I`d be more concerned about body odor. And I personally wouldn`t like to play a game of "Who`s in my crack?" while on my way to work.

"when my dad went to japan he said they didnt push people inside like that when a westerner was on the train"

I can just imagine how delightfully awkward that would be. I want to go there to see their reaction to a foreigner`s presence on the train now. X3 Would they be grateful for not getting shoved in like livestock, or would they be mad that less people could ride at a time?

Living in such a crowded place and being shoved against random strangers everyday must make those people less socially awkward. I live in the suburbs, and even sitting next to a stranger on a slightly overcrowded bus is a grumblemoangrumble kind of thing.

i honestly find that to be quite scary. not only does it seem inhumane (and says alot about the japanese`s absolute lack of patience to just wait for the next train) but i would get severely claustoraphobic being so completely trapped in a little metal box with 50 other people with no space to move or even breath. it`s disturbing.

^ I really don`t think it has much to do with the fact that they`re Japanese; people in general are just impatient.

Why does it have to have anything to do with a lack of patience? That`s only looking at it from one angle. I saw it as a more time and energy efficient way of traveling. It`s not inhumane, because no one`s dying or in trouble, and the people are obviously willing to do it, or else they WOULD wait for the next train.

I thought it looked wonderfully efficient o.o, and would feel pretty bad if people ended up late to where they were going just `cause I showed up on the train and they wouldn`t do this anymore >>.

    Heh
I went to Japan last August.
    1) you get on at rush hour, Japanese people will not make allowances for you. One time at Shinjuku I had body contact with 5 people it was that many people. When the train turned a bend, you and everyone else would lean/be pushed as one mass of people flesh. Shinjuku alone handles 1.2 million people per day.
    2) not much point in waiting for next train, that one will be just as full. Some stations would be that busy for at least an hour in the evening. And the Yamanote line get a train about every 5 mins.
    3) yes bo is a danger. Especially as Japanese people don`t as a rule, use deodorant. Sometimes it gets pretty bad. If you have ever been in a mosh pit, you can get an idea of what it can be like.
    4) Japanese people treat getting that vacant seat like a sport, you have to be quick. Especially against the pushy obasans (they don`t care who they knock out of the way), so yes they will sit next to you if that seat is vacant.
