Link: Atom-Smasher, Will it Destroy Earth? - In August this year, scientists will activate this machine, but critics think it will most likely destroy Earth.

Wow, that`s mighty complicated. It would be awesome if they accidentally created a time machine!

Oh, and a one-in-fifty-million chance of the world somehow being destroyed? I`m gonna take my chances, what with a person being more likely to be killed by a vending machine than that happening.

It`s thought to be fired sometime around august...and not be able to reach the level needed for possibly months after firing? so...it`ll work NEXT year? Meh, i don`t care now. I`ll worry in 09`

Hilarious. With everything that happens in science there is always someone to stand behind it and point a dooms-day finger. Nuclear energy. If used right would solve our energy crises and is extremely safe so long as procedures are followed (by GOD just like automobiles and believe it or not.. chemistry.) and of course the atom machine. which is expected to produce miniature black-holes smaller than an atom, which scientists have found form all over in the universe. from earth to the most distant stars.. lasting only a few micro-seconds...

If this thing does end the world.. then I welcome it.. because out of all the ways to go.. being sucked in by a man-created black hole has GOT to look pretty damn awesome.

It will be awesome if this leads to a creation of a wormhole device that enables instant teleportation across vast distances. Like in the movie Stargate. I hope this leads to something extraordinary, like the gateway to "Imaginationland~"

Whether for or against this machine, it`s about time something in the scientific community (aside from the usual spacewalks) made it to the front line of the press, instead of the latest Brangelina/SimpsoBritney garbage. Kudos to the news for once.

lol you guys know that the most vocal campaigner against the LHC also had a campaign to stop the last big collider they built with exactly the same reasons

the 1 in fifty million thing is a pushas well, its a one in fifty million chance of creating a micro black hole, which by current theory (which the LHC will help prove or disprove) would expend all its energy in the form of hawking radiation before it did any real damage (of course that still means an explosion but its not like we`d lose half the planet just bits of france and switzerland)

In actuality the scientists are looking for the Higgs Boson, the missing link in the creation of modern particles, if it exists it will further solidify the big bang theory and the current model of particle evolution

of course the LHC will be used for other things as well but the higgs boson is the most important to the physicists

But what happens if they isolate or create a higgs boson? The main particle which gives mass to objects would have to be ridiculously dense, and by that it may have it`s own gravitational field, so would act similarly to a black whole without having some f the other properties that Hawking predicts

The creation of a wormhole is possible as is the ceation of a black hole which when created will be going at a fast speed and bending light around it in an orbit at the same time well do the math when going near the speed of light its like (alot + alot / some quantum mathmatics mumbo = a bit more). My point is that the light orbitting around the plantet would be a gateway a couple of seconds into the past in roughly the same place.

Reasons why LHC could destroy the world. In Hitchkers guide to the galaxy it was a belief for some aliens that once you know what the universe is about then it will be replaced by a more complicated one (this isn`t the first time this has been stated).

It is a well known fact that smart people have killed alot more people than dumb people

    cya next doomsday though

    Fu¢king ignorant doomsday naysayers.

Black holes are created all the time in other Coliders, They evaporate right away. And that Mythical particle? We never even detected it anywhere. And that would just wither away / deterorate before any damage can be done.

I really don`t get people that try to block science for no reason at all. Maybe they want the media attention or something, I don`t know.

i just saw this on yahoo 3 minutes ago. its my homepage. and anyways this was also on the 5 ways to end the earth thing last month. some one in the comments box on yahoo said "even if the black hole forms our deaths will be quick and painless. look at the bright side." IF THERE IS NO ATOM SMASHER WE WONT DIE. THAT IS A BRIGHTER SIDE. this will destroy mother nature made billions of years ago and been supporting for billions of years. why take chances of killing our selves? arent we living te life? cars houses. why take chances to learn something when it could kill you? knoledge wont come to the rescue. animals live without the knowledge of space and time and physics. they have been living for millions of years. why cant we stay where we are.

I highly doubt it`s that dangerous.

..BUT, may they all burn in Hell for eternity if they take the life of my baby girl and destroy this world in the process just for "scientific knowledge". ;)

Unfortunately I wouldn`t be here to take revenge :(...heheh (ponders afterlife revenge..oh yeah)

    if it works, interesting.
if it kills us, even more interesting.
and killing ourselves by making a black hole would
be a less lame way to go than a nuke tossing contest.
or getting boiled by the Co2 of death

heh, i believe if it DOES create a black hole, that we all will be transported to another dimension, along with earth and our solar system shortly after. O, and since our galaxy is going to crash into the Andromeda Galaxy in about 2000 years, the black hole will partly destroy that galaxy. Sweet, Sweet Revenge. >:)

oh drat no the worlds not endin yet! the hell w/ science id rather live than take the drating change of dying. wtf are scientists thinking?? WHY TAKE THE CHANCE??!!! thats BS if you wanna see what happens make a mini one and put it in your house so a giant black hole swallows you and your house. dont put the lives of innocent people at risk just because you wanna see what will happen.

Um ok, I don`t care what the chances are, if there`s one chance at all the the ENTIRE EARTH could actually be DESTROYED, then its probably not worth it, hm? I`d rather never know about dark matter, and still be alive! Seriously, does anyone really think this is worth it? It`s the first time (that I know of) that humans have done something that could destroy the planet instantly. Crazy scientests! It was nice knowing you, IAB friends- enjoy your last month of life! (jk on that last part...I`m sure we`ll be ok, I just think its a dumb idea). (Let`s gamble cool scientific discoveries against, say, the existence of our planet. Good idea, right?)

Actually, it`ll probably be fine until 2012, then it will killl us all (supposedly the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 so the world is going to end then because the Mayans knew everything). (Aliens told them of course- Indian Jones explains everything! LOL.)

"I`m pretty sure that it`s not going to destroy earth... I mean, you wouldn`t stop walking on the sidewalk because of the small chance (much larger chance than an atom smasher making a black hole, to be precise) that a car will veer out and hit you."

But doesn`t the use of alcohol and the operation of a motor vehicle substantially raise that risk? :(

    Doomsday:
Assuming black hole theory 100% correct
-We get destroyed very very very slowly, very painful as everything gets "spaghettied" into eachother
-No possible way of stopping it unless had something equivalent to a nova bomb which would just insta obliderate the solar system.
-This new particle is able to sustain itself and produces same effect as a star`s gravitational pull, pulling in parts of the solar system.
    Non doomsday:
Assuming hawkings radiation theory is correct
-Blackholes will die as soon as they are born
-We discover new methods of travel, energy use and things of our wildest imagination.
    Prevention of this ever happening:
-Courts decide not to allow this to happen.
    -"Terrorists" permantently deactivate the apparatus.
-We create a wormhole with the technology and earth gets pulled into a time looping thing so we experience the same fate up until the worm hole for the rest of eternity all over again and again and
