Why are people saying they don`t want to ride the Greyhound again?
It`s already really unlikely for you to be on a bus and have someone being decapitated. If it has already happened once then if you think about it...it`s even less likely to happen again.
Don`t let the crazy people win.
There`s too many of them already :(

If you wanted everybody on that bus to put themselves in PSYCHO`S way when it was already too late and too dangerous to do anything for the person being stabbed, then you`re just plain sick.

Do you think everybody who was on that bus doesn`t feel like poo looking back and thinking about what they COULD have done had they only acted faster or had a clearer thought process? Obviously they`re going to be traumatized and shells of themselves for a long time to come but to blame them or judge them for what some psycho did is ridiculous. Blame the psycho. Have you ever been witness to an unprovoked and vicious murder in a confined space? Then shut the hell up. If you have, you would know better than to climb up onto your high horse and call those people cowards.

lizzybee16: yes, murder capital. Not RANDOM violence capital. I live in Winnipeg, and I`m sorry to say that I consider Portage to be the middle of nowhere too. Sorry.

Since hearing about this, I swear I haven`t been able to sleep. Everytime I close my eyes I see sick images of everything I`ve heard and read about this story and just ache for his poor family and those people on the bus. Imagine being behind them and having to run past some guy stabbing somebody else. It was bright outside and everything would have been right in plain view. I`m so disturbed by the whole thing.

Also, that psycho started with the victim`s neck. Neck + giant rambo knife + unexpected stabbing that nobody understands until it`s well underway = NO HOPE FOR THE VICTIM. It`s terrible and I wish I could believe I would have tackled the loon or attacked him in some way and been the hero, but there was nothing anybody could do.

livereg, Portage is not in the middle of nowhere. We`re the 4th or 5th largest city in manitoba. Even that part of the highway is not the middle of nowhere. And random violence is NOT rare in this part of canada. Maniboba has the highest murder rate in relation to population in canada.

Sorry if i`m ranting. I just don`t like people to think where i live is in the middle of nowhere. People do it a lot.

No lie. I read the entire report somewhere else. =]

This is sick, this happened in the middle of nowhere, and I`m sure 95% of the bus was sleeping when this whacko decided he needed to stab someone today.

This nut-job probably stabbed this poor kid 20 times in a matter of 30 seconds, there is NO ONE that would be stupid enough to try to stop him, they would have just got stabbed too.

Random violence is so rare in this part of Canada. I`m anxious to see what other information comes out about this attack over the next few days.

The man has been identified and is only going to get second degree murder!! He should be getting first degree!

as far as I can recall, one of the major rules of first aid, or just emergency in general, is ASSESS THE SITUATION AND RISK. which is what alot did, they say man with big rambo knife, in the confined spaces of a greyhound, so...what can you do really? They did what they could, the driver stopped the bus(smart move), whoever could got off did and were now safe, and they kept the suspect trapped on the bus until cops ariived. who knows how you will react in that siatuation.

I also noticed people talking about good samaritanism. Think about it though. He was focussed on the one guy. Distract him, and he may go for everyone else too, including yourself. I say, get off the bleeping bus, before you`re chopped into easily digestible nuggets.

I remember hearing about that, when all that we knew is that the guy was stabbed. Then I watched the evening news and saw Caton`s interview and felt really just plain wrong.

I`ve heard the reason that the identity of the victim hasn`t been released as his next of kin has not yet been informed because they`re on vacation or something... but this is coming from a friend of a cousin of the guy, so I`m not sure.

I was so paranoid when I took the bus this morning. Which is sad, I know, but I couldn`t help myself. I just kept thinking, I really don`t want to die on a Winnipeg Transit bus. I also kind of don`t want to go to Portage la Prairie right now.

Oh my God, that man is stabbing someone. Quick, let`s get him to stab us too!

Seriously, by the time someone had been stabbed once, not one person here would jump in unarmed to the save the day, no matter how big they want to pretend their balls are. Also note this is on a bus. Not much room for three guys to jump him all at once and get the knife off him so he can`t do anything else. And most people wouldn`t be physically capable of disarming a knife-wielding man alone. Trying to be a hero is the sort of thing that gets you killed.

And please stop trying to start fights on this forum. You know who you are.

I live in Portage la Prairie, and this happened like 18 km`s west of us (like 15 minutes). I heard it right away at Tim`s. It says on our city website that they identified both the victim and the attacker, and the attaker is being tried here in Portage. Apparently this sets a record as one of the most gruesome killings in canadian history. The scary thing is the bus would have passed through town, and I don`t live that far from the bus depot. And people, stop calling us crazy canadians. We`re generally friendly. Travellers pretend to be canadian because they like us.

Don`t be f-ucking idiots. There is no way all these people that are spouting out things like "why the hell didn`t they jump him, and stop him" would EVER in that situation, do ANYTHING themselves. You are morons. The guy had a f-ucking RAMBO knife, I`d be scared out of my mind. They got off the bus so no one else was hurt, then 3 of them got back on to see if the victim was even ALIVE. He clearly wasn`t, they got slashed at but were able to get away, and the driver disabled the bus before the nut job could drive away. These people were brave, you stupid f-ucks

Double post, sorry. Just read the article patchouly posted.

The definition for autopsy, according to dictionary.com is: inspection and dissection of a body after death, as for determination of the cause of death.

The man was beheaded and gutted. An autopsy is needed why?

I know it`s really nothing to laugh about, but I mentioned it to my mom, and she said, "Wait, what happened?" and I said, "Well the guy was decapitated and gutted, and they`re doing an autopsy." She said, "Gee, I wonder what he died of."

It made me laugh simply because my mom has the sense of humor of a limp noodle.

That`s terrifying. I really don`t know what I`d have done in that situation. My penchant for self perseverance ahead of others isn`t super high, so I might have tried to help, but in reality when watching a guy gut and decapitate someone in very closed quarters, I`d get my happy ass out of there.

This is crazy, but it could have happened anywhere. It`s not like Greyhound buses are havens for crazy people. And those who say they wouldn`t sleep, the trip from Edmonton to Winnipeg is 20-22 hours long. This was the end of the trip, don`t tell me you wouldn`t sleep at any time.

I`ve taken the bus for 15 hours at a time by myself several times across canada, and there`s never been any problems with anybody. Most people sleep and the rest read or watch movies.

To suddenly have someone screaming out of nowhere would have been shocking enough. It`s not surprising nobody did anything. The guy was probably stabbed four or five times before anyone really knew what was happening.

I rode Greyhound once and that was just about enough for me. And I think this story further solidifies my decision.

I couldn`t help but think some of the passengers could have helped. But then again, it is a pretty unusual scene to be in, but I can see both sides.

Nevertheless, just think if one passenger had been able to carry as firearm...

Touche, my friend.

And this is... insane. And all you guys who says "they were pussy`s for not jumping the guy!"
Was the guy who was sitting infront of them really a pussy or a coward or whatever for thinking "pooe, I need to get the rest of these people off the bus before he comes after them too" instead of thinking "pooe, I need to disarm this guy with me and the few other people (Article said many were asleep) that are awake so he doesn`t kill the rest of us on the bus"?

I think either way, they all showed some great balls.

It`s like the old addage about "You weren`t there, man" You say you all would have jumped him now, sitting at home in fornt of your computer, but holy crap, you may just have been pooing your pants if you were really there.

My mom always warned me about taking the Greyhound...

I usually take the Greyhound from NYC up to Dartmouth once in a while to visit my boyfriend...and it doesn`t help that the stops in between are small, middle-of-nowhere New England towns. Now I`m thinking that I probably should just take the Amtrak even though it costs more. But, seriously, decapitation? That is insane.

Yeah, that`s one of the reasons I don`t ride Greyhound nowadays.

There was onetime when I was 15 when this guy was sitting two rows ahead of me on a Greyhound bus. A cop came on the bus and ordered the guy to get off. Instead of cooperating, the guy punched the cop in the face and ran off. Unfortunately, three cops were waiting outside and tackled him. It was awesome.

I`ve also been attacked near a Greyhound station (hit em in the nuts, always) and abandoned by Greyhound at a station at 3 am (the station was closed, so I was outside) all because they didn`t have enough people booked on a bus to justify the last leg of my trip (they didn`t tell me this until I was already into the trip). Did I mention that I was 15 as well? Yeah, abandon a teen girl outside a station at 3 am. I wound up having to hitchhike instead (well, with a woman marine that had sat next to me during the trip, but still).

Crazy poo happens on those buses.

WTF and no one decided to actually GET UP and tackle the attacking person? I mean crap! So he`s got a knife. There`s 20 of you and one of him. If everyone attacks at the same time he has no chance. You could end up saving the 19 year old kid, and take down the attacker. Thus getting your ass on the news and famous.
But NO. Everyone sits there and watches like it`s a dratin TV show.
People are so damn stupid.

"He sat in the front at first; everything was normal," Caton said. "We went to the next stop, and he got off and had a smoke with another young lady there. When he got on the bus again, he came to the back near where I was sitting. He put his bags in the overhead compartment. He didn`t say a word to anybody. He seemed totally normal." Half an hour later, the attack began, Caton told the AP. "There was no rage or anything. He was like a robot, stabbing the guy."

Heh heh, yeah, that`s schizophrenia for you!

We are a nation of bystanders. Gutless, cowardly bystanders. Although the whole "decapitation" part of the story is now looking to be an embellishment, you still gotta wonder what sort of person can get away with a murder on a crowded bus without any interuption.

I`m actually more sickened by the people who did nothing than the guy who committed the act. You can probably chalk his issue up to a mental illness of some sort, but it takes an absolute coward to see that go down and simply run away.

And before you start going on saying "You weren`t there Cash, you would have been scared too" - I`ve actually been in a pretty vicious fight on the top of a double-decker bus against 3 punks causing crap and the same thing happened. Nobody wanted to do the right thing and lend a hand.
