@mrfitzerbert... Wire the bulbs in series and it might work.

I`ll have to review this video later when I have time to sit and think about it. But, he grabbed the thing with his bare hands and there was no steam from the can. Unless he waited several minutes, I don`t see how it could be real. Unless he has a very high threshold for pain.

do you notice that super fast talking radio in the background?

I don`t think those lamps are LED`s. The box in the video said that they were heater lamps rated at 150 Celsius (302F) at 2.5v and 0.3A. That would make it plausible, however like someone said, they might draw too much power.

Those lamps are for 2.5v, half that of usb, and each draw 0.3A each. So they would need a 0.6A 2.5v supply. A resistor would deal with the voltage change, but USB only provides 0.5A. So it might work, but the lamps would not work at full power.

If we assume that the current:temperature ratio is linear, and 0.5/2=0.25A for each lamp, then the lamps will work at 83% of their rated temerature, which will be around 125 Celsius (257F).

Just having an educated guess at that though, would putting a resistor into that adjust the current requirements at all?

"Wikipedia says: "The term viral video refers to video clip content which gains widespread popularity through the process of Internet sharing, typically through email or IM messages, blogs and other media sharing websites." So this is not a viral video because...it`s not popular enough?"

Don`t forget Wikipedia talks bollox.

It makes you wondering... how in hell do poeple come up with this stuff, and how many laptops have they wreckied before geting it right?

Almost guarantee that this is somehow faked. Those little bulbs go into flashlights. If they got THAT hot, they would either suck the batteries dead or melt the freakin reflector.

I too call BS on account of LEDs producing very low amounts of heat. But hell, maybe theres another reason someone with a better knowledge of science and technology can use to prove me wrong.

I guess this is useful for college dorms where people aren`t allowed microwaves in their rooms.

I call BS. You can only get a couple of watts out of a USB port. Even with insulation it`s going to be tough to pop a single kernel. In a metal can like that? Forget it.

It`s probably not real, but it would be an asset for when a religious debate breaks out on I-A-B.

If it`s real, cool.. but I use my microwave for that.

Yeah, I`m pretty certain a USB port could not supply the amount of power necessary to pop popcorn kernels.

Really cool, but the guy who made this (and videos like this) should really try to invent something useful. If I was lost in the woods starving, I don`t think a laptop, 3 usb cords, LED lights, and a bag of Jiffy Pop would be readily available to me...:-/

It`s a smart idea, but I would much rather just stick to the old methods of pop-corn making. A bag, and a microwave. Or just a real pop-corn machine.

not going to happen. USB can supply about 300-500mW, in other words 0.3 - 0.5 watts.

Those lights are (from the video) 2.5v at .3 amps. Meaning roughly 1watt lights. (a little less, but..) Anyhow, that means over 1.5A from the USB port. You`d kill a computer trying to pull 1.5A I would think. (It may do it, but it`s DEFINATELY not rated for it)

And can 1.5watts pop popcorn? Probably not.

I seriously doubt that tiny LED (I think thats what it was...) can create enough heat for that. Besides, it never shows the seeds actually popping.

I call bullpoo.

Useful for long trips. 3 hour car ride: Hmm, I`m hungry, there`s no food here, but I do have this contraption and a bunch of popcorn kernels, perfect!

Now, people will run to their computers attempting to make popcorn with them... only to find out it`s an ad campaign just like the cellphone popping corn video.
