Also, catbarf:
A bush would be good cover, no doubt, but the branches don`t move much. A person running around moves more, and so will draw the sentry`s fire. What`s more, a bush only moves a noticable amount in medium-high winds.

And loridiam:
It went back to those spots once it detected no movement because that`s where it was set up pointing. That`s where it goes at rest. If you wind up some y-axis rotating platform mounted on a stationary spring, the platform will return to where it was mounted. The same applies for the sentry.

When I buy one, I`ll gut it (like a cornish game hen) and remount it in a level 1 sentry body, which I should start making.
Then I`ll buy two more, and mount those in a level 2 sentry body.

This is what happens when the Little Rascals grow up: Trampoline x2, Army Jeep, Automated Paintball Machine Gun, Paintball Suitable House

Firstly, the military sorta has something like this coming, by Samsung. Only it uses a real machine gun.

Secondly... it -can- differentiate.

not a bad idea...hook up that airsoft vulcan i´ve seen on redwolf to it instead of that paint cannon and you´ve got real fun...

Pretty cool but the video was way too long. I didn`t need to see 15 demos of the same thing.

It would be a neat little thing to have.

"Friend/Foe identification is a matter solved with something as simple as IR tape or fabric in a team-specific pattern."

The gun is built to track movement. Neither of those would help.

"(As for wind... when did WIND become visible?)"

Never seen a bush move in the wind? Or branches on a tree?

"Your condescending attitude totally sucks ass."

I`m not condescending towards the guy who made this- it`s amazing development with easily-available parts, and it works well enough. I`m condescending towards the idiots drooling over it as the second coming of christ.

"Why was it constantly aiming at the window coincidently on the side the distracting object was being thrown. "

When it no longer has an active target it moves back to the default position.

I`m thinking this is slightly fake. I`ll agree that it shoots things on movement yes. But the whole distraction bit seemed a bit dodgey to me. Why was it constantly aiming at the window coincidently on the side the distracting object was being thrown. And also the distracting object was always thrown first, throw it after you start moving and see what happens. Otherwise its cool as hell... i wonder would it trigger onto bubbles... easy way to make it run out of ammo... sit behind the board and blow bubbles LOL!!!

Keep in mind that this is going to be fairly expensive, depending, of course, on how high powered of a laptop you need for the software. It could come without the laptop, and that would keep the cost down quite a bit.

And Catbarf... this guy isn`t DARPA. He`s come very close to the concept of several DARPA projects that have recently been made public... and he`s apparently done it on his own.

Your condescending attitude totally sucks ass.

First of all, someone please slap Catbarf for running his mouth in an attempt to sound like he knows what he`s talking about. Friend/Foe identification is a matter solved with something as simple as IR tape or fabric in a team-specific pattern. (As for wind... when did WIND become visible?)

Second, if anyone knows how to contact this guy, I GUARANTEE I can introduce him to people who would be willing to invest in the development of such a product.

^heh. that didn`t quite work as i intended... o:-)

catbarf: both areas they demonstrated it in were outdoors. i kind of see what you are talking about, with the wind causing enough movement in the foliage, but picking it up while it`s active would just be dumb.

Serio: that wouldn`t work. it detects motion. i think that if friendlies wore a specific color that it could detect it would work.

great until you try to turn it off only to be welcomed by a barrage of paint balls aimed at your balls

paintballs > human balls

Neagle, DARPA has created robots that can fight while on the move, which is a step ahead of this.

Sorry folks, but this is useless unless you deploy it indoors. It can`t differentiate between the wind and a hostile assailant. Ergo, if you pick it up while it`s active or put it anywhere a gust might affect it or anything around it, it will start shooting like crazy.

But still, a nice tech demo if you don`t mind placing a rapid-fire paint cannon right next to an expensive piece of electronics.

DARPA spent millions on autonomous sentry deterrence technology with results not as impressive as demonstrated here. Nice!

A simple chip in the suit should stop the gun from firing at friendlies. Fantastic though!

*friend/foe differentiation
*night vision
*spider legs

Does it have the same tracking skill at night? That`d make for some good night time capture the flag, fill each gun with different paintballs so you can tell if the other teams gun got ya.

I would love one of those...
Although, I thought they`d leave it in the street or something...to attack the public.

But I s`pose that would get their machine kicked in pretty fast.

when you set up this kind of thing, there are no friendlys... although, I dont think its too hard to give friendlies some kind of small device that transmits a "dont shoot me" signal to the machine...
