oh yay, now this kid can grow up to be a corporal punishment supporting, Ebonics speaking, ipod stealing douche bag- just like his mom!

any parent with enough knowledge about child care knows that the proper way to discipline your child is to focus on rewarding good behavior over punishing the bad behavior. If his mom was a good parent, she would have implemented that form of discipline in the child`s earlier years, and thus prevented the kid from stealing the ipod in the first place.

and maybe if the mom got a decent job, she could afford to buy her son an ipod.

    epic fail.

This woman isn`t the first to do this. Another woman did this to her son for cutting school. But I agree that sometimes embarassment will do wonders for a bad-ass kid.

bassstud...what makes you think that she doesn`t have a decent job? Or make you think that she speaks "Ebonics"? There was no comment that said anything about her stealing anything. Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but the opinion should be based on something real.

Wow, I hope none of you ever become parents. Kids deserve respect just like adults and the only thing this kid will gain is a hatred for his mother.

and the suprising thing is people in the 13-17 age group support this even though I doubt any of you would agree with a similar punishment if you where caught say, doing drugs.

Its probably because all of the teens on here are angry and moody and as a result hate other people in their age group. hopefully you`ll gain some perspective when your older

    what the drat.

you parent people by teaching them
    not punishing them.
they need to learn from their own mistakes, not learn that, "OMG I BETTER FOLLOW THE RULES OR MOMMAS GONNA BEAT ME (or publicly humiliate)."

because when they`re in college and their parents aren`t there, they`re gonna break the rules all the time, because they`re not afraid of their parents...

The way the mother handled this was WRONG.

Giving the kid a "surprise" punishment, deciding to make it longer, deciding to move him to another place. Come on! It really sounds like the mom was basking in all the attention she was getting.

I agree that it`s important for parents to reinforce school discipline, and that some punishment was most likely warranted. Maybe she could have discussed what happened with him and how he SHOULD have behaved, and then explained how and why she was going to discipline him. I personally don`t believe in humiliation as punishment, but either way this was going too far.

Althought it was a bit too extreme. I think she should`ve stopped at making him wear the sign in public for an hour or so at most.

But everyone having a heart attack needs to calm down. It`s her kid, she can punish him how she wants. It`s better than a beating.

i applaud the mother. many mothers would just tell their kid that its a "no-no". They dont even intervene. This mother actually wanted to teach her kid a lesson. Chances are he wont be doing this again. Embaressment is the best punishment.

And for all you people who are negatives to this, kids rarely listen to regular punishments. Talking it out calmly and nicely almost never works. Nor does just punishing someone and not discussing it. I can bet she had a long and angry talk with her son after the punishment.

    Doesn`t look lie a stereo-typical bully.

Punishment by humiliation is poor parenting, and will probably damage the kid even more.
Would have been more appropriate to get him to compensate (not financially)the victim of the crime instead.

YES! This is the breakthrough all modern parents are looking for. We live in a world where parents are afraid of their kids. They can`t discipline them normally without raising red flags to Child Services, kids threaten to report "abusive" parents to the cops, etc etc. This is the newfound loophole, the Diet Coke of Discipline--all the emotional scarring of a beating with half the guilt!
On the downside, I think it is rather lazy. You can have total strangers lay into your kid for being a bastard instead of doing it yourself. Oh well, it`s still creative.

Awww I thought this was cute! Reminded me of an old friend of mine. He once told me he disrespected his mom, so as punishment his mom embarrassed the hell out of him. She came to school during his lunch break dressed up as a clown, walked up to the middle of the cafeteria and had the principal announce via a microphone who she was and why she was there. He said she even started speaking in a clown voice. Awww parents :-D

All of you people talking about his mom not teaching him... Do you really think she did not teach him already that stealing was wrong? The kid`s 12 years old, not 4... he knows better by now. The type of behaviour he was demonstrating it is propagated because kids think they can get away with this kind of thing.

It is pretty serious that he assaulted some kid to get an iPod simply because he "wanted one"... it is either extremely childish or perhaps a sign that he`s taking a turn down the wrong path... the latter being very serious and the former just being very ridiculous and embarrassing.

I think he had a lot of time to think about what he did while he was out there, and I think he realized how ridiculous he was when he tried to steal the iPod... at least I hope he realized it... I mean come on, maybe when you`re 3 and you snatch a toy or stuffed animal but not when you`re 12! So stop ragging on the mom, it wasn`t perfect what she did but it is damn-sure effective.

I laugh at all the people who say ZOMG KID GON BE SCARRED!!!1!!!1!one. This is North America`s problem. You have parents afraid to dicipline their kids because of what child services might do, and the kids know that. Then the kid has all the power. If I screwed up as a kid, I got the strap, and you know what? It worked. I`m not scarred, violent, or a delinquent. If anything, I`m a better person. Dicipline is not abuse. Sometimes kids need a good spanking, or something like this. If I have kids, and they pull this crap, this is in my books as a viable option for punishment.

Though, I wouldn`t put it on the news... That`s just being an attention whore.

`he doesn`t seem like someone who would beat someone for an ipod, he was kinda quiet and polite O_o`
Of course he seemed polite, he`s getting the punishment of his life and apparently it`s working. The world should have no tolerance for Bullies.

doesn`t seem like a bad idea to me. and he was a bit more than bullying, he was trying to intimidate the other kid so he could steal his ipod. Those of you who say that you need to treat a kid like an adult (igaboo) you`ve obviously missed the various punishments that have gone on nation wide where judges have ordered theives and such to stand in public with signs and such. Just telling a kid that what they did is wrong isn`t always the best answer. what was she supposed to do "snowflake, you shouldn`t be mean to kids to try and take their stuff, just ask me and i`ll buy you the ipod!" yea, that`s effective...

I, for one, think that woman`s a crazy bitch.

Kids will be kids. If he wants an iPod, he`s going to be checking out other kids` iPods. Maybe he`d be feeling agressive that day and would start to "bully" a little bit.

That was the most awesome punishment ever. That kid isn`t going to be bullying anyone again. Walking around in the hot sun with a sandwich board and a DUMB hat on for hours. ahahahaha! He learned his lesson.

AT LAST! an example of a mother who is actively taking control in teaching and raising her child. If only more people were this involved with their children.

That mother is amazing. I`m glad she stepped up like that and made her child do that. Seriously, you can spank and ground your child all you want. That doesn`t do crap anymore. Public embarrassment for something they did wrong? BEAUTIFUL.

..and here I thought public humiliation, as a form of punishment, went out of style in the middle ages.

Definitely the worst thing I`ve seen this week.

did the mom already have the board and the hat ready? or did she just make it when she foud out? what kind of person do you have to be to put a 12 year old kid on the streets of n.y telling everybody hes dumb...wait, if it was my kid, i probably would have done the same thing.
    nevermind

but yes, i agree with the mom. embarassment is the worst. for anybody. unless the kid is an attention whore, then you cant do it, because they will enjoy being the center of attention.

and plus the fact that the kid had to be on the streets, and tv, AND the internet. poor kid. he deserved it.

but, i tell you, ipods are taking over the world.

i totally agree with what the mom did, i know when i get lectures all i wanna do is leave and i don`t listen because i`m annoyed. they don`t do much good.
but, if my mom ever made me do that, i`d be pretty miserable. i`d learn my lesson, though.

and to all the people saying spankings don`t work -- they do, at least with me. at first i was a good kid because i was afraid of being spanked, but now that i`m older i know what`s right and wrong, and am capable of making decisions myself. and i have morals and values that are nicely drilled into my head.

I think the mom was right on this one. She said it herself, she was doing it because she loved him. I`m sure when this guy grows up and has kids of his own, he`ll do something like this if his kids act up.

I remember hating my parents whenever I was punished. But I quickly got over that, and as I matured, I knew they punished me out of love so I`d know right from wrong. This kid will figure that out, if he hasn`t already.

"I laugh at all the people who say ZOMG KID GON BE SCARRED!!!1!!!1!one. This is North America`s problem."

I kind of agree there, but it`s not just North America, you know. A lot of parents like to spoil their kids rotten, and their kids learn to have little respect for their parents and for others. Either that, or they don`t want to bother raising kids. People need to start waking up!!

The mother was parenting well here. She saw behavior that was grossly unacceptable and acted swiftly and justly to correct it.

He won`t hate his mother. Eventually, he`ll grow up and realize that she was doing her best to save him from a life of trouble.

It`s not like he got an F on his algebra test. He assaulted a kid!!! It`s totally inappropriate behavior and it must be dealt with accordingly. I find that embarassment and temporary social outcasting is an effective way of correcting unacceptable behavior.

    Kudos to mom.

On one hand I feel for the kid being embarassed; I mean, who wouldn`t be? On the other, the kid probably knew his mom had hit the ceiling before and this incident of BULLYING, was the last straw. Kudos to Mom; too many times today we are so utterly full of rationalizations about kids; they beat up other kids, they disrupt classrooms, they threaten and sometimes, even attack teachers, and at times, parents accept it!

Nah, this kid got off lucky; his mom cares enough not to give a flying flip of how wrong it looks.

    He should have been spanked.

Of course a slap on the wrist and being told, "Don`t do that again" works in theory, but not reality. Just like communism, look at Russia!
