I believe there`s something out there. Not sure what, though. Haven`t been able to study as many religions as I want to confirm what exactly I believe.

I strong believe the "something" out there right now is the holiness of the Human spirit and Human consciousness.

I haven`t studied philosophy enouvgh either to know what that`s called.

    I chose Agnostic.

    Live and learn. =)

"Doc, no one is attacking here. It`s just a poll."

I know, Puddies. I was just hoping to keep it that way. The description implied "Taking the gloves off" which usually denotes argument or debate.

For the record, I am Christian, but I don`t believe that Christ is God. I don`t believe in the "Holy Trinity." I do believe that he is the son of God and is our savior. That`s a different view than mainstream Christianity, though. And Catholics are Christians, so they shouldn`t have their own entry in the poll.

Blinded by religion much? You can have your imaginary friends if you want, it doesn`t bother me, but attacking me for not having an imaginary friend is something I don`t take well to.

I definitely don`t parade around telling everyone how "cool" I am because I`m an athiest. I also don`t post huge ying-yangs in forums to proclaim how great my religion, or lack thereof, is.

One more: I don`t insult your beliefs to better my own.

You have no counter argument besides attacking my grammar? Seriously man, learn what your religion teaches and practice it.
I see so many people proclaiming that they are this and that religion, and then they go off breaking the rules of their gods.

I`m Christian, but specifically Roman Catholic. It kinda irks me when people think they are 2 totally different religions. It`s true that their are very big differences between the different branches of christianity, but they both work from the same book lol. And FYI, there are a lot of things in my religion which I don`t agree with, and I`m not actually a practicing Catholic, but I very much believe in God...I dunno what category I`d fall under. "Sort of Roman Catholic Christian who doesn`t actually go to church." Can we make that an option next time? :P

m00shy: There are actually many Christians (mostly very conservative evangelicals) who argue that Catholicism isn`t actually Christianity at all, but a cult. (Look up John Hagee, any white supremacist group, etc) Also there are differences between the Catholic and Protestant Bibles, so it`s not technically the "same" book.

Accurs3ds0ul I see your point. But I am a roman catholic :) although I dont agree with everything, it`s still the religion I chose.

cambriaseyes, I would definately disagree with Catholocism being a cult, it`s a well established religion (I know this may not be your personal view), but I do agree when you say there are big differences between catholicism and other branches of christianity. Personally, I would class RC as christian because aside from the differences, there are also numerous similarities.

Bleh, is it really that hard to learn to type decent English? I mean seriously, rather than everyone be typing with grammar and punctuation, we lower the standards and accept these people. Then these people are convinced that poor grammar is acceptable in the real world, and in the end, we`re all stupider from this group of people.

Then again, I could just be extreme.

agnostics are just people that are scared of saying their athiests incase there actualy is a god and then they end up in hell.

and if your agnostic, i dont care if your offended because you know its the truth

    Ahaha. False.

Being Agnostic also includes being humble enough to concede you don`t know.

    Get over yourself, please.

"But did you really choose it, m00shy, or was it just what you grew up with>"

At first I was just born into it, and I was baptised as a catholic. Then at the age of seven I was happy to sit my communion. Early teens I sat my confirmation to confirm that I wanted to be of the catholic faith. So I most definately chose it.By the time I sat my confirmation I was at an age where I was informed enough and mature enough to decide. I still stand by my choice today although I`m not practicing, I`m happy in my beliefs. Although, as i said earlier I don`t agree with everything, and i accept/am open to considering many parts of other religions.

Also, my parents had no say in my choices. They allowed me to ask questions as learn about other religions if I wanted to. My dad was actually protestant and became catholic when he married my mum. My mum has always been catholic.

I`m Agnostic all the way for the simple fact I don`t know what is out there, and I personally don`t feel like wasting my time to look for what`s out there. And if I end up in hell or whatever bad place there may be, I know it will be my fault because I chose to live my life the way I want to, by my own standards. And one thing I don`t understand about Catholicism is God wants you to live a good life and teaches those who follow to be tolerate of others and most Catholics I meet are generally the most intolerant of many people when it comes to religious topics. (I was baptized in a Unity church, one of the non-denominational sects and therefore no, I do not technically follow any religion)

Personally I don`t think anyone should be singled out by their religion (same way I feel about race). Eg "most catholics". Thats why I questioned you gothic. I just feel a lot of people in the world are intolerant, regardless of religion. Thats why I felt "most catholics" was a bit harsh.

I just find it ironic that your religion teaches it specifically and many that I meet can`t stand me because I am an agnostic. I never meant that all, or that there aren`t tolerant ones I just find it ironic, thats all. I agree that people shouldn`t be singled out because of race or religion and yet you have to fill it out on an application don`t you? And again I`m not saying most catholics out there, just going by the most catholics that I MET, which is very far and few to the entirety of Catholics out there.

God doesn`t believe in atheists! So a lot of users here don`t even exist. Just joking of course.
If it wasn`t clear by now, I`m a christian. And I`ve got something living inside me that makes me happy every day that I live. There are a lot of things in life that can make you happy. But there is a happiness that only God can give you. And this happiness doens`t depend on the people around you or the stuff that you buy or the things that you do. It`s just a feeling inside, to know that Jesus loves you and that he saved you. And I know most of you will think this is complete nonsense. But know that it is never too late to give your life to God and to receive that happiness. Maybe you don`t believe a word of what I`m telling you. But know that God will always be there for you. So even if you`ve grown old and suddenly you realise that you want God to enter your life, know that it`s never too late no matter what you have done in your life, He will always love you, He gave his Son for you!

    Agnostic here.

But fyi you`re NOT agnostic if you...
"know there`s some divine being, but not sure what"
"have beliefs that span many religions"
    or
"are too afraid to admit you`re atheist"

Agnostics are people that believe that humans cannot know all of the "answers", due to a faulty perception system.
Therefore, we neither believe or disbelieve in God.
So if you say "I know there`s something out there.." you`re not agnostic.

But enough of my ranting, lol.

My dad is a Catholic, and I don`t quite remember how this came up but he mentioned that in the Bible or the 10 Commandments (I really don`t know for I`ve never studied it) it says to "Do unto others as you would do unto yourself". It`s the golden rule, treat others how you like to be treated, and that means to be accepted by man you need to accept others without religion being a matter of importance. We are all human nonetheless, and what you choose to follow is your own thing, don`t push it on others and treat others of different religions the same as you would treat one of your own religion. I agree that the whole sex/race/religion thing shouldn`t be relevant but that fact remains its still there. Tolerance needs to be across the board no matter the religion. As I like to say, "We all have blue blood and bleed red".

aaah i get what you were saying now! Yeh I try to treat others as I would like to be treated (not saying I`m perfect by any stretch of the imagination:P).

There are a lot of hypocritical people out there of ALL religions. Their religions teach them peace, friendship, be good to one another and they do the opposite. Some people belive that going to a place of worship every week makes you a good person, but I know for a fact that there are plenty of people who don`t practice religion that are far better people because they are simply decent to others, not because they go to pray every week.

I disagree with preaching a load of waffle and then not living by it.

And I agree with what you are saying. No one should be hypocritical.

Yes! Thats exactly what I was trying to get at, its kinda hard when researching things for my mom and typing this at the same time so sorry for not making it clearer. Again I have no qualms with anyone for the religion they choose, its just if you go and claim something, please try and follow it yourselves. I have no idea what is out there and choose to live by my own standards. I just don`t like when people teach one thing, do the opposite or try and it push their beliefs onto those who don`t want them. And now talking to you shows that again, not all catholics are intolerant , I just wish more would be like you. You seem really cool and are right, no one should be hypocritical. And I`m sorry for offending anyone with my statement of "most catholics I`ve met"

    Born Muslim, consider myself agnostic.

Am I afraid? No. It’s just that the world is too damn screwed up right know.

I believe in Abraham’s god. Mohammad’s god, Ishmael’s god, Isaac’s god, but I do not take all those words for fact.

There are differences that can cancel out each other, and facts as well that prove events or verses in ways…but these books were still written by mortal men with dreams and notions…

Hey, since we’re all talking in peace where the world is blue and green with a single heart…what do you say we ah…compare books? So to speak?

Why is AGNOSTIC listed? It is not a middle position! All agnostics are atheist or theist (or a form of theism: deist, pantheist, etc.). And actually, most people who put `agnostic` are really atheists. They`re agnostic-atheists! Lack of knowledge, and lack of belief.

NicoleIsALie: "Agnostics... we neither believe or disbelieve in God."

Incorrect. You have to either believe or disbelieve. Do you believe Santa Claus is real, or not real? You can`t say "I don`t know". It`s either yes or no.

Hmmm. So it`s divided between the Christians and the Atheists. No wonder everyone is always fighting! It all makes sense now.

Bekll: Uh, hate to say it but everything is not all black and white, like most Americans think. For example: was Jesus a real person? Uh, there`s no proof to the contrary, but there`s not sufficient proof to say he was real either.

So the best answer one can really give is "I don`t know."

Why do people have such a hard time dealing with uncertainty? It`s a part of life!

So the best answer one can really give is "I don`t know."--

Agnosticism and gnosticism have to do with knowledge. Saying "I don`t know" is agnostic. But then the question is `agnostic what?`.

Saying "I don`t believe/I lack belief" is atheism. So if one doesn`t believe in Jesus then (s)he is atheist towards Jesus. But also say (s)he isn`t certain of Jesus not existing - that makes the person agnostic-atheist.

QueenZira, how is this a false dilemma fallacy? Or do you just not know the definitions of the words?

All people are atheist or theist - (or a form OF theism, but that`s just nit-picking).

We`re born atheist. We`re also born agnostic. Everything else we`re taught or indoctrinated to be.

I have taken several philosophy classes - that is irrelevant. What people are mistaken about is that `agnostic` is a third position, when it is not.

You`ve just restated your fallacious premise and logic be d a m n e d. Agnosticism is the state of not knowing for certain of the existence of a higher power and keeping an open mind to the possibility of one. You`d know that if you had any philosophical experience.

I don`t see why Islamic is up there. That`s not anything. A Muslim is a follower of Islam, "Islamic" is a made-up adjective that`s come into use. It definitely can`t apply to people.

There *are* people out there who claim to be gnostic - they`re called fundamentalists and are typically theists, though atheists have been known to be gnostic also. Being gnostic means to not consider the other option even *if* there is evidence.

This is why you`ll find most atheists to be agnostic. They`re willing to believe/accept god(s) as real were there a sufficient amount of evidence.

I`m not arguing over what `agnostic` means. It`s people considering it a position outside of atheism and theism that I find ignorant.

And in fact, "atheist" doesn`t necessarily mean godless. As puddies quoted earlier from Stephen Roberts: "I contend that we are both atheists - I believe in one less God than you do. Once you understand why you dismiss all other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours". So everyone is atheist to at least one god.

Oh geez... now this is turning into an etymological debate. Let`s try to divert that... it`s too boring.

Now, I am neither theist nor atheist. Based on a lot of scientific and spiritual introspection, I have come to believe that "god" is not an entity outside of ourselves, but rather the fundamental energy of which all things in the Universe is composed (based on the findings of Quantum Physics.) Thus, I am neither theist nor atheist. Again, as Zira said, this is the false dilemma fallacy.

I, personally, believe that the modern, societal conception of God is a means by which religions can control and further divide people. This fact has become increasingly evident in today`s tragically "Bush-ist" society.

What better way to gain power over people? Divide and conquer. Make the people fight amongst themselves and they won`t be paying attention to the real enemy. OLDEST TRICK IN THE BOOK.

Gnosticism is an ancient defunct branch of christianity that was quashed b/c it was considered heretical. If you use "gnostic" as a desription of belief this is what I think you mean. Otherwise, "gnostic" could mean "inner knowing."

chrisfalcon, if you believe there is some sort of power out there that created everything, then you are perhaps a deist - which is a watered down version of theism. There`s atheism and then there`s theism and the different components of it.

Gnosticism can be referred to as an ancient branch of Christianity, yes. I am referring to its meaning when `agnostic` is also used. Gnosticism: Knowledge. A-gnosticism: Without knowledge.

It pertains to knowledge, not belief.

I believe that there is some entity out there that did something to start everything. Please don`t bash other peoples views, just be nice to each other. QueenZira, okay... well, you were discussing something separate from me. So let bygones be bygones I suppose. Eh.

powpowking, atheists have accepted that heaven and hell don`t exist. And anyway, being conscious forever - even in paradise - would be a torturous bore. And imagine the horror of suicidal people if an after-life existed. They`d `wake up` and think "Aww... man. My brain is still alive? How long does this go on for?" and then god would say "For all eternity. You *can`t* die" and they`d respond "god, you`re one twisted f***, you know that?". And then all the rest of us will *become* suicidal after a while.

May you find happiness and peace in whatever spiritual path you choose to follow.

I wish people wouldn`t think their religious choice was right to the exlusion of others, or that it made them better or smarter or more special than anyone else.

Atheism: Absence of belief in a god or gods.

And we`re born atheist to all (made up) gods. It`s the default state. It`s not a religion.

And viczko, YOU`RE an atheist to all gods, but one - the Christian god. Atheists who don`t believe in any, just go one god further than you.

I think this needs to be clarified completely
Catholicism is just a subset of Christianity. All Catholics are Christian but not all Christians are Catholic. It would have been better to change Christian to Protestant since that covers just about everything except non-denominational, but in the end, they are still Protestant. Also Islamics and Muslims are one in the same and they are called Muslims not Islamics. Also Agnostism and Atheism could be combined. It`s better now to called Agnostics Theists. To have no convictions means what? No religion? Useless item. Don`t forget Hinduism which is still in existance.

Just because people can have a set of beliefs doesn`t mean it is called religion. Religion is more complex than that.

    God of the impossible huh
It`d be impossible for him to be the God of impossible stupid
You really need to look at the facts,
Look at holes in your religion, look at the cracks
Infinite Regression prevents a God from even existing
Let alone an intelligent one this is just the beginning"

Guys, if you look at the poll you will note that there are (at the time of this posting) 1458 Theists on this site.

This is in comparison to the 574 Agnostics (Those who either don`t know for sure or don`t care, by definition) and the 883 Atheist IAB users.

Folks, by the numbers, Theism wins.

"Folks, by the numbers, Theism wins." - give them time, they`ll kill each other off. then we`ll see who wins.
