Canyou really train a fish? Their memory is about as long as my attention span, wich is 5 seconds.

well, it`ll probably take it 3 months to make it learn that trick.

and all you get for that hard work

    3 months of one trick.

I`m still haunted by the time I walked into my little brother`s room where the fishtank was and all the fish were dead. I was no older than seven. :-(

"Wrong. They are capable of remembering things to at least three months."
    1. will they live to 3 months?
    2. Fish have the worst attention span ever. They forget things they did 2 seconds ago

They don`t have to really remember it. It`s something called behavioral memory, or something like that. It`s the same way dogs do tricks. They know that if they do something, they`ll get something.

I could be wrong on this, but I heard they had a memory of about 3 minutes, and that`s why they don`t get bored going from one side of the tank to the other. But of course, I didn`t care to research it.

I can`t believe nobody has referenced the episode of Mythbusters where they prove that goldfish can be trained. Well, Adam`s just eat their own poop and die, but Jamie`s are able to be trained.

Ok, two goldfish myths that keep getting repeated by people who refuse to look things up themselves:

    1. Goldfish have a 3 or 5 second memory. That sounds cool so let`s all repeat it, right? If you keep fish you would know that they remember a number of things. An easy one to spot is that they know that when you open the top to their tank they`re gonna get fed. There are many other examples.

    2. Goldfish don`t live very long. The only reason that most goldfish die young is that their owners don`t look after them properly. Many fish live for several decades and the record age exceeds 40 years. Koi carp, from the same family as goldfish, can live beyong 200 years.

actually guys, the mythbusters proved that goldfish remember for way longer than 2, 3, or 5 seconds.
they taught them a trick and, about a week later, came back to the fish and they still remembered ow to do it

Research by the School of Psychology at the University of Plymouth in 2003 demonstrated that goldfish have a memory-span of at least three months and can distinguish between different shapes, colors and sounds. They were trained to push a lever to earn a food reward; when the lever was fixed to work only for an hour a day, the fish soon learned to activate it at the correct time. - Wikipedia "gold fish"
