Well, there were ""uncontacted"" until a helicopter flew over a photographer took these photos. Still, very interesting.

You seriously found an uncontacted tribe and you`re not going to show them the world of pain, war, and energy drinks, that`s pretty selfish.

gatorade777: I`m pretty sure I never said I thought all men were sexist. (And I don`t). I may have made a comment earlier implying that the society we live in was sexist as a whole, and guess what? It is, that`s just the way it is.

Also, I wasn`t intentionally throwing around big words to sound smarter, that just happens to be the way I talk. Erm... write. (A year of writing essays in university does that to a person, so excuse me).

I agree with thedudeman. Everyone is talking like they are animals when they are just humans like us. And asspenny has a point. Though it might be good in the short term to tell them about the outside world and give them medicine, that wouldn`t last forever. And it would never be free. And for people saying we should send missionaries down there. No. There are already a ton of lost cultures and religions. We don`t need anymore lost. And I would think that being in the wild and having on paint that makes you bright just screams "Stay away".

boadicea you are the sexiest one for generalizing all men as sexiest. Just because you have a problem with one male doesn`t mean they are all like that. And using a lot of big vocab words doesn`t make you see smarter or better at arguing it only points out that you care way to much about arguing with a stranger.

There are at least 20 other isolated and unacounted for tribes in Brasil - those are the local specialists numbers. My uncle is an antrophologist. He was one of the first "white men" to get in touch with a tribe in Amazon. He lived with them for several years - learned their language, hunted, fished, did their drugs and took part in rituals. Knowing how their society worked eventually helped him to keep them away from people who wanted to take their land.

This shouldn`t be a political debate, or sociological debate. These people have probably been vastly effected just by the helicopter passing over. (Which I think it was stupid to go back and take pictures.) That could have negative effects on their growth, and culture. If we go bursting in there, even just to open a connection, there will be influenced side effects. Sure, they will have access to more advanced capabilities, and like most tribes, they probably won`t take it, but it seems more right to let their society come to its own fruition, and only intervene if they are in danger. Also, Humans, if you didn`t know, ARE animals. We are no different, other than our technological and cognitive capabilities, we function just the same.

Holy crap, we are far from `civilized`. And I`m sure these people are very civil, albeit pristine. (Pristine does not mean beautiful, or perfect. It means in it`s original form, and unchanged.) I`m sure they respect each other, and are very happy living in harmony with nature. That being said, they do not NEED anything offered by modern society. And no, thelonious, they aren`t keeping them isolated as an exhibit, but merely to respect their ways of life, presumably until they become advanced enough to discover our own society. They said they aren`t disclosing their location. They are leaving them be, as they are obviously surviving just fine on their own.

Oh thank GOD the government isn`t going to contact them any further. I was actually pretty worried about that.

Yes, it is a generalization and a stereotype for that woman to say that the one not fighting was a woman and that the weaving was done by women. However, that`s what nearly 100% of all the non-westernized tribes in the world are. Of course there are outliers, but I`d think it`s very safe to say that this tribe also uses that tactic, where the women would gather and the men would hunt.

I mean, if the women are physically unable to hunt (they`re the gender that gives birth) then why would they?

Obviously this isn`t a rule and doesn`t apply to every society, but it seems to work for most.

So all of you get your panties out of your ass and stop getting so offended.

Maybe the men work with the cotton while the women cook or whatever. It doesn`t just have to be unquestionably the women dealing with such tasks while the men run around grunting and killing things.

And immediately jumping to the conclusion that because I have negative things to say I must be on my period is misogynistic and just pure stupidity. Shut the f*ck up you f`ing loser and please never procreate.

Saying that we need to go in there to improve their way of life with technology is like saying we need the FDLS turning our communities into compounds so we can learn the true way to god... there is no reason to force your way of life onto another human being.

Just because it`s cute that they are all wild and what not doesn`t mean they should be ignored and not given the same information as the rest of the world. Humans are not zoo animals, we should be helping g them out of their rut and into the world of technology.

Uh, no your wrong!!! They don`t NEED to be given information of how the modern world lives!!
They are probably MORE civilized just the way they are!! They don`t need MP3`s, or Mariah Carey perfume, or diswashers or TV`s, or cars or canned food, PROZAC or Alcohol etc.... Get my drift???

Everyone who thinks contacting this tribe and offering them the `benefits of medical technology` are not taking into account three facts:

Firstly, these people`s immune systems haven`t had to deal with our diseases yet. So even if you sent a well-intentionned Doctor Without Borders into their tribe to vaccinate them against, say, malaria, it might result in the entire tribe dying from flu or someting as banal contracted from the doctor.

Secondly, it is naive to think that they will benefit from being `brought up to date`. Their lifespans may be short now, but they aren`t shorter that that of other civilized but poor Brazilians. Would you rather have them live 25 years in the forrest or 25 in a Rio slum?

Finally, psychologically, being `brought up to date` will cause an immense trauma. Just these two helicopter trips stressed them out completely. Imagine a bunch of people arriving in their village.

I was merely saying that I would be interested in seeing how they live their lives, as I`m very much aware that it is bound to be completely different to you and I, just as I`m sure they`d be interested in seeing how we live. I`m not saying for a second that I think we should cage them up and analyse their every movement, I`m saying that I personally would be inspired to see the difference in cultures and to know how they go about their daily lives. It`s pure interest as opposed to interest in exhibition.

And as for their welfare, they must have been living the way that they have for many years, so I`m pretty sure that they`re doing okay and aren`t in any need of help.

Believe it or not, our female ancestors did hunt small game animals, fished and often participated in group hunts. The reason we believe they did not play as active a role as men in hunting has to do with the lack of birth control and the fact that they most likely breast fed much later then the norm today. Also, we know that the cro-magnon diets were mostly made of of carbs and plant life, the actual catching of a large animal was very rare, if it ever happen, most likely meat was scavenged. Really, if you add the gathering and small game hunting up with nurturing children and scraping hides, prehistoric women did all the work. ;)

Boadicea: Saying that the women could possibly not make the cotton or whatever is probably just taking away from the females of this tribe a valuable role that they play...speaking in terms of human evolution, the men hunt and the women have more domestic roles, because each is better suited for their respective roles...it is this way in all unaffected tribes like these, so just deal with it, you bitter feminist.

And may I add, just because we communicate with a tribe doesn`t mean they automatically grow suits on their body and hurry off to their 9-5 job. Look at all the other tribes we know of. Just because learn about a people and try to help them as much as we as the modern world can doesn`t mean we bring down the capitalist hammer and smash them into assimilation. There are ways and it has been shown over many cases where the modern world and the tribal world have worked hand-in-hand.

And people need to get off their high-horse about people not being objects to gawk at. It`s a fact of life. Even in the most basic cases like if you`re watching a travel show about the White-American host go to Japan or something. You watch how he interacts with the people there and go "Now that`s something different.." Right THERE that`s the same type or "gawking" as people might have for these people living in the forest. It`s not that we`re making them subconsciously "subhuman", it`s that curiosity is innate in the human psyche and when we see something not like us yet we know is like us in so many ways, we get curious.

and I can`t believe you people aren`t considering the fact they`ve only known themselves and the trees around them for who knows how long.

You can`t expect them to accept an outside person (that proabably looks disfigured or just absolutely bizarre to them) let alone expect them to be able to cope with the encoutner in the first place.

We know for a fact they`re fine and have been living there for quite a while. We don`t know for a fact that will continue after we come into the picture. Why take the chance?

It probably added a new page to their lore when and airplane flew over twice, they`re either terrified of it or worshiping it, and you want to full on walk in and try and change the way their life has been solidified.

I agree with Churc. When people look at these isolated tribes they equate them with endangered species of animals and talk about the destruction of their habitat, etc. They aren`t animals, they`re humans, and sooner or later, just like so many natives before them, they will be forced to come to grips with the world they live in. It is naive to think they could possibly go on living in complete isolation forever. Living in conditions like that is barbaric. It`s true that technology and civilization come with unfortunate downsides, but they`re ultimately unavoidable. History will march on, and there`s no going back. If you honestly believe a savage life to be better than a civilized one, I don`t understand what you`re doing on this website instead of out in the forest hunting boars. These people need to be rescued. The idea that all cultures are somehow equally valid is blind and naive, and based on on a single thread of logic.

True Asspenny, but most of the "free" world give out aid for free. So I`m thinking we could do the same for them. Either way technology truly is a gift and should be shared by all. I don`t go throwing insults all willy nilly. I only call people morons when it`s completely obvious by the size of the foot that the shoe fits.

For one thing, living in the middle of the f*cking jungle may not require any modern technology in the first place...
These people have no concept of anything beyond essential tools. Hammer, knife, arrow, spear. I doubt it goes far beyond that and I very much doubt it needs to.

And what horrid disease is it exactly that they`re in such danger from? Since they`ve spent hundreds of years in the same place it`s pretty easy to assume they`re pretty well built for anything the area, and if something new did pop up to get them it would only be in the sense of nature. As a matter of fact, there`s probably a better chance whoever comes to bring medicine in the first place has some virus or germ on them the people have never encountered.

Why are we just letting these people live short, primitive lives? We should be doing something so that they have at least the benefits of medical technology and perhaps a few other things to make their lives easier and longer. There is a reason the rest of the world doesn`t act or live like they do, and it is stupid and cruel to think that they are better off without it.

True some of our `culture` may benefit them but then they have to change their whole way of being, it`s pretty unlikely that they have money and would only be able to barter. Do you think that this medical technology would continuously be provided `free of charge`. Its just, if they have lived this long already, they already know how to cope with their own hardships and don`t necessarily need our, your, pity. Why degrade the expanse of man?

-These people need to be brought into the fold or at least updated about the world around them. Just because it`s cute that they are all wild and what not doesn`t mean they should be ignored and not given the same information as the rest of the world. Humans are not zoo animals, we should be helping g them out of their rut and into the world of technology.-

If you think that`s a valid point, you`re a moron.

They should be left alone because they`ve existed this long without knowledge of an outside beyond the forestand they`ve done fine.

There`s no need to rock their world to the core for our own curiosity.

There is literally no way someone could get in there and learn more about these people without changing them forever.

""I can`t wait to find out more about what happens with them, how they live and stuff."

Really?

I hope that no one makes any attempt to contact them, all these sort of tribes are being `westernised`, i think it`s a real shame."

=================================================

And if they do to try and attempt contact, then I hope they fall into a trap and then get eaten alive just like in all the Italian cannibal movies I have! Rain forest cannibals FTW!!!

I`m with you, Boadicea... the one painted black didn`t look feminine to me, and there`s no reason `women`s tasks` would have to be done by women... if that made any sense... whatever, you know what I mean.

I`m all for making sure these people aren`t endangered, but we don`t need to scare the crap out of them by repeatedly flying over their villages taking photos, and we definitely don`t need to analyse their way of life... unless that sort of thing floats your boat, in which case you probably don`t get out enough. Meh... leave them alone.

"...everything about these people is, and hopefully will remain, a mystery"? I don`t see why they should "hopefully" remain a mystery. It would be awesome to learn about them.

Hey thanks for that other link Bananahammoc.

What the hell though? They assume the black figure is a woman solely because it`s NOT holding a bow. If anything the red one on the left looks more feminine. Get a life people, maybe THAT society isn`t a bunch of sexist bastards.

They also say the cotton would be woven by the women. Not "probably", but simply "would" be. Um, this is clearly a completely different way of life than we`re used to seeing. But whatever, let`s just assume the women are there to be weak wards of the men who spin cotton all day. That`s all they`re good for anyway, it must be what`s going on.

Sigh. Sorry, I`m a bitter person.

Saw this on yahoo earlier this morning. Still pretty cool. And I agree about the missionaries. The tribe`s done fine on its own.

I can`t believe there are people who still live like that in 2008. It is utterly shocking.

Holy crap. Orange people!!

They either only eat carrots and tomatoes, used WAY too much fake tan or paint themselves.
