinations. I might be wrong.

"is it true that marilyn manson was trying to make absinthe candy?"

No, but he does have his own line of absinthe, called Mansinthe (*insert joke pertaining to Marilyn Manson`s semen here)wich I have heard is better than average, cheap, and going to be legal in the USA soon, because technically absinthe is now legal in the US, but it has to meet very very high standards. Oh, and fun fact: Mansinthe contains 66.6% alchohol.

Its legal in the states now, think it was legalized just recently.

Shame though, Stupid people thinking they can hallucinate will want it. The price will go down as well, so the middleclass people can drink it alongside wine coolers and Belgium Bud.

its going to be the next fad since starbucks.

I wave a sad goodbye to a once refined drink.

Considering that every dead person who is vaguely related to me was a raging alcoholic or had some form of addictive substance issues, alcohol may not be the best thing for me.

It was legal in Mexico when I went for our senior trip. It was expensive though, like $50 for a small bottle. Anyway we bought 2 and shared it between 3 of us. Absinthe is also known to cause hallucination and especially known to cause a fairy to appear. (Our bottle had a green fairy on the bottle). One of my friends begin to see a green halo in his peripheral vision. It tastes a lot like strong licorice. Good stuff but there are better things to drink in my book.

I LOVE drinks that are intricate or rare to make. I think that is how you SHOULD drink. Not just drink some random crap to get drunk. Drinking should be an enjoyable experience that you can remember the next day.

It`s legal in Canada. ^__^ We bought a bottle for one of our parties. After seeing a friend take a TINY shot (with water and sugar cube) and puking almost right away afterwards, I have been too afraid to try it. >_< There about half a bottle still sitting on the shelf. :P
But are you really supposed to put in THAT much water? O___O Maybe that`s why she couldn`t take it...she`s not a lightweight by the way.

no, your wrong, its not illegal, they just have weird rituals about keeping it out. the goverment is quite strange and stupid.
anyway, it doesn`t seem like adding that much water would make it taste very good, but i wanna try it
