I think the worse thing to see besides a woman being made fun of or put down because she is a woman, is seeing the women accept this. It`s not acceptable, I`m sorry to say.

Feminists are obnoxious. This is largely due to people forgetting the etymology of the words, "man/men"

    man referred to all humans
The female version of it would be, "WOman"
The male version of it would use, "WERE something"

anyway, the word "woman" is still used, and people stopped using "were" The only time that is used today is in the word , "werewolf"

so yeah, what happened was, the word women remained and the word for males fell out of use. So, yeah using the word men is meant to be sexist. Spending money on changing wording is just a waste, and it is just serves to undermind modern feminism. Such arguments are just overbearing and have little real effect on society.

Can someone please name me one thing a woman can do that a man can`t?? Aside from anything biological like birth giving and all that.

are7era, thank God you exist. What`s so wrong about wanting to change the sign to make it inclusive of the women who work as well? It`s not so much that the signs reflect the sexist attitudes of the actual men working there, it`s that they don`t reflect inclusive attitudes. They`re outdated, and potentially offensive, so they shouldn`t be there. No one seemed to have a problem with changing the signs.

Amen to Zevie... everyone is bitching about "feminists" and I don`t see where "feminism" was mentioned ONCE in the news clip. In fact, wasn`t it a MAN at the end of the video giving his little speech about how it was time for a change? Those signs are outdated. It has nothing to do with equality. Grow up.

and to the person who posted:
"oh god! the liberals are breaking into our right of street signs! F cking fascists!"

    Potentially offensive, Zevie?

Can you honestly say that more than half of all women who see a MEN AT WORK sign are even remotely offended by it?

It`s not about satisifying all women because not all women even care. It`s about shutting up a few individuals who look for things to bitch and complain about.

    To Shake and Bake,

One thing a woman can do that a man can`t:

Express an opinion without sounding like a neanderthal.

Oh yeah...and carry and nurture children... I`m sorry, but that trumps your "heavy lifting" qualities that you claim men posses. Giving and sustaining life is the single most important job in the world.

    So suck it.

It has NOTHING to do with equality because (most) women (I am NOT a feminist) already see themselves as equal to men. I couldn`t care less about those signs... but it`s cool to see change in society...especially in a place as culturally dead and regressive as the south.

NO NO, it doesn`t have anything to do with equality. it`s about shutting up some girls who want to cause an accident. when you see a sign that says "MEN AT WORK" you think, "There`s road work ahead! I should slow down and watch where i`m going!" when you see a sign that says "WOMEN AT WORK" you think, "Oh maybe it`s a town meeting. i`ll just get through here as fast as i can!"

I agree about the money part. A congresswoman in my state wants to lower the speed limit from 65mph on highways to 60mph... which she seems to think will save gas and help the environment (stupid)...yet it will cost $$$$$$$ to replace all 5s on those stupid speed limit signs all over the state. I don`t even want to think about how many there must be.

Signs like that may seem innocuous and small, but they are a symptom of something larger.

Masculinity has become a neutral condition in our society. It`s a blanket term for humanity as a whole and a standard for the norm. This reinforces a gender binary. Gender binaries promote inequality, coerced conformity, and intolerance of things outside of the norm.

By having things like "Men at work" Both genders falling under the two-sex model get slighted. Women are seen as abnormal and men are ignored.

Maybe if we start getting rid of crap like "men at work" or "manhole" and other binary terms, we can open up new opportunities for humans to explore their world without the shackles of a socially constructed gender identity.

The `feminists` have been pretty vocal about what they want, but what about you men? How come you can`t play with dolls without Dad worrying you`re a fruit. And why can`t you wear pink? Or a skirt? Why can`t you cry?

you can do it 100 different ways. it all makes up the same thing.

You get no respect for crying. you get no respect for wearing pink (unless your a douchebag, and so are your friends) and we don`t wear skirts because male upskirt cam sites would be made, thus destroying the internet.

Avoiding that I`m not really seeing the connection between your post and hers, I just don`t think that it`s really that big of an issue. They`ve been used for long periods of time and why are they being pointed out now? Because women don`t have anything to complain about right now.

It doesn`t affect me at all whether the sign says "CRAZY MOFOS AHEAD" or "Workers Ahead". As long as it tells me to slow down so I don`t hit somebody. It`s just irritating how the woman in this video makes it sound like it was some diabolical plan to oppress every woman that drives by that sign for however long possible.

Also, the general population fails to realize that equality of any sort will never occur, ever. It`s true.

This is why we all just need to leave each other alone. Look at these comments. We`ve sectioned ourselves off from society so much that we can`t stand each other anymore. Therefor, let`s just pull the plug and concrete ourselves off permanently.

First of all, who gives a damn about exactly what the sign says so long as it does its job - warning you about roadwork. All this change did was correct an inaccuracy, that there might be women working there as well (which there probably aren`t). Oh, that and save on black sign-ink in the long term.

The only shackles of gender identity are the ones you impose yourself. When I was a kid, I played with cars, planes, lego and guns not because I was forced, but because thats what I liked playing with. Thats what it means to be male. Thats just the way it is.

Finally, `men` dont complain about any of this because its not really an issue at all.

sushi I think that`s your own misogyny projecting (i.e. "women don`t have anything to complain about right now.")

Where in the clip is she acting diabolical? I didn`t see any yelling. No fist pounding, no insults. She brings up a good point about the whole "what if it was whites working or jews working?"

It`s an UPDATE. Obviously for the "diabolical" woman and her magazine, it was also business and a point of getting facetime for her and her magazine. Who cares? You sit there and say YOU don`t care...yet you`re taking all the time to respond to my posts to try to continue to make your point all while making it seem as if you view women as equal, which you clearly don`t.

    Tada.

"The earliest known culture to have females wear miniskirts were the Duan Qun Miao, which literally meant "short skirt Miao" in Chinese. This was in reference to the short miniskirts "that barely cover the buttocks" worn by women of the tribe, and which were "probably shocking" to Han Chinese observers in medieval and early modern time"

In my opinion, if feminists want to be treated equally as men, they should stop insulting the other gender. Insulting the opposite sex by calling them `fat slobs` etc. only makes you as bad as the chauvinists you`re fighting against. Why can`t everyone just get along...

Do you even read my posts?

    Read CAREFULLY.

I`m saying the woman was acting like it was some intentional ("diabolical") plan that men made to oppress women.

I said I don`t care whether the sign changes or not.

So stop calling me a misogynist when that term has a far stronger meaning than you probably understand. I don`t view women as unequal, I`m just annoyed how you seem to attack me personally (e.g. "a young southerner", "your own misogyny projecting) when you don`t even take the time to fully understand my posts before replying.

What the duck would they call them?
    "peopleholes"?

also the reason i dont cry is because i CAN`T like most guys i lost the ability to cry at about 9 or 10 because men start holding in their emotions around that age because as they are becoming men they want to seem manly, and after holding in your emotions that long you eventually become literally un-able to expess them.
I kinda feel like an ass though because even at funerals i literally CANNOT cry.

There are real, physical and mental differences between men and women, something which the campaigns for political correctness try to overlook. Recordings of firefighter training, for example, have showed situations in which women were given lower standards as many were unable to complete the physical tests. Construction work, being physically demanding, has long been a `man`s job`. To be quite blunt, most women aren`t physically suited to the task.

I`m not making a blanket statement. There are women that are more than capable. And there are men who are not. But to suggest that both sexes are equally able is just stupid. And on that ground alone, I think a `Men at work` sign is perfectly justified.

This is a stupid, stupid point.

There is nothing significantly physically or mentally different between a Christian and a Jew, or a black and a white.

If you think there are no significant differences between men and women... Hoo boy.

The idea that men are physically incapable of crying is laughable. So is the idea that there exists some kind of "man" condition where pink becomes rash causing and dudes in skirts destroy the internet.

You fellas need to treat yourself to some education.

That kind of closed-minded attitude that suggests emotions and the conveying of them signifies weakness is the root of insanity. And it`s the kind of thing that spawns hate crimes. Read Freud.

I recommend that you do some studying on the archaeology and anthropoolgy of sex and gender. Read Benjamin Alberti. You will learn that our contemporary gender standards are not innate biologically. Everyone likes to cite caveman days about the "natural order of things" and it`s not true. There were even native American tribes that sported third and fourth genders. And the first Catholic Weddings were male/male.

Now, I just have one question:

    xtkm1x, you have Asperger`s, right?

I think that it`s sexist to demand such a change in these signs. So women should get this sign change just because they`re women? Just because they work in a male-dominated field, we should say, "Oh, there are women working in this male-dominated field! Let`s do something special for them because they are women working in a male-dominated field!" So what if they are construction workers! I`m all for equality, but, like it or not, established norms are going to be established norms, and they more than likely won`t change any time in the near future-- think about the life-span of a period of a language. The woman seeking this change read too far into this "potentially offensive" matter and decided to get aggravated about it and whine.

It should also be noted, that men and women, are not equal. We`re different, that`s just how it is. We`re not better or worse than each other, we`re just different. We should have equal rights, and if people think the sign is offensive, it should be changed. And as for feminists, they are much, much more discriminating against men, than most men are to women. They view most, if not all, men as chauvanistic(sp?) pigs, who are only out to put women down. They think we`re stupid, fat, slobs, who don`t have enough higher level brain functions to do anything besides food. In other words, they`re hippocrits.

Hmmm...I wonder where we crazy women get those ideas...

I find it funny that while you tote that you are totally for equal rights, you frequently refer to men as cavemen and `unable to put a point accross`. I liked how you completely dissmissed that guy`s argrument because there was one spelling error. And what about all those single and stay-at-home dads? Are they not raising their children properly?

"Hmmm...I wonder where we crazy women get those ideas..."

Indeed! There is not a soul in the world who could perhaps be in a rush, be using a handheld device like a phone or PSP, make a simple spelling error, or accidentally hit too many buttons. Obviously, any spelling error should be seen as a mark of lower intelligence, since as we all know spelling while typing and spelling while writing are entirely synonymous.

    So suck it.

Wow Seven1Eight2, I just don`t know how to break this to you. There`s the obvious way of pointing it out to you. The subtle way of just posting this and letting you realize. Such a tough choice. I always have a difficult time deciding how best to call out stupid people.

    ...like their head."

Ah, so, insulting men with a neanderthic taunt while saying they can only express their opinions is sarcasm? Unfortunately, it is only sarcasm when the user doesn`t believe what theyre saying and is making an obvious point of that. The word you need to look up is "hypocrite."

See, most men posting here are idiots. However, idiots posting to a display of idiot feminism, thats fine. What feminists don`t realizeis that you can be sexist against men too. Saying that every man is like something, well, have you met every man in the world? Just goes to show you, no matter what you protest, you`re gonna look like an idiot.

#1. You`re WAY too easy to rile
#2. This story has little to do with feminism. It has to do with progress.

I think men and women both deserve the dignity of having the sign be gender non-specific. Bottom line. Just because it has been one way for so long doesn`t mean it can`t or shouldn`t change.

too easy to rile? I posted one comment, then came back when I saw the comment count has gone over a hundred. I saw you has posted at least twice on every page. So, you`re sitting here watching the comments, posting at people you don`t agree with, at least 8 times so far, and you think I`m the one too easily riled up? You really should look up Hypocrite.

As far as progress, no, changing that sign wasn`t progress. The signs purpose was, and is, to keep the workers, men or women, from being run over. If a woman sees this sign, and the first thought she thinks is "thats offensive!" and not "I`d better slow down amnd watch out to avoid running over someone," then she is an idiot. Changing the sign was a womans idea, progress`s idea would be people being better drivers as to not need them in the first place.

That sign isn`t disservicing anyone, it`s servicing the workers trying to do their job while dodging two-ton mechanical deathtraps. If feminists want to campaign against something thats actually doing a disservice to both genders, how about Kentucky`s law that a man can get a vasectomy whenever he wants, but a woman can`t get her tubes tied without a husbands written consent and has to have 1 child? That`s an actual example of discrimination I`d be all up for changing.

so any one else fail to realize that the color "pink" (also being used as the title for the feminist magazine) is usually used to describe women, as blue is used for men? my oh my i smell an equally stupid debate right there. Maybe we should all just become like the neutral planet from Futurama maybe then everyone will shut up and stop making ridiculous arguments for the sake of arguing or trying to one up the other sex. for Christs sake we are all equal who gives a damn what a sign says? or what sex, color, or race you are we are are still only one thing any guess`s? right human beings. shut it

Have been an I-A-B fan for a while and have finally seen a post i could not sit and let pass. Seven1Eight2`s "it`s cool to see change in society...especially in a place as culturally dead and regressive as the south," strikes a chord with me because I have travelled the world with my family in the Air Force, and there is little to no difference between California and Georgia... Sure the majority of southeners that make the national news are those that come running from their classy double-wide trailers to the scene and express as intelligibly as a fourth-grade education will promit about the unfolding event, but they do not represent the whole population. Simply putting you and your state on a pedastool above a select group of people is no better than what this pathetic marketing tool is "fighting" against. Degrading B.S. Please sensor your typing unless you really want to ellaborate on what you believe the definition of regressive is.

this reminds me of a news story about lead paint in park swings. the city was forced to remove all of the swing sets in all of the parks ( some had been there since the `50s ) it then took 3 years for some of the parks to get new swings. People should offer a fix ( other than one that cost millions ) or a time line to get the problem corrected . i guess what i am saying is don`t cause a bigger problem than the ` problem `. if she is upset at a road sign to warn drivers of a danger ahead then she should be pissed at the fact that `ERA` laundry detergent is spelled `E R A` (equal rights admenment) so shut up and do the laundry... <--just a joke , but you see where this could go.

Hmmm i have mixed feelings about the whole feminist movement...but i do think this whole sign thing is uneccessary and a waste of time and money.
Why do feminists need to try to prove themselves as equal to men within the workforce? I think we, as a planet (even the women), have forgotten just how important women are to society as a whole. Women already have the ability to create, carry, and protect life. Isn`t childbirth important or honorable enough? What can men do? Men can hunt, kill, build. But now Women want to do all of that too. That`s why men are scared of Feminists. If feminists show themselves as equal to men, they are actually showing they are superior because of their already existing lifegiving abilities...
So where does that leave the men? Inadequate? Unneccessary?
After centuries of Patriarchal religious oppression, Feminism, while trying to prove a woman`s worth, is actualy denying men their own.

RebelComix, women don`t want to just be recognized for their biological roles anymore. I mean, as human beings we are more than just baby machines. It`s disrespectful if all women are honored for is their capacity to give birth. It would be like honoring men only for their sperm, and as we all know men are worth very much more as human beings. I mean there is a person connected to that dick. :) By working, women are not trying to be better than men, they are trying to gain equal respect as men. It is not a statement of the uselessness of men if women work, it is nothing less than a affirmation of common humanity.

This sounds an awful lot like "Birth Envy" from that anthropoloical tract I read. In it the male author says men have historically felt inferior to women in the reproductive arena and felt like incomplete people due to the fact that they can`t give birth. So to make up for what men can`t do, they told women that they may not do other things, like work or become clergy. Of course this is talking about thousands of years of history of course.

Let this small group of people complaining pay for the new signs, then.

Lets see you give life without my dick."

Nah, we only need your sperm. You need not be present. ;)

"By working, women are not trying to be better than men, they are trying to gain equal respect as men."

Actually, as a working woman, I`m just trying to pay my bills. I could give a f*ck less if I`m respected for working.

I thought it was because the men didn`t work. >.>

I`m female, but not a feminist. Sure, women should have equal rights, but getting pissy over a sign is too much. >.>

It`s apparent in the reactions to this post that we still have a long way to go to do away with misogyny. Theologians and anthropologists have long studied the male-as-normative ideas in our culture. They have shown the vastly negative effects of this premise for BOTH men and women.

I don`t think that this change is "political correctness." Political correctness most often replaces an accurate term with a euphemism (e.g. termination instead of abortion).

This is the reverse: the city decided to create MORE accurate signs. Wouldn`t it be nice if every sign you saw as you drive around was actually accurate?

Knew it was feminists. Get over it. It`s a freaking sign. The most it`s doing is calling the women working there men. Discrimination it ain`t.

Trivial and lame. Why don`t you get yourself this worked up about unequal gender-based wages and fight a good fight?
