I grew up on the Calif coast and was taught that rays will leave you alone if you leave them alone. You pretty much have to step on something in order for it to hurt you. Actually in Catalina Island the rays would congregate under a floating diving platform that us kids would hold onto. You could see their shadows under there- they may have been the younger ones there for shelter. Rarely would anyone ever get hurt. I`ll bet alot more people get bitten by dogs than stung by rays...(I`m guessing) And all the people who don`t believe- why on earth did you doubt? That`s just silly! Many ocean creatures swim in schools- you know that`s true. And many animals do those massive migrations, you know that`s true- so what`s so unbelievable about this?? Silly kids! B-|

Alright, time for a biologist to pop in, eh?

1) These aren`t "sting" rays. They are pelagic rays, most of which actually don`t have any kind of barb at the base of their tails (including the giant manta ray of which someone posted a pic). So actually, unless one of these rammed you, they`re actually incredibly harmless.
2) The story of the woman killed by a jumping ray is actually only partially true. The ray was a either a spotted eagle-ray or a cow-nosed ray and she was never punctured by a barb, but was hit by the ray and hit her head. The blow to her head was what killed her, although the ray was an indirect result of her death.

All those still shouting "shopped" should go look at Ani`s link on page one (which is evidence from the photographer with more angles and creatures), and my links on page two (showing other occurances similar to this one), and stop looking like `tards.

OMG they planned this! Pretend to be docile, wait till steve irwin comes into the water unprepared, assassinate him and then no man will have the guts to stop the sting ray army!

Leesah, I know it was an accidental death, but the idea is still slightly worrisome. With all those rays about the chances could be greater that one might jump and sting you in the neck.
Honestly, if I were there I probably wouldn`t be thinking about the fact that they`ve killed people, I`d be too focused on the awesomeness of that sight. But, sitting at my desk at home, my mind can wander and I can remember weird stories and freak accidents.
Besides, it gave me something to say.

"I`d be nervous especially considering the story not too long ago about the woman who was boating with her family when a sting ray jumped out of the water and stabbed her."

But that was a giant spotted ray, wasn`t it? As far as I know, the little ones are quite friendly. My grandparents live on the Gulf and there was a little sting ray in the bay that liked the color of my sandals, and he was perfectly okay with sucking on them while I rubbed his back.

& even in the story you`re talking about, that was an unfortunately timed jump by the ray, it`s not like it wanted to kill the lady. It also happened to an eighty or so year old man, but I think he lived.

There are no waves coz the boat is travelling forwards, the pic is taken looking out from the bow, so the waves the boat is making arent in the pic. Another explanation is that the boat is moored up.
I think the pic is real...its a LOT of work to shop that.

"If you have ever actually seen a school of stingrays in person, you wouldn`t doubt the picture so much. Honestly."

I was thinking the same thing. I was at a beach in Florida, on some ropes that were around a bunch of rocks, and when I was about to jump down I looked down and saw a swarm of sting rays while they were feeding.

I`m from Florida, I`ve seen them in person (my friend actually got stung in the foot about 6 years ago; always SHUFFLE your feet) and in larger quantities in captivity. I was at the Georgia Aquarium just about a month ago, and they have a huge tank with 3 whale sharks and probably 300 rays that just follow the sharks around. This isn`t so farfetched.

I went once and fed a bunch of stingrays off the coast of Cayman and those things are pushy when you get into the water, but they feel really cool.

"lol, the evil flying ninja stingray, leaped out of the water, machete in hand and planted it firmly into her chest"

Which just made my day. Thank you the for imagery. C:
I like how the news story related to that used half the article to assure the good folks at home that stringrays are "not known to be aggressive in any way." Right.

By the way, amazing (and yes--eerie) shot.
Thanks for the link Ani187; with all the "SHOPPED" screams, I was starting to doubt it myself. XD
Your link restored my faith in the interwebz. Hooray!

The Advertising Standards Authority has ordered an Australian sunscreen manufacturer whose products were endorsed by Steve Irwin to pull their adverts, stating that their claim "protects from all harmful rays" was misleading.

Right, I seem to have found the origin of this picture. It`s copyrighted to one Sandra Critelli, a photographer from Italy. She posted it onto pbase (never heard of it before) the 28th of July last year. Seems legit considering she`s got a whole series of stingray photos that look like they were taken on the same day. Here`s the link if anyone`s interested.

"How can a bot as big as that one seems not make waves?"
First off, how can you tell it`s such a big boat?
Secondly, it could just be anchored there and not moving..

Cool picture nonetheless.
