"At a press conference on Monday, December 3, 2007, Jack Banas, the prosecuting attorney of St. Charles County, said that Lori Drew`s 18-year-old temporary employee, Ashley Grills, wrote most of the messages addressed to Meier and that she wrote the final "Josh Evans" message addressed to Meier. Grills said she wrote the final message to end the MySpace hoax and get Megan Meier to stop communicating with `Josh Evans.`" - wikipedia

"And even though its on the internet comments like what the woman wrote can be harmful emotionally as if a person in real life said it"

Not really. I`ve been called and told some pretty awful things about myself on the internet by countless strangers, a few I counted as e-Friends.

It sucks, it hurts, but if you aren`t a complete `tard you`ll suck it up and get over it like every other normal human.

I know that the girl was going to far and killed herself, but look at the other side. This woman in her 40`s disguises herself as a 16 year old boy, so she can manipulate the girl into thinking that she is having a future boyfriend, and then just absolutely crushed her feelings. She is heartless. And the parents have to live through that. She could get AT LEAST 10 years jail time.

"Were it not for this woman, there is a very very very good chance that she would be alive today. It should be that simple."

Doesn`t work that way. If I go kill myself for the sole reason that you exist, you are not to blame for it simply because your existence caused my suicide. She kept returning to the conversations, kept on talking more.

hmm i dont want to get caught in the argument but i disagree almost entirely with Iroj

also, maybe the girl wasn`t necessarily completely in love with this "Josh" but just felt he was the only one she could trust. And even though its on the internet comments like what the woman wrote can be harmful emotionally as if a person in real life said it, just not nearly as harmful.

This is why our legal system is horrible.

A girl is dead. Were it not for this woman, there is a very very very good chance that she would be alive today. It should be that simple.

Unfortunately, our legal system has nothing to do with justice...

gregoryn- its till wrong what she did. dont give me that freedom of speech shield.and fetish, like that makes it all right? "oh its a fetish then heck its okay let her go." it boils down to this. she did a hurtful spiteful evil thing and should be held accountable for her actions! regardless of the "factors" wether or not the girl killed herself or if her actions caused the suicide. doesnt matter. she did wrong she should have to take responibility for her actions. period.

Apparently not, catbarf (especially not the /b/ board). Dear god, if some random guy you don`t know tells you that the world would be a better place without you, you suck it up and move on. Unfortunately hormones can get the best of you at such an age, but come on, killing yourself? I am probably the most out of the loop, unliked kid in the entire school i go to, with kids mocking me left and right for kicks, but you don`t see me wanting to commit suicide. And I`m the same age as her.

The girl was in a bad state of mind. They took it, gave her someone to trust, then "he" told her that the world would be a better place without her. She obviously wasn`t in the best state if she killed herself because of something online, but I don`t understand is why a mother would get in on that? The mother is childish, and should be charged on other things, such as violation of the site, but sadly I dont think she should be charged for convincing her to commit suicide. The girl did that on her own instead of talking to her parents, or talking to someone about the "boy" that was a total jerk. :S

Because, 18-29 Southern girl, nothing in the world forced her to go get harassed on the Internet. Nobody came into her house and degraded her, and there was not a damn thing that required the idiot to go on the computer.

Oh, she had problems before the incident? Whoop-de-frickin`-do. Does it make sense to you to arrest a teenager because he called someone a name, and they committed suicide due to their issues?

She gets insulted. She goes back, and gets insulted again. She KEEPS ON RETURNING to the website, and keeps getting degraded. Then she kills herself.

Dear god, have any of these people been to 4chan?

I think a lot of people don`t know what went on with this little girl before this incident and to say the women is not at fault is ridiculous. How can you say a logical adult should be able to pull a low degrading prank on some 13 year old like this especially without thinking about consequences. I say she deserves to toss people`s salads for the rest of her days.

--
(there`s a statute in Portuguese law about inciting suicide and getting 1-5 yrs with a victim of <16 yrs.)
the woman, while her actions were somewhat "wrong", should not be charged with anything-- it`s not like she planned on the girl killing herself, however malicious her words.
the parents of the girl, as well, should not be charged with anything-- what conspired online was out of their control.

all I see is that some emotionally-fragile teenager killed herself over some few-weeks-long internet relationship. happens all the time in real life relationships too. we just don`t hear about those.

Be empathetic or apathetic, but don`t be an non-nice individual. have a little compassion. it just really sucks that people feel this way about a person that felt they couldn`t take it anymore. Even if it doesn`t seem like a big deal to you, it was obviously a huge deal to her.

The woman being charged is just being spiteful, but if the girl killed herself just because of what that woman did, chances are that if the woman never messed with her in the first place, she could just as easily get lured in by online predators. This case is sad, but if anything, makes a point not to trust strangers on the internet. Don`t they teach this stuff in schools anymore?

It is basically broken down as this:
The woman has a freedom of speech. Arresting her for saying things to a 13 year old girl is her right. She can in no way be punished for talking to this girl. People in this thread have said that it could be considered pedophilia. It cannot, for a meeting was never asked to be arranged, etc. This woman is a horrible person, and in one way or another, both sides are at fault, but legally, the woman is protected. If you see anything wrong with my logic(which there probably is), please let me know.

"IMO, The woman is totally responsible for creating a fake ID and toying with a young girl`s emotions. But it is no way her fault that Megan commited suicide UNLESS she knew that Megan had depression."

There`s actually a chance that she did know of this condition, considering her daughter was friends with the victim. If she did, and she did this in full knowledge, then she`s conviction-worty. Otherwise, she`s just a woman considered insane by our society.

"being a mother herself she should know better than to do somthing so childish. she is a grwon up for gods sake."

It`s a fetish of sorts. Everyone has a fetish(and i say this not only in sexual terms, i mean in general, a sort of compulsion), maybe hers is "breaking" little girls` hearts. Now that is evil, but hell, she has freedom of speech, and the girl should know far better than to socialize with strangers, regardless of if she was depressed.

You know very well a sane 13 year old girl who breaks up with their boyfriend will, most of the time, go to bed crying, moan, stop eating for a couple of days, and then recover, life going on as normal.

That is a `normal` kid. And Megan `appears` to be normal on the outside too. Was her diagnosis of depression known to the public?

So really, anyone who hooks up with this girl and breaks up with her would totally expect the above to happen.

It did not.

Does this make `Josh` the one to blame? Considering the fact that teenagers hook up and break up on a near-daily basis, no. How can anyone who hooks up with her know she has an underlying problem? heck, even all her friends think she was normal. ANyone of you friends know she has depression?

IMO, The woman is totally responsible for creating a fake ID and toying with a young girl`s emotions. But it is no way her fault that Megan commited suicide UNLESS she knew that Megan had depression.

Maren, your post gives me the ability to stereotype you as someone who feels the need to go emo over every little tragedy in the world and think poorly of those who take this situations in a logical sense.

You are quite annoying, but I suppose you consider yourself a good person because your heart bleeds for every poor, unfortunately soul in the world.

You belittling others for this logical take on this matter and your time wasted attack them makes me pity you.

Also, ten points for stereotyping off a picture that has a possibility of being fake (many users have pondered if the girl in my pictures is really me) and a half-assed answered IAB profile.

iroj, just looking at your profile and your photo gives me the ability to sterotype you as somone who talks just for the sake of talking. you are quite annoying but i suppose you concider yourself rubber so everything bounces off of you. Suicide and death is a very emotional thing even for those who are not directly involved with the party. your lack of emotion and desire to be dominant in conversation is what disgusts me.

now if memory serves, when an adult pretends to a child in order to solicit another child for sexual attention (this woman was posing as an online boyfriend afterall), there is usually a huge red flag there and warrants are sent and computers are confiscated, etc. etc... so in this case, the preying ended up in suicide instead of sexual assault... so i wish it to be explained why this woman shouldn`t be tried for something!

Teenagers get emotionally attached to everything, yes, true. And anything ruining the attachments will have explosive response, correct.

However, very very few of these end up with suicide, as these kids either have support from others, or they realize there`s more to life.

This girl obviously has neither. And the woman can`t be held responsible for it. She shouldn`t have started the relationship in the first place, and she should have given support, but she`s not at fault for the girl not realizing that breaking up with a boyfriend is not the end of the world.

She was doomed from the moment she started falling in love with the `boy`. The woman should be punished for allowing the girl to fall in love with her persona, but not for her suicide.

There was a "couple" in my school of these two kids, both quite nice, and at one point the girl just ended it at one point(not sure how, I`m not in the loop). Kid was extremely sad and talked to no one for I believe like a week? He seemed to go "emo" and seemed suicidal, and he just got over it shortly after. And the kid WAS mentally unstable. He was extremely anorexic and had low self-esteem. He got through it. Logical evidence that girls are far more goddamn emotional! lol (and i mean no ofense Iroj, even though you obviously aren`t emotional unstable)

The thing about this case is... Actually, if I`m sane, from what i understand, you said that the mother should have unplugged the computer. Is that not offense, not defense for the mother? I feel no remorse for the girl because she killed herself over something so stupid. Marth said that if the girl hadn`t killed herself over online bullying, it would have been from real life bullying, to which I agreed.

3) If she is convicted, anyone who says something "mean" on the internet has to go to jail.

4) She didnt kill the girl. This is a free country, she can say whatever she wants to her.

This is completely untrue. Number 3 is untrue because there is precedence set within this case. Just because words were exchanged online doesn`t guarantee jail time. That`s why there is a court system, a judge, and a jury.

A number 4 is ridiculous. I cannot say whatever I want to whomever I want. In many cases that leads to a restraining order. That is obviously impossible for someone anonymous online. And two, you can`t go to someone who is crazy, knowing full well they may harm themselves and tell them to do so. I don`t study law, but I know precedence has been set for this before.

I don`t know all of the details of this case, but I think what was clear is that the woman posed as a boy who showed interest in the girl--probably not something that happened a lot for her, given her emotional state. The girl probably held a lot of hope in the relationship and fell fast for the boy, thinking she could trust him.
Then he turned on her, dashing her hopes and making her feel worthless with the suggestion that the world would be better without her. To a girl like her, that could very well seem like the end of the world at the time. No, it isn`t right to trust someone online, and her parents probably regret allowing her access to the internet...but it is still not her fault. It is the fault of the adult woman who went out of her way to harm an already troubled teenage girl.

honestly, i think what the mother did, if she did anything, was wrong. she should be above toying with a 13 year old girls emotions. however, the fact that the girl killed herself over someone she never actually met was a little messed up. she should know better than to make an online relationship. u hear stories every week about some kid that was kidnapped or raped or something by someone he/she met online and thought was someone else. she really needed to get out there and meet some real ppl, not fake internet ppl. honestly, the world is better without ppl like her.

"I feel no remorse for the stupid girl. She killed herself because someone ONLINE...let me stress again, ONLINE whom she`d never met toyed with her emotions for only a few weeks?"

Then what is your point? You stressed "online" quite a lot.

"I`m thinking if she really was so unstable and willing to kill herself over something so stupid, what makes us think she wouldn`t kill herself over something else?
"What? You think I`m fat? -cries and hangs self-""

Exactly, Marth. Either way, she would have found a way to off herself. Maybe not that day, but it would have happened.

This is a rediculous case.

1) Im sure the kid had some major problems if someone is mean to her and she just kills herself.

2) If shes convicted, then basically anyone who puts they are over 13, or 16, or 18, or whatever on any of these sites would be a criminal and should be arrested.

3) If she is convicted, anyone who says something "mean" on the internet has to go to jail.

4) She didnt kill the girl. This is a free country, she can say whatever she wants to her.

There are alot of bullies in this world, and they are disguesting and should be punished, but she should be tried for something else.

Haha! Good luck getting that law to pass. There is just no way. The girl should have known what she was doing when she signed up on myspace - at least known what being online meant. I can see no motive for the older woman doing what she did, except perhaps some sort of malicious humor, but she can`t be charged for it. It would result in legal chaos.

Usually my opinion on lawyers is: "the world would be a better place without them" (lol), but this time I can see what the guy means.

I could have expected that impulsive reaction from the dead girl`s mom, but if you can`t see that your daughter is not either stupid or just deranged, then you shouldn`t let her online at all.

how many in here actually understand the true severity of mental instability especially at a young age? it doesn`t take much to set you off. you all say its stupid because its online. would it have been stupid if they were notes being left in her mailbox by this woman? online, in writing, in person, the woman is disgusting. she took what she knew about a troubled girl and turned it on her. as far as i`m concerned, this mother is on par with online sexual predators. atleast the victims of sexual predators have a chance to keep living...

We`re not making fun of her...well, I`m not. I`m just saying people whose influences are easily swayed like that are really a burden to society.

Then again, she could have had a great like as a sheep...I mean hipster.

Heresrobo, its because we are both rationally thinking people...and we rule. :D

Yes, it would have, and that`s what needed to happen; I never disagreed with that. But if she even needed help in that way, she clearly didn`t have enough control over herself to warrant sadness for her suicide in connection with the internet. If she wasn`t of stable mind, you can`t lump her in with the rest of humanity.

It won`t. Might`ve kept it from happening to begin with.
It`s not the fact she killed herself...It`s that she killed herself for someone /online/. That adds sadness for the human race instead of just this girl and his family.

who finds out the myspace of a girl who made her daughter mad and then torments her? well, i wouldn`t use "torments" as a word seeing as a normal person wouldn`t have been affected by it. the mom`s messed up but i can`t help but think it`s not her fault. congrats, dead girl, you now have no life in more ways than one.

Oh well, it just goes to show that our children today see the internet as far too real. They take things other type, and others post online far too seriously. These things effect our kids so bad, that the internet is more reality than reality is.

I think that mother should be given an award, it`s proven a point. Children need to spend less time online, and more time out in the real world, making real friends, taking crap to each others faces instead of flaming each other online.

Kudos to her! Stupid kids, go play some baseball, or go shopping at the mall, do something, UNPLUG YOURSELF!

I agree with catlikegrace... she intentionally preyed on a child who she and her daughter knew was not necessarily emotionally stable. She intentionally hurt this little girl`s feelings to make her feel worse about herself. And she effectively drove her to suicide. I hope she gets the maximum sentence.

This woman disgusts me. I think she should have been charged for the girl`s death...it almost would have been more understandable if it had been her daughter, another teenage girl. Still not good, but teenagers can be stupid. The fact that it was a grown woman with a daughter of her own, preying on another child`s emotions, is just messed up.
