Looks like some people have moved on from Coke amd Mentos.

@firefliet:
You`re an idiot. Exothermic and endothermic are exothermic and endothermic ONLY.
Product favored means that different brands of gummy bears (thus, a different make-up) will change the reaction. Obviously, a gummy bear with more carbon and less oxygen is going to produce more gas, and one with more H2O and less C02 is going to produce more water.

And, for the record, I know that post was over 2 years old. Never too late to get schooled, however.

"Product favored" means that the rxn is exothermic. It`s easier to get rid of energy than take it in (same way it`s easier to give away crap than get free crap, lol), so the forward rxn is easier than the reverse, which would require mounds of energy to be put into it.

This isn`t new to me at all. We have done this in my chem class at least 10 times this year alone. As cool as this video is, it`s much better when done live.

Cool! I just did this a couple of months ago in AS Chemistry, and fell in love with it!! It`s called the screaming jelly baby, because of the sounds it makes :p
I sooooo wanna do it again 8D

`Product favoured` means that the reaction favours the products, ie. it`s easier to turn KClO3 and gummy bears into KCl, CO2 and water than it is to turn KCl, CO2 and water into KClO3 and gummy bears. Pretty much.

It`s because Potassium Chlorate is an oxidizer. It provides fuels (gummy bear is sugar, sugar is a good fuel) with oxygen in order to burn. The potassium chlorate is hot in this experiment, so it begins the fuel/oxygen reaction instantly.

sertrbl, there are no missing chlorines.
8(KClO3)+C12H22O11->8(KCl)+11(H2O)+12(CO2)

Skillz, if you haven`t quit with the `fake` by tomorrow, I swear I`ll dip your face in molten potassium chlorate :|

Who tasted this reaction?
I`m sure I heard `flavored` at the end of the vid...

x.

wait, potassium chlorate and sucrose makes potassium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide
but what about the other chlorines?
oh well. doesnt matter.

"Why cant we use that kind of chenical reaction to fuel cars"
how would you keep the KClO3 molten?
thus, we reach a problem. it would require energy to a)make the gummy worms and b)keep the potassium chlorate hot enough. its not worth the trouble.
besides, as others have said, its expensive anyway.

potassium chlorate isn`t that easy to obtain, and can be pretty dangerous (and you could toss in alot of things into it to get similar reactions, not just gummy bears)
we`re better off sticking with diet coke and mentos

Running cars off of something like that is REALLY impractical, think of the gallons of waster KCl, and the whole gummy bear being dropped into potassium chlorate at the right rate to get required energy. Water powered cars are probably the way to go, that or finding a better way to store H and release it easily.

It’s for opportunities like these I always keep molten Potassium Chlorate on hand.

But damn... I don`t have any gummy bears. Where in the hell would I ever find those?
